Notice what? His speech impediment? If you're trying to compliment him by telling him you don't notice his speech inefficiencies that's a ridiculous compliment. I actually enjoy the speech impediment, like the way his says "paper" very unique voice to carry very unique information, and there is no ignoring it. That would be like trying to ignore a strong French accent and saying " I don't even notice anymore."

I love all the episodes on this channel, but I especially love the more occasional out there ones. I’d like to imagine the idea of two civilizations communicating in different dimensions by making sculptures of themselves in the other’s dimensions. To the higher one, the lower would look like a stick figure on paper, and to the lower it would be some semi- incomprehensible shape. Maybe not possible but it would be an interesting first contact!

Greg Egan's _Diaspora_ has the colonization of a higher dimensional universe as one of its plot points. It's amazing how singular he is in incorporating such far-out ideas into his fiction, I feel like so many of the concepts in further-afield episodes such as civilizations at the end of time or false vacuum decay have only been touched by his works. Wish there were more of him.

@@MyKharli I'll be honest, I think it kinda falls apart at the ending, like Egan _really_ wanted the ending to be Yatima alone doing math but the plot forced Yatima & Paolo together. I enjoyed the Dark Forest strategies outlned in the Three Body Problem series. There used to be 10 dimensions, but every now and then some species somewhere would invoke a dimensional strike that entirely disabled an entire dimension, leaving us with the three we know of and reducing the speed of light to what it is now. A species would learn to adapt to life in lower dimensions and strike one off, knowing that other species couldn't survive the transition. Like the Singer targeting our solar system as ground zero for an ever-expanding reduction to two dimensional universe. The description of the transition as the borders of 2D space expanded to consume literally everything and map it all on a paper-like plane was fun to imagine

I think you're leaving out a couple of things. Dimensional bombs would reduce the dimension of an area, and the effect would spread and could not be stopped. The universe as we see now is a result of that effect spreading so far and reducing the dimensions from 10 to 3, leaving some pockets of 4-D. But the effect doesn't stop there either. As time goes on, our 3 dimensional life will continue to reduce to 2, and we would die with that.

First time I’ve heard discussed something I’ve wondered about with regard to higher dimensions: whether there are more than just one dimension of time. I’ve always wondered whether multiple time dimensions (woven together in our normal experience of ‘time’) could resolve to unravel time-travel paradoxes and the speed-of-information limit. Thanks for broaching this topic, and please consider a deeper dive into theories of time for a future episode.

You could have one time dimension that works normally being unable to move in any direction in it but forwards, and then another time dimension that you more typically experience and that can be travelled around in. So instead of the grandfather paradox you are constantly moving forwards in time dimension two, but in time dimension one you went back in time and killed your grandfather but you still exist.

The weirder thing is that BOTH higher and lower energy aliens were introduced in Star Control 2 (the Ariloulaleelay and Orz, respectively). The Orz are notable because they actually inject a conscientiousness into our universe, completely replacing the Androsynth in a form of Fermi Paradox. Because they are essentially Cthulhu, incredibly badass, and creepy. And when you visit the Ariloulaleelay in their own dimension, the X/Y coordinate system makes very little sense. Hey Isaac, this video reminded me of what the caller in the 1997 Art Bell radiostation incident said. With him claiming that aliens have access to more dimensions than us. The idea of extra-dimentional aliens sounds bogus but it’s an interesting expansion on the whole concept. Perhaps the idea of a multiverse or quantum-universe where "everything that can happen does happen" is really just how we experience existing restricted within a single "slice" of a higher-dimensional reality. It might even explain quantum entanglement, since starting in a particular "slice" of something would necessarily make another particle correspond appropriately.

