It was a double joke; Isabella was really 39 at the time. It’s odd Lisle hints at Greta Garbo as a client. Isabella’s mother Ingrid Bergman thought Greta was envious of her rising popularity during the Classic Hollywood age.
@annairb33 жыл бұрын
Well she said “take care of your body & it will take care of you” 💓
@alvexok55233 жыл бұрын
@Anna Marfa that's possible. I think though that Lisle meant that she was 71 at the time she took the potion, and not that she was 71 at the present moment. Because basically age was meaningless once the potion was taken and she was forever young now, she meant that she was 71 at the last moment that she was aging naturally. Which was at least the time of Marilyn, but no because she mentioned Greta Garbo, that she took the potion at least as far back as the 1940s. That was 50 years earlier, and if she was 71 then, then she would now be at least 131 years old. Or I don't know, maybe she meant that she was 71 then at the present and she took the potion 50 years earlier at age 21 when she invented it and she never aged.
@alvexok55233 жыл бұрын
@@DragonHeir92 yes, that's a good double joke. That's interesting that Ingrid Bergman, her mother, was envious of Garbo. I have a good idea but I'm not completely sure what age Lisle really was then at the present time. See my response to Anna Marfa.

I always assumed that Rossellini's character was supposed to be an immortal Cleopatra, and that the "I'm 71" line was just a cover, since Streep's character wouldn't have believed the truth. I recall reading somewhere that an early version of the script implied she was Cleopatra, but that it was taken out at some point (but remnants of her background, like the Ankh on the potion's box, were kept in). The ancient Egyptian theme makes sense, since they were so obsessed with death and battling bodily decay with mummification. Whether she's 71 or 2,000 years old, I wish we knew more about her. The lore of the film is actually really great and you could easily make a whole universe out of it. I love the genre of "immortality, but with a price" or "you get what you asked for but you should've read the fine print," where vain, short-sighted celebrities unwittingly turn into undead liches.
@ShadowSonic25 жыл бұрын
The Ancient Egyptian thing also makes sense when you consider the legends of Mummies being these living rotted people fits with how Streep and Hawn end up in this film...those were the Egyptians who didn't take care of their bodies.

We can at least infer this: If she was 71 here, then she would have taken the potion herself in the 1920s during the Egyptian archeology craze. Her hair, make-up, and, especially her nail polish style, just screams 1920s. She likely found the potion or recipe for it from studying relics of Ancient Egypt. She likes to imagine herself as god for what she grants people. In earlier versions of the story, she was supposed to be much older and comparable to Cleopatra. She had offered the potion to many famous figures throughout history, but they all refused. She found that only the shallow and vain would take it.

As a nature worshiper is myself, It's amazing how so many of us women go to great links on looking younger. Especially with plastic surgery and any kind of science that they have just to maintain themselves. The God and goddess of nature had intended us to obey the natural law and embrace aging. It is part of embracing change. The more you accept it, the more you age gracefully. Aging naturally is nothing to be ashamed of. And I think it's insulting to prolonge Any kind of surgery because it might affect your health in the long run. So ladies tell yourselves this, yes I'm decaying but I'm decaying gracefully. Don't end up like mad and hell.

Why don't you make a KZbin channel where you show how you get older every day? Now That would be interesting. ^^

In the words of Liz Lemon, one could cling to youth like Madonna with her Gollem arms or embrace age gracefully like Meryl Streep. 😂 I had to because this joke is so fitting

@ladyfire447 ай бұрын
That was supposed to happen in the post credit scene. Lisle sends her bodyguards to collect the broken remains of Helen and Madeline before the congregation gets out and drives off with them in tow. Once they're back in her castle, she pulls out two vials to reverse the immortality and ultimately killing the two women to protect the secret.

Funny how the potion is encased in the ancient Egyptian symbol of life, the Ankh sign. Loved the oxymoron in this detail. And of course Isabella's stunning beauty is just as lovely - it makes it almost flattering being Italian like her.

Besides that, the badge that she places on her sweater after paying for the potion symbolizes a plant called Sempervivum tectorum (Always alive).

It will happen in real life, just not how it's portrayed in the movie. Once scientists better understand quantum physics and how biology interfaces with this, we'll be able to manipulate genetics and chromosomes at the subatomic level. Reverse aging. Heal and prevent all diseases. It seems like fantasy, but it's really coming--people being able to live hundreds of years, if they choose.
