The year I moved to Oregon was the year that the SF Bay area family got stranded after they took a shortcut over the mountain. He died of hypothermia trying to walk out to get help. Later that year, a family in a class A motorhome got stranded for a month when they set out to winter camp. An elderly couple died in a storm when they accidentally drove onto a seasonal road, hit a drift and couldn't open their doors to get out. Freezing to death is hella painful. The stories are endless of people who don't respect winter in Oregon and go up the mountain unprepared. Never use hot water to unfreeze your door locks. Two days worth of food and water? Wasting propane for a camp fire? You are lucky you made it out at all. Please know what you're doing next time. And thank God for your sensible mom, the hero of this story.

@@isaacturnerit when you go camping in the wilderness in a snowstorm overnight, you should have FIVE days of food and water with you! Also, Don't waste your drinking water on washing the dishes. Melt snow and use that. Oh, and when you step outside, Shut the door!!!! Spare keys,..........you should have an inside pocket sewn into the inside of your underwear, and keep your spare keys in there. That way if they fall out, (which they shouldn't if you make the pocket right), they'll be in your pants or your boots. @akroll008 is correct. You should NEVER use hot water to thaw your doors! Your windows could have shattered! I'm actually surprised they didn't. There are many things on the market you can buy at any camping store, that will do the trick better, that you should keep INside your camper, along with your hand-warmers, and your truck snowbrush. I don't understand why you used your hands and a putty knife to wipe off the truck when you should have simply used your snowbrush? EVERYone has a snowbrush for their vehicles, where it snows. I'm glad you made it out alive.

A few tips: when starting out with new equipment it’s always worth it to try it all out close to home. Spend the night in your own driveway or backyard, or within a few minutes travel. That way if something catastrophic fails with your gear you can get home safely. It lets you catalogue things you may need to plan in future travels (like a shovel to get snow off the roof & dig out tires, a can opener, tarp to cover the door/windshield to keep it from freezing shut, knowing not to keep vital items in a cab you may not be able to get to easily , access doors for propane and gear may freeze shut, etc.). I’d suggest whenever you get out of your rig and the heater is on, close the door! Don’t leave the cabin door open while you’re gathering gear or taking pictures. It’s making your heater work even harder, burning through propane faster, and losing all the heat you could’ve retained inside. It looks like you were opening that can with some kind of utility folding knife, such as a Swiss army knife. I can almost guarantee there is a can opener on that knife. Before your next trip look up how to use a SAK to open a can . I admire you for trying new things but please please do a little more to prepare in order to make you safe out there!

Winter survival is a must. I live in the north east. I learned at a very young age on seasonal survival. Now I am teaching my son. Power failures, stuck in any kind of storm, cooking survival, starting a fire in an emergency situation. Ther are many KZbin videos on it. Please becareful and for future bad weather issues, stock up on propane, batteries just in case, watch the weather carefully and charge up all that needs charging. And stick up on non perishable foods for power failures. Also be sure to have extra heavy blankets for weather like this both in the camper and at home. Glad the family is safe. Take care.

Isaac, you should store 1 large towel and 2 regular towels in your truck so you can cover your windshield and drivers door and lock and passenger door and lock. Yes you can push on the door but you risk denting them. Another BIG no no is NEVER pour hot water on windows. You had me panicked watching you pour that hot water. Remember to put your hide a key back and if you don't find the other one, make sure to have another made. They are expensive with remote though. You should store pillows and blankets in a vacuum sealed bag. We keep most of our stuff on our trailer so we don't have to think about it. Hope by priming the propane hose, you fixed your heater. Glad you stayed warm. Many lessons to learn on this trip. Always bring enough food and water that if you get stuck, you have enough for 1 week. I always pack more than enough because you never know. Then you went home to a branch through the roof! No power and little food. You need to learn to be a prepper then you just don't have those worries. Can you tell I'm a mom. Shaking my head! What did we learn? Don’t leave the family during a winter storm warning, what if your water pipes froze and burst? Don’t go where you can’t leave to get back home because that heater is not reliable! Lay a tarp over the cab to prevent frozen doors! Letting snow pile up with the top up is just asking for several problems. Find a way to clear the snow off the top as to not fall on cars behind you and endanger families traveling behind you and risk snow sliding onto your windshield! I was waiting for your truck not to start! So many things could have gone really wrong here, just for a video. Great teaching video for your audience on what not to do try. Good for you for going out the way you did! A few bad comments here that are not deservered. Yes, losing the key WAS a stupid thing, but the sink, opening the latches and doors finally was commendable. BTW, bang all the way around the truck doors with your gloved fist (don't push on the door panel as it will dent) to free the door. Wipe down the weather stripping after a car wash and fet a remote starter. Also, a small fan blowing the heat around in the camper is priceless! We ALL learn from experiences!

I spent a couple of decades working for the specific Federal Land Management Agency Ranger District that manages Junction Sno-Park (which is where you were) and will politely point out that the Central Cascades Fire and EMS station was about 600 feet away from you across the Crescent Lake Road and that the highway that you were stressing about as you drove up to Crescent Lake Junction (Oregon Rte 58) was about 1800 feet away...and it's a few hundred feet more to the Sinclair station (which also has a very large convenience store where you probably got the pizza) and a very nice motel. That being said, many of the previous comments about assuring your gear is up to the task are well-taken and you should take them to heart. Safe travels and good luck in your future excursions...

Keep a couple bags of cheap clay kitty litter. Pour it around your tires. It will give you some traction. I'm living in my bedroom under an electric blanket. @isaacturnerit Exactly why I only buy Toyota. My first Toyota was a Corolla. I am from a part of the country that gets many feet of snow during the winter. With snow tires, my old Corolla had no issues in the snow. Now my husband and I have a 4runner that we just love! Toyota's also last a really long time. Good purchase for you!

Glad you made it through and back home safely Isaac and the truck was faithful to what it was meant to do, 4x4s are usually best in weather like that majority of the time. Stay safe and warm too. Had seen Jaylena's video, when you gotten home, that was some scary with those falling trees and branches, especially with the branches broke through Ember's room, so thankful she wasn't playing in that area and she and Jaylena are ok too. Sending lots and lots of love hugs and prayers daily to yall too. Again, be say and warm also. 🤗❤️🤗❤️🤗❤️🙏🙏🙏It'll be good to have all the emergency supplies on hand in events like these in the home and in the vehicles. Those power battery generators, like Bluetti sure come in handy for times like the weather situations 😉👍
