I don’t get why KZbin thinks setting the same restrictions for vloggers and animators is reasonable A vlogger can record a fifteen minute video and have a fifteen minute video It’d take an animator literally months to get that much watch time produced

Sadly, yeah. KZbin just cares about that watch time more than anything. They've shown us MANY times over that they prioritize that kind of stuff more than quality or effort. We've seen the previous algorithm changes. Kinda depressing :/

Still 4k watch time in a year is jack shit. If you are a nobody then like today you aren't going to get paid shit. The thing you guys leave out is animators already don't make money before the changes. Why would an advertiser put an ad on a 15 second video. They don't. People need to branch out and stop blaming youtube for not supporting their content type. KZbin and animation doesn't work. There for you need to find other ways to make money. It does not mean you can just bitch at youtube because advertisers don't want to put ad's on 10 second content.

I'm a small creator. We just broke 4k subs. On our channel we play pokemon tabletop (basically d&d with pokemon) and edit them into 10 minute videos. We actually have been lucky enough to make $10 per day, and almost $600 per month on patreon because of our dedicated viewers. We worked very hard and we believe that so far youtubes policies have been fair but we BARELY dodged the monetization purge I feel. We still can't contest videos that get the yellow dollar of death. There are lots of other negatives that happen to small creators because of this but I cannot express them in just this small space. More than just mental things, actuall privleges we don't have. I feel like we might be one more controversy away from getting completely destroyed off of the platform...best of luck other small guys. :(

The thing is most of the smaller channels including me do KZbin as a hobby. I do it because I find it fun while I still put ads on my Videos I make next to nothing anyways. So pushing those requirements won't affect most of the smaller channels anyways in terms what kind of money they make. I would like the idea if KZbin would do something to promote smaller channels because as of right now there's no way for us smaller channels to get into recommendations since we're not hitting the number of views it takes for KZbin to put us there.
@ConspicuousNinja
@ConspicuousNinja 7 жыл бұрын
These new rules don’t really affect my channel as I meet the requirements still, but my opinion is that the ridiculous 4000+ hours/year requirement should be changed. It’s pretty hard for most small channels to get that without lots and lots of work over a long period of time. I do think the 10k view requirement is reasonable, and even if it was upped to 15-20k views it seems pretty logical. I can see why KZbin would implement a time-based requirement (4000hrs/yr), but 4000 hours seems a bit much. I think that everything would be better if the requirements were altered to 15k total views, 100 subscribers and ~100-500hrs/yr. That seems like an achievable goal for KZbinrs just starting out. Thanks for making a video on this, Jordan.

What you're saying makes a lot of sense. I used to make videos several years ago. At first it was fun, but later on when I was getting nowhere with the channel, I tried investing more time and effort into each video and still would get nowhere. I know I wasted hundreds of hours on making videos to only make a few dollars off of them. When I finally made the decision to stop and invest my time elsewhere, I felt so relieved. What started out fun turned into stress and I'm glad I stopped trying to get somewhere with youtube.
@nerfchris
@nerfchris 7 жыл бұрын
don't think they're trying to hurt small channels, but they've inadvertently affected certain people a lot. I applied for monetisation about a month ago, and got no response. Finally, I find out this morning it's because they've been planning to change the requirements. I still meet them, but I'm sure others now don't. I think this change has been blown out of proportion because it's just easy views for bigger channels who don't actually care about the change (not saying you). BUT, I do think this change is going to really hurt people who make shorter videos, such as animators and people who make skits, etc. MUCH HARDER to get the watch time needed than before. Overall, you shouldn't do KZbin for money as a small channel, you should do it as a passion and to aspire to be big one day. Monetisation isn't going to affect your success.

