Isaac Julien | Lessons of the Hour | Edinburgh Art Festival

In collaboration with the Edinburgh Art Festival, Isaac Julien, and the Scottish National Galleries, Shifting Vision created a bespoke film which premiered on July 29 in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Following in the footsteps of abolitionist and freedom fighter Frederick Douglass throughout the city of Edinburgh, the film brings to life Isaac Julien’s visionary ten-screen installation 'Lessons of the Hour' through the insights of the artist, Director of the Edinburgh Art Festival Sorcha Carey, and Celeste Marie-Bernier, Personal Chair in the United States and Atlantic Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

Wow! What a fantastic collection of work! I especially like the multiple "screens" used to imitate the "Salon Hang" which would have been the mode of Douglass' era.I must see the film now!

Powerful historical witness. We white people have not yet learned what we must from these lessons, and this is what should compell us to challenge ourselves to see and learn and join communities of justice for the realization of humanity. Justice is a public form of love.
