When doing the timing, make sure to set the crank pulley to zero to not get any VVTi problems.

Jonny The Car Doctor i recently bought an 01 is300. had timing belt service done by my buddys shop. but gpt it back with a check engine light on and trac off flashing read the code and its a vvti solenoid code. you think they might have set it at 10 and this could be causing the light. i already replaced the vvti solenoid 2 times with new one and light wont go away.

You don't understand how helpful this video was. I'm doing this next weekend because my crank seal is leaking oil. The timing mark part was confusing reading it off of alldata. But now that I saw you explaining it! I'm 100% ready. Thanks again for doing this video. Im sure it'll help thousands. All the other video on here don't really explain the steps well and the quality sucks.

I Just did my timing belt and everything else, I’ve paid 700 for the job at the shop, might be a lot but it’s worth it. They did a great job, no more oil leaks from the oil seals, the timing belt got 235,000 miles it, so it about time it was changed. Better the shop do it than me messing it up

You have a strong following who appreciates your info. I began today the 'tear-down' of the engine and separation of the transmission for all necessary maintenance before install. I have not found a video on the oil pump replacement yet. I would like to. Thank you for your video. This is going to save me a lot of time.

Dayco is not OEM, and you should vacuum out recess before removing spark plug. A complete job would include cam and crank seal replacement, as well as thermostat (all included with oem kit). Since the valve covers come off for cam seals, you may as well replace plugs, wires and coil packs since they have to come off for valve covers. Also a chance to clean throttle body and flush radiator and engine (just need a garden hose).

Huge thank you for this video I was having trouble with my 2001 IS300, engine rumbling and stiff brakes. Brought it to a mechanic and he told me Mechanic says it's leaking oil into the engine at a bad rate and that the VVT Solonoid needs replacing and he says that pil is leaking bad into the cam sensor and it needs a new chain, as well as new spark plugs and oil filter. He gave me an estimate at 2100 which is way too expensive for me! Been watching some videos and other forums and it seems obvious I can save a ton of $ by doing it myself. Also I'm a little skeptical when it comes to the leaking oil, as I haven't seen oily smoke out of my exhaust not seen oil leaking at all, so we will see when I take it apart.

FYI, for vvti 1jz and 2jz motors there are 2 sets of marks which are slashes and dots. Line up the dots with the slashes on the back covers. Put the timing belt on and tensioner. Rotate the crank twice by hand and the lines should all line up with the slashes and not the dots. If you dont do it this way you can bend a valve because the piston is at tdc. The VVTI gear may be slightly off and thats why there are dots. It moves the piston of of tdc placing a gap between the pistons and valves.

I'm curious as to why not align up the slashes on the cam gears first along with the slash on the crank gear.? Because from I've viewed and heard from various sources, that's actually the wrong thing to do (align with dots)

So I'm doing my timing belt. I've read and watched countless articles and videos on timing. The cam gear is set on the dash mark (not the dot) VVTI gear is also on the dash mark (not the dot) Crankshaft Pulley is also on the dash All three are aligned to respective markings. I rotated the motor by hand. First 360 degree rotation, both cam gear and VVTI gear marking where at the bottom. Another 360 degree turn (720° turn) and all marking are TDC. While rotating the engine, it was smooth. Didn't feel like valves touched. I understand this is an interfering engine. Just want to make sure. First time doing the timing belt on any car.

Quick tip for people doing this themselves.....order a kit in which the tensioner pulley has a red ring around it. The OEM pulley has 2 sets of bearings inside of it, and has a red ring. The green ring pulley only has one line of bearings and tend to fail earlier.

Hans Gruper which kit you recommend? Does the Dayco kit have this?
@hansgruper872
@hansgruper872 7 жыл бұрын
M B The Dayco kit only has one set of bearings. I recommend the Gates kit, or kits with GMB parts. They are very good and are actually stock parts on some other vehicles. You can go OEM Aisin, but that's kinda pricey. I ordered the DNJ TBK952WP. It's a reputable brand for a good price.

M B GMB is an OEM supplier for some companies. DNJ is Japanese. I have run things like oil pumps and bearings from them. Always satisfied. As for the seals, yes it will cost more. You have to take off most of the intake to access the valve covers.

When I remove the crank pulley will it move the crank out of time? How do I make sure is good
@GuAp_JZ
@GuAp_JZ 3 жыл бұрын
Generally this will happen with the amount of force it takes to remove the bolt. After you remove the crank pulley put the bolt back in the crank hand tight and turn it back to TDC. There is a small dipple on the timing gear ⚙ that will align perfectly to the dipple on the oil pump when your back to TDC.