Thank you Captain, for speaking up for Small KZbinrs Like us. I'm a small KZbinr and I've been doing youtube for some time now, and I work really hard on all of my videos, but nobody watches them. I started my KZbin channel over 6 years ago... I started creating random Minecraft videos for fun because I LOVED doing it! I had no clue about the partner programme. I realised that there was a partner program that would allow me to upload videos over 15 mins, use custom thumbnails, custom URL and schedule videos. I applied to this about 4 years ago... It took multiple attempts over quite a period of time but I eventually got accepted and I was so EXCITED that I could do all of those things! A year or so later, I realised that monetisation was a thing so I thought "Why Not?!". Fast forward to now, I am at £59, 220 subs and 1200 hours of watch time this year. The threshold to withdraw money from ad revenue is £60 - I earned half of that money over the past year in which my channel started to pick up but I am never going to see this money unless I reach partner status again. I always have and always will make KZbin videos and Twitch streams because I LOVE the community that has been created and I have such a creative mind! To me, the money was just symbolic that KZbin supported us small creators who have a passion. Although I strongly believe that there are many AMAZING small creators out there who want to make amazing, creative short films or skits in the future and that £60 could be the difference between the last piece of equipment to shoot that short film - that short film could've been the next huge film that everyone loves. I will state right now that I have spent wayyyyyy more money on my KZbin then I thought I would ever earn. The money won't ever become an earning - it would be an aid for the money for equipment etc. My opinion is that KZbin is cutting off us small creators and has been for the past year. It is cruel and they are making incorrect decisions. I completely understand people's opinions but I believe monetisation is important for small channels.

Although infrequent, I like when Jordan posts these types of informative videos. Rather than looking at the bold title on the page and having a dramatic meltdown, he looks more toward the fine print, and takes the time to comprehend it. He then passes his understanding on to us--his viewers--in a straightforward manner that makes it easy to follow what's *actually* going on. The anecdote may have taken a while to get through this time, but overall what he had to say on the matter really did paint a clear picture of what YT has in mind. It makes perfect sense, tbh.

I think the reason many are so upset over this change is because they are going to lose "money". Those losing the money are either stealing content from other creators and reuploading it, or they are making only a few dollars a month. There is nothing wrong with wanting to make some money off of what you upload, but that shouldn't be your reason for uploading. Make this your 2018 goal. Keep uploading, and keep growing and once you start making money again, it will feel even better than before.

I think that the main complaint about this whole situation is the removal of the status and/or recognition of providing content. When you make money doing something, you are officially a professional. So a professional gamer, vlogger, foodie, DIYer, what have you. Taking that monetization away in a sense is implying that those who were professionals are no longer worthy of that right. Like losing a job, getting kicked out of a school club, or in general losing that recognition for your work, skills or effort. $30 a month from my channel is inconsequential in my financial situation. However, it felts good knowing that your time was worth something to the viewers and platform. Others might rely on that money to be able to afford the internet speeds, games, or materials to continue their channel, of course every situation is different. But essentially as Jordan said, it's not an amount of money that cannot be replaced by other means. For those of you saying "There goes my dream" or "my channel is dead"... It's not. It's just not being monetized. Your content still matters to the people that watch. Strive to make your content better and worthy of being monetized and you'll get there. And when you do, hopefully along with your hard work will come a more refined and beneficial monetization system that is not being exploited by garbage channels sapping away revenue from hard working creators. Time will tell what impact this has on channel promotion. My biggest concern with this is that since small channels are no longer being monetized that they aren't making money for KZbin anymore and are thus not worthy of showing up on recommended content or searches. Time will tell on that one. But all that means is that you need to make sure you produce the highest quality to hit that monetization threshold. You can do it, but it will take some serious commitment and effort. If you can't provide that commitment and effort, then that is your answer for why they are demonetizing these channels.

the only issue i see with hurting ppl who only make 10 bucks a month is that they might be on a limited income, or too young to work, and that 120 buck a year could buy them a new headset mic keyboard ram etc... not alot of money yes, but not a useless amount either.

