Thanks so much, I was wondering why my roller wasn't turning (it's only a year old) and I took it apart after cleaning all the hair and gave the bearing a twist and it still wouldn't turn so I got a large pair of pliers and gave it a little twist and it turned and then rolled easily so I just think it got stuck. I didn't take the bearing all the way off and put the sweeper back together and it worked perfectly! I started fixing this Oreck xl (maybe 2001) myself after my husband died (he always took it to the shop and it was never less than $100 for what I realize now is simple stuff. I decided to check out any videos on KZbin and learned how to change a switch, change the roller, clean out the junk in the area that sucks the stuff and delivers it to the bag. This video was so helpful and saved me from having to take it in to the shop. I guess I don't have to put it in the trash bin yet!

I had my Oreck serviced and it was only $29. About six month later the belt broke. I hit up KZbin and found all sorts of repair videos. This video is by far the best. It tears down into the component issue. Thank you for the post. I am on my way to Ace Hardware for the cloth washer. The other end also has a bearing and a washer. However, it is not as likely to fowl up since it's the part that is not under the pulley pressure. Personally, I love my Oreck, because it is light and it does work. But they do require maintenance more so than other vacuums. I will never buy one of their Steam Mops again. Those were total junk. I love the Shark brand for that.

Well get this. I just did the repair that you showed. Because yet again this vac needed maintenance. I'll be damned if the frigen thing locked up on me again. What's the brand of your Target vac? I'm sick of dealing with this Oreck. I needs Maintenance after every damn use!

+M Luz yup over priced garbage. Most women like it because it's not heavy, but it breaks down to much. My target vac is a hoover and it works great.

Important observation: My 9300XL which was bought in 1986 (by my mother) has a different roller than the one pictured here. Mine is wood through the core but has a charcoal grey plastic cover. And, it has a plastic grey wheel which DOES NOT screw off. Attempting to do so pulled the metal post, the wheel, bearing and metal/cloth washer out of the wood roller. I was able to get the wheel off the other end of that 2.5" post. Both ends have grooves that hold the items in place as they are put in place by force. The roller pictured here is exactly like the 3rd party replacement rollers that are now available on Amazon for about $12, free Prime 2 day shipping for me. (Delivered on a Sunday!) So, in my case, the bearing is not so easily replaced. I could've possibly replaced the bearing and metal washer (getting the wheel off after the post was removed from the roller bent the metal washer) along with that other cloth washer in the square anchoring part, but for $12? I'm just gonna let 'em deliver it to my front door and pop it in. Bam! PS - Complain about this vacuum as you will, but it is really simple and otherwise apparently lasts forever. Plus, it works pretty darn good and is light as a feather!

+Mark Dickerson yours is a 1986? of course it is going to be different, these vacuums are over priced garbage.

Well, I just wanted to explain that not all of the rollers can be repaired, as the Oreck rep below has mentioned. If someone's looks like this one: drive.google.com/file/d/0B2cvvxLfLQnhNVdEY3dGWjJoOUk/view?usp=sharing then it can't be repaired. (That's an image of mine.) However, though you've been clear about your opinion on this vacuum, MINE is now a ravenous beast! It's hungry for dirt and it doesn't want to stop, commanding me to move furniture around and such so it can continue to gobble it. Pretty awesome, really. I'm impressed! It has been sitting around for a heck of a long time just gathering dust. Had to really clean out the bag. Only took $12 to fix it, though in my case the vacuum itself was free. I'm probably too cheap to buy a new one. Garbage, however, at least this one, it is not. Overpriced? Well, my Mom payed $325 for it in 1986. It's a XL9300. I don't know what different one's there are but she did pay a lot! drive.google.com/open?id=0B2cvvxLfLQnhcVREcFlYSWJLeWM

I bought my vacuum a year ago and my roller is not like the one in the video, mine doesn't come apart to expose the bearings. I was able to make about .5 mm opening or so, I used a air compressor and ended up pulling some dust balls out but it didn't fix it. I'll have to buy a replacement roller. I am super disappointed in Oreck for using non-fixable parts when they clearly have done it in the past. I think it's a ridiculous that it's a workout to vacuum my rug, after only a year.