I think the most interesting take on higher dimension aliens is the Law of One series. I have for years studied fringe religions, and treat every single one as agnositically and respectfully as I can. I hope I dont mess it up to much or get too much wrong but as I remember Law of One is one where people believe that our souls grow and become greater, eventually moving up dimensions can inhabit higher dimensional bodies. I think at like 5th dimension they believe you shed needing to inhabit a body completely and exist as a light being that can interact with lower dimensions. This is where we get like gods, angels, demons, and stuff. Most notably they believe Ra (the very same Egyptian god) is one of these higher density light beings which has taken an interest (among other high dimensional beings) in seeing humans throgh to the 4th dimension. It's a really interesting read and tbh I honestly believe it's one of those religions that sounds super wild, but the message is super good and peaceful.

the problem with moving between dimensions would be critically dependent on subatomic particles. The quarks of our dimension evolved 3 different generations of particles with the same chirality, spin and charge. Only differing in their intensity. Doubtless a different dimension with an extra number of dimensions or different properties than ours would have quarks that have more generations, or force carriers which don't exist in our universe. This would change how atomic mechanics work, and affect how chemistry works. Maybe they have something better than oxygen and carbon for life to construct molecules with. BTW Tesseracts probably entered public consciousness with Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series. Popular YA sci fi books.

that is a very interesting question, as even the fundamental lens focusing light onto the retina will drastically be affected by how the eye shape is translated into the higher dimensions. the ability to determine up/down left/right and depth may be drastically reduced or exaggerated, and the ability to determine a 4 dimension may end up mixed in as XYZ or replace one of them while XYZ gets flattened to XY, or some mix of time perception, or gifted with 4+ dimension sight, so many ways that can go. As far as mentally adapting, I do agree that it is possible as any computer can calculate more than 3 dimensions with some work (that has been done already for some things). oh, and then I have the thought, does light even propagate along the extra dimension, hmm (shrugs). maybe it's something like how the shadows (or whatever) cast in the 4th dimension are seen in the other 3.

@Zarcondeegrissom I could be wrong on this but as I understand it, light would not propagate through higher dimensions since our math for intensity (that's the Wattage per area) only make correct predictions when we assume light spreads out as a sphere. Not a circle, line, or hypersphere. Likewise there are some elements of higher level physics which work the other way: the only way to make an equation work is to assume dispersion across higher dimensions. I believe this is a (very broad) reason why M-theory requires 11 dimensions to work correctly Edit: literally just started watching and Isaac said like half of this lol. My b

I've wondered about this as well. I agree with what you say about our brains, but our eyes are physically 3D. So, I though about what a 2D creature might see in our world and I realized that his 2D eyes can only see 1D images. If he has at least two 1D eyes, his brain could form an idea what 2D looked like, but in a 3D world, he would still only ever be able to see a slice of 3D that was "in the plane of his 2D body" He would see whichever slice of objects he was pointing at. If he is rotating in 3D, then the things that he sees are shifting in strange ways as the plane of his perception swept around. I think that is what we would see in a 4th dimension - we could see shapes and surfaces, but they would all look like constantly shifting 3D objects to us. We might see a large globe with 5 smaller globes floating around it and not understand that this was a 4-dimensional "hand" and 5 "fingers" of a 4D being, because we are only seeing part of it.

