Stephen Hough is just... the best interpreter in the world right now.. There are many young pianists with just extraordinary technique, but Sir Hough just puts so much thinking into his performances... most of his recordings are just perfect because of it

Beautiful technique by Isabella. Hough is a legend - I get the feeling that no amount of hard work will get you to his level - he's so phenomenally talented. Under his fingers the piano comes alive - I was totally mesmerised!

Getting someone who worked that hard to enjoy it too is hard, is the feeling I got, but she was soon full of joy

Very rewarding! This masterclass of your coaching not only broadens my musical knowledge, but it also helps me work out my difficulties I met in this rhapsody.

Wow, she is amazing. Wish I could have either heard her play it again after being given some time to incorporate the lesson, or have the teacher play the song the way he's recommending it be played.

J. Custer if you go to his Juilliard page, they have his email where you can ask for a private lesson. Whether you ask or not is up to you, but with the pandemic, he more likely will be willing than not to teach an online student for a high price. Good luck if you are serious.

Stephen Hough is genius in terms of musical structure. I didn’t even notice that the prelude beginning has the same rhythm as Folies d’Espagne...

I know the Spanish Rhapsody very keenly. At the 1:51 mark, if I were Stephen Hough, I would say to Hung, "This passage involving the double thirds in the right hand--falling 3rds--should have accents on either every first eighth of every measure or the first eighth of every other measure. Remember that this "jota" is very definitely a sort of very quick flamenco dance in 3--counted in 3 so fast that you have to count almost in 1, and these suggested accents are needed because in flamenco dances like the jota aragonesa, often flamenco guitarists and dancers will accent on every first beat of a 3/8 or 3/4 flamenco number when it gets exciting. This will create more of a rhythmic Spanish feel in that piano part."

I only watched the beginning, but am reminded of what Anton Rubinstein said about Beethoven: "Beethoven cannot be played: he must be recreated." This applies even more to Liszt: Arrau said that Lizst must sound as though the performer is CREATING the music. Brendel was, I think absolutely right when he said that Liszt's music has an uncanny way of telling you exactly the character of the pianist playing it. Just compare Arrau's recording of the B minor sonata with Horowitz's earliest version!

Surely that young player should have the sheet music in front of her . She keeps having to look over at Stephen's score when he points something out on the score .

4:00 I don't think we have to play the same notes now. It's really time for the classically-trained musicians to start learning to improvise just like jazz musicians... Performing passively all the time kills the creativity of the musician.
