I read an article about Isaac Stern. After his performance , he was introduced to people from the audience. One woman gushed , Mr. Stern , I would give my life to play like you ! Mr. Stern , replied , Madame , I already have. An incredible Artist , captivating music .

When I listen to this wonderful interpretation of the remarkable violinist Isaac Stern, my heart is moved. It is the Jewish magic which transmits heart and soul the deepest emotions. I love Jewish music infinitely.. This very nice work and this memorable performance of violinist Isaac Stern. It is sublime ! It is a part of the best violin music anthology of the world. I saw a video once of a masterclass he taught in China (it's probably on KZbin somewhere). He kept saying, "The music has to DANCE!" Always think of that clip whenever I listen to or watch Fiddler on the Roof.

Itzhak Perlman remarked that for the movie, Norman Jewison wanted John Williams to improvise an 'overture' at the beginning because of all the credits. Perlman said that Williams managed to get all the 'Jewishness' into it perfectly without Williams even being Jewish. He was like Wow, how did you do it? Kudos to musical genius's Jerry Bock & John Williams both!
@ccaammiinniiito210 жыл бұрын
I was so taken with this musical that when I bought the cd of it and played over and over and so loud that my landlord threatened to evict me. And that's remarkable since she was Jewish. And over the years when I go to it on KZbin, my thoughts are that if I were a rich man, I'd resurrect this evergreen for another Broadway run, this time with Linda Hunt as Tevya!

Jerome Allshouse Was Rodney Dangerfield ever approached by the Broadway biggies for a try at Tevye? Don't you think he'd "leave 'em dead in the aisle in New Haven"?

Pauline Kael's description of Isaac Stern's musical prologue to "Fiddler on the Roof" as "harshly sweet" was perfect. As enjoyable as the score to "Fiddler" is, this extraordinary violin solo conveys more about the texture of Jewish life in a pre-1914 shtetl than any other aspect of the film -- except possibly for Topol's magnificent performance as Tevye.

(Cont'd) While listening, two thoughts came to me. First, musing to Stern is the equivalent of listening to a lecture by Roman Jakobson. Absolutely mesmerizing! Then 2) Another musical treat came to mind, Morin's Tzena, Tzena, Tzena. As I mused I might have heard Stern tackling this masterpiece, too. He has a way of doing things, doesn't he?

It's amazing how much this cadenza sounds completely improvised, but it isn't.
@Chriswbirder2 жыл бұрын
But it was. John Williams simply wrote down what Stern improv-ed so it could be recorded. It's why an official version of sheet music doesn't exist for this.
@jasobres2 жыл бұрын
@@Chriswbirder And yet, somehow, the violinists who perform this piece like Itzhak Perlman and Gil Shaham play the cadenza exactly as Stern originally performed it.
@Chriswbirder2 жыл бұрын
@@jasobres when you're Gil Shaham or Perlman, it's pretty easy to either learn it by ear or have someone transcribe it for you. Especially if you're Perlman, you just ask John Williams to transcribe it for you. The rest of us have no such luxury, so we have to transcribe it by ear alone.
@evavandersterren66092 жыл бұрын
@@Chriswbirder The ear is the best way to learn! But it's even better to make your own story and improvise. Because that's this music about, tradition. :)
@jessemoog53107 күн бұрын
@@Chriswbirder this is completely untrue. This cadenza is written 100% by John Williams. Nothing improvised. And there is officiall Sheet music for this i have the complete Orchestral Score of Williams arrangement. I dont know where you got this Story from.

The only thing that bothered me about this scene is the silhouette actor playing Fiddler on the Roof had no idea how to play a violin. 5 minutes of coaching would have taught him how to correctly move the bow and hold the violin.