They do not get too close to me because I am religious though not a fan. I practice hours of prayer and meditation. I have seen them and heard them. The ones I have dealt with are not too friendly. I have an angel that accompanies me as a spiritual guide. He protects me from those entities getting close to me but they send me telepathic messages. I hurriedly returned to my body and sat at my desk in an attempt to replicate what I had seen on paper. I couldn't do it. There simply wasn't enough room. i.e., enough "space" to do so. My personal intuition is that space is actually more than 3 dimensional, but the forces we interact with predominantly propogate in 3 dimensions, or maybe even it's the 3 dimensional components that keep things running. Maybe you have force carriers being spun about in multiple directiongs along multiple dimensions, which divides their attention so to speak. So things try to act in 1 dimension but are skewed about then try to act in 2 dimensions but are skewed about but a tad less, and then act in 3 dimensions, and there's considerably less skewing beyond the 3rd dimension, everything just kind of looks at each other and balances out, and the attemtpts to collapse to lower dimensionality reaches its equilibrium at 3 dimensions at most scales. So if a 4 dimensional object comrpised of particles which were enacting forces upon each other, came into our nearby space, those particles would be weakly mutually attracted or repulsed, but would be more strongly influenced by the nearby 3 dimensional arrangement. Thent he 3 dimensional arrangement would act strongly on the 4 dimensional arrangement while the 4 dimensional arrangment would act weakly upon the 3 dimensional arrangement. And while the 4D particle arrangement would knock particles in the 3D arrangement askew, the particles in the 4D arrangement would be pulled into alignment with the 3D arrangement far more intensely... This would ultimately result in the vast majority of the 3D particles remaining 3D particles while the 4D particles get realigned into 3D particles, unless the 4D structure is constructed sturdy enough to resist collapse. Such a dimensional collapse would probably be a very violent event because the density of the particles will be exponentially increasing while the intensity of the mutually acting forces would also be increasing. (Incidentally, Stable extradimensional particles, are what I think dark matter might be Perhaps other stable 3 dimensional arrangements existing in the dimensions beyond the 3rd tugging on us gravitationally because the 3D mutual alignment of all particles and their interactive forces are not aligned absolutely perfectly, just close enough to be essentially stable. While alternate 3D arrangements are also not perfectly aligned, but are stable, and this works such that things might tug on us from beyond the 3rd dimension but will be felt far weaker, and will only practically influence the 3 dimensions in which our acessible particles are arranged, and we act likewise to them... So our Plane of existence has dark matter, but we're the dark matter of other planes of existence.) TL;DR: Dimensionality is arbitrary, and we're in 3D because all known particles are to the best of our knowledge in a 3D arrangement, and this is why forces also propagate in 3D; however, The conflict between infinite dimensionality and particles seeking 1-Dimensionality, at most scales, or it at least in the circumstances of our universe's creation/formation, finds its equilibrium in 3 dimensions leading to most stable fields of existence being 3 dimensional arrangements. Furthermore, Nth dimensional arrangements beyond 3 dimensions will shock themselves into alignment with the 3 dimensional arrangements they interact with causing hyperdensification of particles, forces, and energy, as they collapse into 3D; meanwhile other stable arrangements in 3 dimensions beyond the 3rd dimension of our arrangment will be unable to meaningfully interact with one another for the most part, but the minute interactions might have massive additive effects on the [hyper]cosmic scale, and that's one potential candidate for dark matter. (In the event that this entire schema isn't total bollucks.) TL;DR of TL;DR: I strongly and irrationally believe that we are in more than 3 Dimensions, but we percieve them as 3 Dimensions because matter arranges at it's most stable in 3 dimensions. And force propagation in 3 Dimensions emerges from the 3 Dimensional arrangement of matter and energy, not the other way around.

