Black Holes are amongst the most destructive things in the Universe, but it may be that properly utilized, they might be the best places in the galaxy to live around in the future, and possibly right here in our own solar system too.

@@albertjackinson It's a thought experiment about a PDA that is told to ensure your office has enough paperclips. The AI could be in perfect working order, but even this innocent goal can result in disaster because the AI is not following human morals or "common sense", so if getting more paperclips is it's highest goal it will consider things like following laws, taking new orders, or not taking over the world to enslave humanity in paperclip factories that will convert all available matter and energy into more paperclips, to be of secondary importance and therefore ignored if doing so will give it even one more paperclip than following such rules would do.

How can something have the same gravity as Earth, yet a higher escape velocity?
@anotherplatypus
@anotherplatypus 5 жыл бұрын
 Libertopa EurekanAnarch Massive bodies have a much larger gravitational field. As the strength of gravity decreases dramatically with distance (inverse square), you could cherrypick a range from the black hole where you would feel an Earth level g of 9.8 m/s2 as long as you weren't orbiting around it and the ground you stood on wasn't falling towards it. Now about escape velocity. Have you ever played Kerbal? As you learn to play it, you'll invariably shoot for the Mun, miss it, and discover you're now stuck out in space orbiting the sun watching your home planet (and its moons) float away. Leaving a large gravity field is expensive. Once off the surface and in orbit, you're free falling, and can do it forever, but when changing your velocity to escape orbit, you're like a boat fighting against a current except it's a space ship traveling opposite of the pull of gravity. As you traveled away from this humongous planet-like candy coating shell around a black hole, you would notice its gravitational attraction doesn't diminish like Earth's but instead feels like trying to leave a solar system, which takes orders of magnitude more energy to overcome than a mere planet, moon, or whatnot. Hope that helps. = )

Isaac, I'm certainly looking forward to you covering Skylon and the SABRE engine. It seems like once it's a solved problem entry to orbit via a planetary body with an atmosphere rich in oxygen would be relatively easy in the future, given a suitable gravity well that we'd be comfortable living in. Spaceplanes need to factor in the rocket equation at the moment which inevitably means leads to a 'staged approach' or a carrier aircraft launching a smaller orbital craft designed to operate at higher altitudes. Carrying both your fuel and oxidiser to orbit along with the weight of your ship, crew, passengers and any cargo faces the law of diminishing returns very quickly. Alan Bond and Reaction Engines have been trying to solve the SSTO conundrum for some time, since HOTOL in the 1980's. I've followed their progress closely and have watched several of his lectures/presentations over the years. Once again an excellent video this week, more black hole videos are always appreciated :)

One thing about colonizing black holes is that the job of real estate agent becomes orders of magnitude harder. I mean, what happens if you're trying to sell a property orbiting a black hole, what do you say when the prospective client asks "What's the neighbourhood like?"
@nicholashernandez4611
@nicholashernandez4611 5 жыл бұрын
richardlbowles The neighbors are friendly, because who would want to anger someone that lives on a black hole? You won’t - almost can’t - be robbed by space pirates because the gravity well is too powerful for them to leave. Anyone living nearby will inevitably grow older faster, meaning you will always be the wisest and most learned person around. Oh, and you have an engine beneath your feet with the most amazing matter to energy ratio available. Safe, secure, self sustaining for the most part, and you live longer? There's a misconception you might be unintentionally spreading. Escape velocity does not mean you have to be moving at that velocity in order to escape its gravity well. That's just the initial velocity necessary to escape a gravity well if it does not have any acceleration beyond the initial shove. You can still escape a gravity well at well beneath escape velocity as long as you have constant acceleration that surpasses the acceleration due to gravity at the ship's positive relative to the gravity well. So if you are in orbit around a super massive black hole with an escape velocity of 50%c, but are at a distance where gravity is equal to 10 m/s^2, you only need to maintain an acceleration greater than that to escape the black hole.

Provided we see existence as emanation of power, then things like neutron star or active galaxy aka quasars or even black holes are more than fit for that. All comes down to what kind of life we are talking about.

I haven't done the math but I suspect you'd probably need multiple Earth masses worth of waste to have any noticeable effect on the Sun. It's still a terrible idea, of course, but for more mundane reasons.

I am very interested in your videos. In them you are quite detailed and comprehensively consider specific issues and their aspects. And I want to share the most interesting, in my opinion, works of science fiction writers: Accelerando (Charles Stross) and Looking forward (Jacque Fresco). If you read these works, it is interesting to know what you think about the representation of the estimated future in them. Successes in your interests.

Here on Sol 3, we have Jupiter to vacuum the system to keep too much debris from hitting the Earth, a small target, but deep in Sol's gravity well. Seems to me that a shell world around a black hole would need some serious system cleaning before being viable.

Some one should look at the cool worlds black hole highways. You shoot a laser round the black hole and then catch it. Getting extra energy from the speed it picked up. You can also get a push from it, so you don't need to build a Giant Laser. Thanks for all the videos - keep it up!

I thought you would discuss building a mirror surround the ergosphere and then sending an electromagnetic wave into it to start superradiant scattering which could be used to extract energy or if you didn't extract it, use it as a massive bomb. In any case, nice video.