Thank you for being a voice for my channel, CRAZYSCOTTISHGUY. I am no longer going to get revenue, because I don’t meet requirements anymore. I worked hard for 10k views, and recently got an email saying I won’t get revenue until I meet the new requirements. I wish it would let the people who are already monetized keep their monetization. Thank you for the message, Jordan!

I think you hit the nail on the head. I've been doing KZbin for almost 4 years. My issue is I've been a KZbin partner for 4 years and now not anymore. I didn't find any success until the past 2 months because of WWII also how I'm doing my videos now. It's sad yes, but motivates to work harder to hit the new requirements KZbin has given us. I wish all small channels the best of luck! CODToothless

This topic is so relevant to me right now. I’ve tried building my channel up over the years, mainly trying to find my voice, and now that I’ve finally hit my stride with the types of content I want to be making, I now have just one month to gain 800+ subs and 4K minutes watched. It took me almost a year to get here and now I might lose my monetization. Sure, I didnt make that much from my channel but one month to hit that new standard is so incredibly hard to do for someone just starting out. My goal this year was to hit 1000 subs ... by the end of 2018. That timeline just shrunk dramatically. Sigh. I’m trying my best to take this as a positive challenge but I feel YT didn’t give us enough time and found it really unfair to prepare for. I understand that my channel wasn’t as popular and might have been a waste of space considering how much $ it would take to keep me monetized but grandfather me in or something. It’s so discouraging as a content creator. Anyway thanks for posting this, glad some of the bigger YTers are talking about this. Thumbs up always Captain. /endrant

Having had smaller channels, I definitely understand how it must suck if they have not reached the 1000 subscriber criteria. I would like to put myself in a little bit of a story with this thing. You see channels with 10k subscribers, even 100k, with a very few viewer amount. Then you see smaller channels, with much lower subscriber counts get a lot of views. The older channels might have 90% or more of their viewer-base inactive. While the channels with not necessarily biggest amount of subscribers have most of their subscriber base active because the channel is either new, or they put a lot of effort in a short amount of time. The way KZbin does this does fall both positively and negatively, for each channel and each situation they may be in. It is negative for channels working hard and are getting a lot of views trying to build their viewership and subscriber base, but they have not hit 1k subscribers yet. Then on the other hand it's good to limit as you mentioned "one hit wonder" channels. I have personally always had more views than an ordinary channel that I know of from my subscriber base, I don't base my statistics whether I am doing poorly or nicely on the subscriber amount, but by the viewer amount/watch time. While others are basing it on their amount of subscribers and not the views. We all are different. But I do believe there is A LOT of smaller channels with way more than 4000 hours per month in watch time with less than 1 thousand subscribers. I wish KZbin had a super ahead of time AI to decide a bit more in detail who is allowed to monetize and who;se not, sadly that is not a possibility thinking about all of the users the website has. Just a little rant over my opinion on the whole matter

i think a big hit here that not many people are talking about are live streamers: live streamers who are partnered can get sponsors and super cash donations rather than run ads for monetization. so the 10000 views number would not be good for ad views, but dedicated audiences could still support their favorite channel through official youtube means. now its even harder for streamers like myself to get that official support through means other than outside channels like patreon which are less likely to be used.

The story through me off at first and I thought I was going to get upset with you and disagree, but fortunately I watched all the way through and agree with the vast majority of what you are saying. You have a well balanced perspective for having such a large comment. As a smaller channel who was making a modest amount, in terms of revenue, it just means that I need to stay focused and continue doing the content that I love and am passionate about. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us all on this.

The way I see it, KZbin is trying to weed out (like you said) those people that are either not making original content, or are trying to profit off of other people's work. I'm pretty sure they took into account all those smaller channels that don't meet the requirements, but had to do something about the lack of ad-space. I would personally never try to make a living or hope for the extra money from KZbin for making content. If I were to start making content and putting it on KZbin, it would most definitely have to be content of something that I enjoy doing as a hobby or at least something of the sort.