Orecks are well built vacuums they are made here in the US but if you have a lot of hair in your house, they will go through the belts and brush rolls. They will also go through belts quite often if you have thick carpet or area rugs, or if my belts change every six months if it doesn’t break.

Thank you!!! Have the same exact problem. We spent the same amount of money for our Oreck and I was angry because we only had it for a little over a year and I could smell rubber burning. I checked the belt and found that the belt wasn't moving but smoking! Tore it apart and I was furious. spent 250 on a piece of crap! The motor looks identical to my 10 dollar fan in my bedroom. So I am determined to fix this myself instead of going back to the Oreck store so they can d*ck me around. Thanks again for the video...easy fix! All these products are built to break down and I am just tired of it. Last year I fixed our washer that cost us a ton of money and only lasted about 3 years. It spins now but it is still leaking a little bit so for now we have it on top of a big plastic pan to collect the water until I figure that out. and I am trying to fix our John Green lawn mower, which will also be an easy fix. Just have to get the parts and now may have to get the parts for the vacuum as well.

O-ring & pick set, Harbor Freight, $2.99. Right before you put it up, turn it over & clean those 15' long, straight, carbon fiber Asian hairs out of that thing! Takes 15 seconds with the hook; less time than dodging the chair legs to clean under the table. My wife's kevlar lochs have taken out our belts & bearings too. But, some may have an even more sinister problem. It's called a Chinese, crap ass pot-metal end roller. The screw-on belt pulley is so fkn cheap that it may have holes or gaps in the casting surface. The belt has constant tension & holes are abrasive. 2+2= China sucks again. HTF can they produce intricate things like iPhones, but can't cast pot metal pulleys with any consistancy or reliability? Amazing. Anyway, Asian noggin-rope/cranial-extrusions is/are stronger than titanium.....tensile wise. They can wear out any bearing with ease. Sank yu foh leading dis.

We can not get the silver end of the roller brush off no matter how we try. I did have it replaced by a vacuum repair shop last year. That end doesn’t spin as freely as the other side, so I’m sure that it needs to be inspected, even though I clear any string/hair off my roller after every use. Any chance they’ve changed the design so that they’re permanently affixed? Have I mentioned I hate my oreck?

Bought mine at Goodwill for $15 and love it. The brush bristles were getting sparse, so I bought a new roller on EBay...for a whopping $11.99 with free shipping. Have had more trouble with Dyson than any other vacuum (clutches burning out, and plugging issues). The Oreck is definitely above average.

I bought a rebuilt Oreck 20 years ago and have always had 3 or 4 indoor cats to boot so I use it a lot. I have had to change the roller once, yes there right much cheaper on Amazon but going to check out EBay now thanks to other replies here. I constantly cut and clean out hair from the roller, I have really long hair too, and thankfully I have had no issues.....except one. When I take the back cover off for real deep cleaning, it’s a bitch to line up belt and get it all back together. It takes me a few try’s to line it all up just so, wants to pop off. Other than that infrequent PIA task I’m happy with it, I even have a hand held one too that I love. I am happy for you Iseektruth that you finally found just the right vacuum, surely it was destiny the day you walked into Target, laid your on her, and just knew she was the one for you so I very happy for you and your vacuum, that you found the one you could give your heart to and really love, for the sake of our carpets that’s oh so important right. I hope you still get the warm fuzzy like you did the day you knew she was the one every time you still look at her, and I really do wish you both many, many, years of happiness together and that you continue to be as much in love as the day you met, man, you make me so jealous I wish I had what you guys have. 💕💞💕💞also I sure hope your neglecting your beautiful shop vac, after all remember she has feelings too and needs just as much TLC from too.