Why didn't you line up the crank pull Top Dead Center mark with the 10 degrees mark on the lower timing belt cover? I know it doesn't matter since it should be still on the right timing but when you go back to work on it, the pulleys will not line up.
@JonnyBarajas

I had no idea the timing had been advanced manually from the stock config. After lining up the timing at 0, some of the pulleys didn't line up. I just wanted to explain that in the video for those people who bought theirs second hand.

Heh... Shit... My 2000 GS300 is nearing roughly 209,500 miles... No maintenance records anywhere to be found... Not even a timing belt maintenance sticker... The car is still going strong even with the odds stacked against; 20+ year old timing belt, and oil leaks. Yes. I'm working towards getting the timing belt, oils seals, and water pump, etc done here very soon hopefully. Been buying up the parts which are OEM; this is why it'll take me longer - they cost more, and can be hard to find at times. I'm also going to be refreshing the front end suspension as it has a clunking when braking off, and on. Hunting down OEM suspension parts is hard, and expensive... What can I say... I'm stubborn. Here's a picture on the ol' thing. Still looks good for being 20 years old in this picture: scontent-ort2-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/87455604_2748303235206624_288474128430661632_o.jpg?_nc_cat=102&ccb=2&_nc_sid=730e14&_nc_ohc=tyj1jRZIaRQAX9bRwSk&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-2.xx&oh=a52bc148b122ca5ecc634147d69f353f&oe=60215AFC

I own an IS 300 and it is awesome to see the work being done to replace the timing belt. I have an oil leak that is coming out of the cam seals and I have to replace the timing belt and water pump in order to get the cam seals changed out. So a timing belt job on the 2jz engine should be replacing the timing belt, water pump, and cam seals. Is there anything else that should be changed out? You should also wear eye protection!! just an add on: I removed the top part of the timing belt(on top of cam pulleys) without removing serpentine belt or anything. just opened the hood, marked my timing(didn't set to 0 or anything of that sort), and pulled off timing belt. no gears moved. am I OK? to continue removing serpentine and all the other accessories and replacing timing belt?

Wouldn't it be more sensible to put the gasket and the RTV on *before* you install it? ...Just would seem easier...

currently doing this right now, I'm at the part where I need to put my new timing belt on now, but it's such a pain in the ass! my friend and i have been pulling and prying for 2 hours trying to get the belt on, it's so tight. I know I have the right belt because it's the same size as the OEM belt and when I ordered it, it said it was specifically for a 2jzge, PLEASE HELP!!
@JonnyBarajas
@JonnyBarajas 7 жыл бұрын
You might have to compress the belt tensioner and place its included pin in its pin hole to hold the tensioner in place. After that you should be able install the timing belt and release the pin to hold it in place.

The Car Doctor included PIN? where do I get this pin? also what do I do after inserting it in the hole?
@JonnyBarajas
@JonnyBarajas 7 жыл бұрын
the pin is part of the tensioner and should only be removed to lock it in place. Don't know exactly where you would get another if its missing. After inserting it, the compressed tensioner should give you enough space to install the belt, and remove it to revert the tensioner to it previous state.

Is there a chance of the timing gears moving while putting a new belt on? Im worried that i'll put the timing out, when i try to put the new belt on.
@JonnyBarajas

There is a slight chance that they might move, all you have to make sure is that the timing marks are in the correct place before putting everything on.

What size socket to remove the spark plug? 🤔
@dustintunis9347
@dustintunis9347 5 жыл бұрын
There are generally 2 sizes of spark plug sockets, most cars take 5/8", the other 'normal' size is 13/16" which is often used in small engines like push mowers. You can also get 18mm spark plug sockets, I know at least some Honda motorcycles use them, I don't know what if any other vehicles use them.

I bought the Aisin kit tkt-031 and my mechanic says the Aisin waterpump doesn't fit my 2002 Lexus IS 300 stock 2jzge engine he said something like the pulley won't connect to it properly that I need a different one. Anyone have any idea of this if this is true or not? Thanks also I used k-seal for a couple months to seal water pump leak and mechanic says it is to o gunked up to flush and I need a new radiator. Rad is 3 yrs old
@JonnyBarajas
@JonnyBarajas 7 жыл бұрын
If you bought the kit specifically for your car it should fit. I believe Aisin is Toyota oem. Maybe they gave you a wrong part number. Mechanic might want to rip you off.
@cheyennemaxwell4697
@cheyennemaxwell4697 5 жыл бұрын
Aisin-warner is most known as a transmission manufacturer. Dayco is probably less expensive and comes in a complete kit their belts are reliable. Aisin transmissions also are made for several different auto manufacturers. Always inspect new parts compared to the old part to make sure dimensions are accurate. Auto supply stores do not always stock the correct replacement parts.

I'm not trying to mess my car up... any chance of a do over or at least an explanation... It's easy taking things apart, it's the putting back together that's hard... and you played music...... thanks?!