I personally think they’re changing things to allow smaller channels to grow more and they now have the ability to do KZbin as a passion. With this system it’ll hurt the channels that copy the bigger channels and who try to make money from it. So if they don’t have a ton of subs and no views, they’re screwed and won’t make money which is good for everyone.

Video is over 15 minutes; doesn't have midroll ads; *WIN!* Seriously though, good to see you talking about it. The monetization issue is currently the most likely thing to slowly kill KZbin as a platform. Already we have a lot of people moving to other platforms such as Twitch. If someone were to launch a viable platform with a similar template to KZbin's, as in, give content creators another viable option, this would be the perfect time to do so. They'd have a lot of creators who are currently being _basically_ shut down by KZbin's new monetization criteria flocking to them.

I've made some of the BEST friends I've ever had from starting my channel almost a year ago. The reason I do this is because I love it (and need it to keep me sane, but that's another story). I want to grow a community, whatever size that ends up being. I don't care. It's still very de-motivating for this to happen, and if I was in this for the money, I wouldn't keep going. I was primarily playing the Sims 4, but I plan on taking a small break, refreshing my channel, and coming back and doing WHATEVER I want to do when I want to do it. I love playing a variety of games, I wanna try my hand at silly little challenges with my friends, vlogging, and just doing whatever I want and having fun with it. I can honestly say this past almost year of my life has been the BEST and the most fun I've had in my entire 24 years of being on this Earth. So, I won't be giving this up. I love it too much. Money or no money.

Love how metaphorical the dam story was, Captain. Anyways, regarding this situation, I understand the facts that you’re giving. And I pretty much agree with you. I kind of hate that KZbin went back and forth from lenient to strict, instead of gradually going from lenient to strict. It’s kind of silly too how I’ve seen several people want to be KZbinr Stars just because it seems *easy* to them, not that I have anything against them, but it’s like what you said about getting a job rather than a small monthly pay of

Nah Jordan, sorry, but this change does hurt smaller channels. While smaller channels aren't making much money, that little bit is still motivation to keep trying. KZbin basically just removed any reason for smaller channels to post here as opposed to any other platform. I really recommend Jim Sterling's video on this change.

My content was actually monetized for a while, but instead of an email there were copyright claims sent in on songs made for free use on KZbin that I used in my videos that removed it from them. Granted, I haven't made a video recently, but I have to balance school and work with making the videos. (More fun to worry only about what people will enjoy honestly though.)

I've been on KZbin for two years now and only sitting at 106 subs. Seeing this kind of mad me upset when I saw it a few days back. Like all KZbinrs I enjoy what I do despite not getting many views and not having a lot of subs. I know my content isn't original since everyone and their mother does playthroughs of different games but I felt accomplished with each successful upload. I'm not upset with KZbin for doing this, it just gives me another goal to reach with my channel. I and many other small channels got a loooooong road ahead of us.

I work really hard with my art videos, and they are only about 3-5 minutes long. For all of us smaller creators, our channels are suddenly not able to be monetized. I finally was able to monetize my videos again this month, and they're taking it away again. I definitely agree with the communication issue. Although I know they are probably aren't trying to hurt us, but it's a bit frustrating how they are suddenly taking it away.

I do partially get why they've done it, but it just seems like it's getting more and more difficult for people just starting out to get anywhere. But you're right, barely anyone had the chance to monetize at the start of KZbin, and if you really want it you'll just keep on going in the hope that you'll eventually become successful and make a living somehow :)

Something a game I play did is they gave those who bought memberships above a certain threshold access to a suuuuuper rare dragon (School of Dragons, 3 months and up gets access to Toothless). Anyways, people found a glitch where after the 3 months, Toothless was still in their list of dragons they could access. Well, School of dragons fixed that bug, but used a grandfather clause to allow those who bought the membership (3 months+) before a certain date to have permanent access to Toothless. Maybe if KZbin did something like that, where people above a certain threshold or prior to a certain date could keep their monetization, whereas those coming in would have to work to reach those goals, perhaps the backlash would be lessened.
