It is nice to see good videos of someone building something with forethought and intent. I'm am really getting sick of watching mediocre project videos that conclude with the builder explaining what they would have done differently if they had thought more about it beforehand.

I recently died a great friend of ours and painter, Kasue Hasimoto (Meera and Meera), who, as a child, and, seeing me work sticks, told me about Japanese carpenters, the story of how they worked was similar to a story about Magic ... your videos are as if they had made the movie of those stories, very beautiful ... and memories to Shiro, my dogs also sleep between the shavings A hug and thank you very much

What a great method of table joinery! The floating top allows for the lateral movement of the wood in different temperatures and humidities. It should last for centuries.

Beautiful. Love your job. My father was also a carpenter for 30 years. However I never attended to a special carpenter school but I stole his ''job'' by seeing with my eyes and practicing alone that is a useful tool in my life.

It still amazes me how we still use simple Hand Planners as we have for centuries (millennia?), which work perfectly, out of practicality bc many don't have access to the larger electric machine Planners needed for a large table top. It seems too obvious to even mention, but I find it reassuringly grounded in practicality.
Your attention to detail is impressive. I admire the subtleties of working with wood.

There is clearly a common art/practicality shared w/ Shaker, Amish & Japanese furniture/woodworking/architecture. The philosophy/practice of simplicity, quality & respect of material is clearly expressed in all of them. Sometimes I'm not even sure if I'm looking at a Japanese, Shaker or Amish piece of woodworking.

The "tapered sliding dovetail joint" will prevent the top from warping while allowing the wood to expand and contract. This is an elegant alternative to the breadboard ends (which I do not like). This video inspired me and I exercised cutting this joint with hand tools only. I tried various saws to cut the recess: large crosscut tenon saw, ryoba saw and kataba saw. The kataba saw works the best, because the tooth line is convex, only few teeths engages at a time. This will allow me to do a precise crisp cut and use a beveled guide to help maintain a consistent angle. I used the 1:8 ratio, same as I use for dovetails in hard wood. I used a shoulder plane and a chisel to cut the male part of the joint. I do not have a dovetail plane. This is not an easy joint to make, but the hand tools allows me to cut it precisely. I master the technique and the joints always turns squeaky.

I follow Mr Ishitani videos a long time ago and greatly admire his workmanship but only today I notice something about this video that has surprised me. As I see it the table top rests on a 'ladder-like' structure that is bolted to the legs. The table top is bolted to the rails, or the long parts of this 'ladder-like' structure. The shorts parts of this 'ladder' (the rungs) are joined with double biscuits to the long rails (8:01). The rungs at the end also get joined to the rails with a thick dowel that seems to be inserted passing through the biscuits (9:40). These rungs at the end of this 'ladder-like' are the ones bolted to the legs (11:27). This combination of biscuits and dowels between rails and rungs receive the weight of the table top and transmit it to the legs. I am surprised by this combination of wood fasteners and its use in a load joint. For full disclosure I can say that I am a just a hobbist, while Mr Ishitani is a proffesional woodworker, and very good one. So I am sure that, despite my surprise, the table is sound and strong. I wonder if I am missing another detail about this joint that I didn't notice.