@@stormstaunch6692 They are all higher-dimension geometric objects. They share a similarity in that each one of them can be 'stacked' or 'tiled' to fill all of space - depending on the dimension. So, start with a single point or vertex. It has no dimensions, so it is considered a 0-dimensional object. To make it into a 1D object, a line, you must make a copy of the point some distance away (1 unit for simplicity), and then fill in the area between. A line is the only kind of 1D object you can make. It has two vertices and of course the line itself. You can stack lines next to each other to fill all of 1D space. There is no need for this in 0 dimensions, because all you can fit in there is that single point. Next, 2D. If you make a copy of that line at a right angle to the single dimension that is there already - let's call that length, so we are adding width - then connect those two objects together, we get a square. 4 points, 4 lines, and 1 square. You can make a grid to fill all of 2D space, each square acting like a pixel on a computer screen or a box on grid paper. Next, make a copy of that square and move it 1 unit distance away from the original at right angles to both the width and length dimensions - height - fill in the space between and we have a familiar cube. 8 points, 12 edges, 6 square faces, and 1 cube. Again, all of 3D space can be filled with a grid of cubes - voxels are the 3D equivalent of pixels. We can also start to see some patterns that help figure out what might come next in this progression. Every next higher dimensional square/cubic object is formed from 2 X the current dimension 'faces' of the next lower dimension. A 3D cube has six square faces. a 2D square has 4 line 'faces'. A 1D line has 2 point 'faces'. So, a 4D cube should have eight cubic 'faces' and that is correct. There is a simple formula to figure out all of this stuff, since we are making a copy of an object, projecting at right angles to all the dimensions that contain it, and then filling in the gaps. If m is the number of faces, edges, or whatever in an object and n is the number of the next lower dimensional parts then to find the next higher dimensional equivalent it is new m = 2 X m + n. I know that's a bit confusing, so an example: to mathematically figure out what a cube would be from a square, start with the points of a square. m = 4, since there are 4 points and n = 0, since there is nothing below a point in dimensions. So, 2 X 4 + 0 = 8 points in a cube. Next the lines: m = 4 (lines in a square) and n = 4 (points in a square), so a cube has 2 X 4 + 4 = 12 lines (edges). For squares (faces), m = 1 from the square, and n = 4 lines (edges), so a cube has 6 faces = 2 X 1 + 4. The cube contains one cube, obviously, but this also works mathematically: m = 0 cubes in a square and n = 1 square in a square; 2 X 0 + 1 = 1 cube in a cube. This pattern continues as high as you would like to go. Also consider that it is valid to call a square a 2D cube, or to call a line a 1D cube, a point a 0D cube, or you could even call a cube a 3D square, etc. The next step is pretty easy mathematically, but the problem is I cannot show you what a 4D cube (also called a hypercube, or a 4D hypercube, or a tesseract, as well as a few other names) looks like because we are all hopelessly mired in 3D space (not counting the temporal dimension of time). We can describe a tesseract, project what it's shadow would look like in 3D space (like what a cube's shadow would look like on a flat projector screen) but we can't *see* a tesseract in the same way we can 3D and lower dimensional objects. All that being said, running the same formula again, a tesseract has 2 X 8 + 0 = 16 points, 2 X 12 + 8 = 32 edges (lines), 2 X 6 + 12 = 24 square faces, 2 X 1 + 6 = 8 cubic 'faces' (also called cells), and 2 X 0 + 1 = 1 tesseract. The pattern continues in five dimensions. This object is called a 5-cube, 5D hypercube, pentaract, and other names. It consists of 32 vertices, 80 edges, 80 square faces, 40 cubic cells, 10 tesseract 4-faces, and itself - the 1 pentaract. A six-dimension hypercube, 6-cube, or hexaract would have 64 vertices, 192 edges, 240 square faces, 160 cubic cells, 60 tesseract 4-faces, and 12 5-cube 5-faces, and the hexaract itself, of course. Whew! All of that with a little bit of math and a lot of intuition, analogy (from lower dimensional analogs), and the genius of the mathematicians who first conceived of these objects, like Ludwig Schläfli, Harold Coxeter, Eugene Dynkin, Jonathan Bowers, and George Olshevsky. Fascinating stuff!

IF a photon travels only at c (speed of light) ...THEN photons should be 5D. IE a 3D creature/object (like star) has to experience 3 dimensions linearly in the 4th dimension (time). Photon experiences pure time dilation because v == c. So, it experiences 3 spatial, 1 time dimension; non-linearly. ...This is where it gets tricky even for the best physicists. Photons have to exist in a 5th dimension of sorts: because v == c; and this causes complete time dilation, they also experience 3 spatial dimensions simultaneously (everywhere they'll ever be) at the same time. Basically they break casaulity and uncertainty principle. Uncertainty only works at v < c: v >= c it is a moot point, you can tell exactly where the photon will be (ever). In order for this to happen, it must be traveling in 'SOMETHING' beyond 3 spatial, 1 time dimensions @ v = c. That something would need to constrain it somehow, ensuring that there is a linear progression of photonic energy (light), otherwise a given point in spacetime would light up randomly, even though the light bulb doesn't exist there yet. There is likely t-subX; where X > 1...IE more than 1 type of time.

I'm thinking about dimensions within reality quite a bit. An example is how stars collapse or how black holes shoot jets out of their black shell. In my opinion the 2D universe having a front and back could explain this. Our 3D universe has objects collapsing into singularities (a one dimensional entity basically), so I don't think it's impossible for 3D objects to collapse into 2D space which could explain some weird effects like ... hard to explain... but the black hole's event horizon is spherical, it has a flat ring of matter around it, and shoots jets out of its black shell... At 3 occasions the matter is forced through a 90° angle somehow... Sounds A LOT like the adding/removing of dimensions/axis on paper in math.
