My shop manager will stack 16-20 cars per day for me and 1 other tech, screaming from across the shop ALL DAY that cars are taking too long and wants them done quicker. We do that, and then at the end of the weed dude proceeds to say “you guys need to do a better job of looking at these cars, take your time and really check every car out to the fullest extent. My solution to this is problem is a 3 day notice! 😙

Sounds like my boss lately, we’ve been banging stuff out at my garage and my boss comes in every morning and the first thing he says is “I think I’m gonna be moody today because nothing is getting done”

"Is my shop that good?" Let's check....Privately owned company worth multi billions, on average over 100 cars daily to be processed, numerous commercial and dealer accounts accounts sending cars by the hundreds to our location, techs loaded with work on a daily basis, over 3 weeks of PTO yearly, time and a half over 40, and incredibly good health benefits. Yeah, we're fine. Y'all can have your little mom and pop shop routine.

I used to be off Monday and Tuesday at my previous shop. On Wednesday morning when I came in my first words were always, "What's F'd up?". They would always have a pile of 6-10 cars that were misdiagnosed on Monday and Tuesday for me to look at. They would absolutely never push diag work to Wednesday when I get there because they had to get the car in.

With my shop being here 40 years, I think there are many things that could be better..., though, about 80% of our clients are repeat for many years, but, I do wish we were much better set in the newer technology needed. not gonna lie, but we do well, (OH, Btw, I am a stickler, for any comebacks go right in front of the line, full priority)

Yeah i was drinking the kool aid i thought my last shop was great. I had people asking me about the integrity of the business and also found one of my friends had bought a car off the owner. My friend put it great "if youre not putting money in his pocket you aint shit to him" Best thing i did there was get fired haha.

Hello Sir. I'm a welder who is seemingly getting "quietly fired" I have no had any welding work for about a month (until last week where it was urgent) and have been doing things like taring the parking lot, cleaning the entire shop, buffing the floors, cleaning the bathrooms, being sent to the production plant to run the bailer. I have recently begun my journey into the world of AG equipment (going to school for it) and was told to apply at the local John Deere dealer. What are some questions I should ask? I did take a tour and the shop section seems alright. Its dirty but, I expect a shop to be somewhat dirty. He mentioned hourly and flat rate etc. Its a new world to me one I'm quite excited to be part of but, I don't want to be looking past some major issues just because I want to make sure I have a job and a future. One thing I'm concerned about is pay. I get $22 a hour right now. Student techs get $18-20. Would it be wrong to ask for $20-$22 because I am paying for schooling out of pocket and that directly benefits them as a company? Can you go from hourly to flat rate? or are you locked in with what ever you pick? My last question is, as a student who will not be able to work a 40 hour week due to the hours of class and the dealers hours. What is the best route for maximizing my hours worked? Tools are pretty much already taken care of because I like fixing my truck and helping my buddies out with projects so, I'm not worried about that as much and I have no shame in showing up with my pawn shop tools. Any advice from anyone who reads this would be gratefully received. Thank you and God bless you all!

Honestly the JD shop should be sending you to classes to work on their equipment. Depending on your school hours conflict it’s going to be tough to actually get anything done. Not like automotive with later hours , waiters , oil changes, brake jobs. Not unheard of 40 hour ticket on one tractor. I sublet some bigger work as I’m a lone tech with more work then I can do in a week. But if I went to a AG dealer I would be hard pressed not to look at a hourly plus commission deal on the ticket. Lots of money to fix AG/turf when you get into $200k+ machines. If they are willing to work with your schedule get as much experience as you can.

@@jaydotseedot They actually offered to pay for school if I'm willing to sign a 3 year work contract. I personally do not like those contracts looming over my head. I am concerned that any shop would see that I am locked in and just take advantage of me. The shop is the "small engines" shop so the biggest thing they get in is a 5000 series tractor. Meaning its a bunch of lawn mower conversions like dropping decks off and then installing the blowers/plows. The end goal is to get to the big boy tractors but, being I'm going through collage (and tools add up) I see starting small and moving up as a wise move. I am unsure if its the best move but, its a move at least.
