Dude I'm telling you, he's an excellent, composed interview every time I listen to him. I grew up in the 80s and 90s just loathing Isaiah and the Pistons. He finally got his just due by winning back-to-back titles in 89 and 90.

Max, please don’t make me love Isiah… please. As a 50 year old from Boston who grew-up glued to his tv for those battles with his green shorts and black high tops on - PLEASE don’t make me love Isiah Thomas. I already admitted that I was intimidated and jealous of his speed and playmaking… why’d’ja have to make me love him as a person? He’s such a nice guy. (I don’t actually know him.) He seems like a nice guy. As for his friction with MJ; for some people there is never enough… never enough wins… never enough money… never enough spark… and usually with those people there is usually something else missing: happiness. If you and Isiah and Magic and Cooper and all those guys can sit around and appreciate what everyone did and MJ can’t … well then that’s MORE for you all and LESS for MJ. That’s sad. All that money, all that success, all that notoriety and what seems like no satisfaction. Some day maybe.

I really like how you put this. But, it’s human nature that, sometimes certain people just don’t like other people as people. As a huge fan of basketball I absolutely love and respect what Stockton and Malone did on the court. But as people, I dislike both of them and would not sit and talk with either one of them about anything whatsoever. Perhaps that is how Jordan feels about Isaiah (rightly or wrongly).

@@netplayer23 thinking back 40 + years : we never had the means to find out what players on other teams were like. If I was lucky I’d see a 3 min interview on the sidelines with Magic or Jordan or Kareem during/after a game. Today we can analyze ever aspect of a person’s life. (And thinking about Malone in particular - some of what I found out much, much, much later on was just ugly.) I heard Bob Ryan say that it irked Larry Bird that Kevin McHale could smile and be social with players from other teams right up until the tip-off. I kind of get that. The more you know about players as ‘people’ the harder it is to be cunning with them. It seemed like LB didn’t have a friend in the world until he was ready to retire. Jordan and Isiah … that’s eventually going to come out in the wash. When it does I’ll have my popcorn ready because (again thinking back over the decades) I would REALLY love to get inside the inner workings of those two guys. SUPREME players. I mean best of the best of the best… and they just can’t get along. This is more than wins/losses… it has got to be.

Isaiah is in my top two it goes bird then Isaiah and after Isaiah it's magic. And then you get like Michael Jordan and who everybody thinks is the elite. I mean no disrespect to Russell or wilt. I didn't grow up in their eras, so I never really watched them play. and if we take into account the eras before i was watching, Jordan wouldn't be anywhere on my list. and I think they were in the right when they walked out on the bulls in 91. he's always got a bad rap by the media And I honestly don't understand why? he managed to do something that very few people can actually say they're done He's beat Larry Bird granted it was an injured bird but still. even an injured bird is a dangerous bird. like I said he's my top player of all time. I know everybody says Michael Jordan but Larry Bird constantly destroyed him So how Jordan is in that spot is just beyond me. I love Isaiah talks about Larry with such high regard and respect. whether he is backing up his players like Rodman which I honestly don't even see at the big deal was and they still made it a big deal even after Larry's like I get it. or the walkout 91 it wasn't the first time you seen that I don't know what the big deal was. I watched the game and I and I totally got what I did it. I was a bulls fan I was more of a Celtics fan but in that competition I was rooting for the bowl the Bulls But the way that they handle themselves it just made me an Isaiah Thomas fan for life. I know people give them crap about it but that was the moment I became a Thomas fan.

I was honored to be his paperboy at age 11 when he was head coach of the Pistons. He gave us tickets to the game for Christmas. I still smile at the thought.

it’s a shame the nba doesn’t see the value isiah thomas can add too a franchise. he’d have more of an impact today than he would have in the early 2000s. thanks to technology and 2k , these new players know exactly who Isaiah thomas is and will respect him as such. why he isn’t in someone’s front office is beyond me. he’s a cheat code today.

I think the league does see his value... I just don't think Isiah wants to be in someone's front office dealing with having to please one team owner or group of team owners. He's bigger than that, at this point. And he's already done that with Toronto and NY... I think Isiah prefers the freedom of being able to talk to anyone he wants whenever he wants. I think he thrives working as an analyst on TV for NBA TV and TNT/Players Only & NBA Open Court shows and segments... He gets to better brand himself, not just focus on branding one particular team. I think Isiah has chosen that career now, it allows him to mix with the whole league instead of only the confines of the guys on his roster. He gets to be more of a league ambassador like Bill Russell became than just a guy running one team.

Excellent Interview!! Isiah is a class act. One of the greatest guards of all time. However, just because Boston walked off on Detroit doesn’t justify Detroit walking off on Chicago. That was not a “league” rule of thumb. The only thing that hurts Isiah’s career to me is that he won’t admit he was wrong and mad, yet he tries to justify it. Just like Boston was WRONG for walking off on Detroit!!!! Isiah is still that dude! Great interview 👍🏾

If it's Isiah Thomas giving the interview, I'm going to be there. No questions asked. I look at him today and he looks very healthy. In all aspects: Physically Mentally Spiritually Conversely, Michael Jordan's eyes are swollen and watery. All the time. Everytime you see Michael Jordan interviewed, he looks so pitiful. He's shaking, nervous and defensive.

@@b9479, you're right. It's more than being a result of the competitive attitude. Here are a few examples: Bird and Magic. There aren't many examples that I know of that are as fierce. Their rivalry is legendary. It's true, they could've hated each other until the end of time. Until both Larry and Earvin realized that there are some things more important than playing basketball. Zeke and Magic. These two were friends until they played against each in NBA Finals. No longer was it the Pistons vs. Lakers for NBA's Larry O'Brien trophy. Thomas vs. Johnson TOOK center stage! Team mates and referees had to separate these two 'friends'. They had feuded for 20 years. Up until a couple of years ago during the "Players Only Monthly" interview when they reconciled. Admitting that feud was senseless. Will Jordan ever realize that he is no longer a Chicago Bull? That's the question.

The Celtics walking off in 88 was all because the fans had started storming the court. Completely different situation than the Bulls incident. Before the end of the Celtics/Pistons game the rowdy hometown Detroit fans had gone down from the stands and were surrounding the court. With three seconds left there was a foul that stopped the clock but a bunch of the fans ran onto the court anyway, while the Pistons announcer can be heard asking them to return to their seats, and police officers are briefly seen on tv escorting them back off the court. That is exactly when the players on the bench started to walk out to avoid getting caught in the mass of silver dome fans. And according to Celtics staffer, Jon Jennings who was sitting right behind the bench, it was actually head coach, KC Jones, who TOLD the players to head back to the locker room. The broadcast announcer even mentioned that they were possibly leaving the court for "safety reasons." And then after the game is finally over, fans rushed the court and the Pistons players along with Chuck Daly were escorted off by police.

Even Zeke, privately, can’t argue against the facts that as head of the old CBA he failed; that his involvement with the NYK was a failure in many many ways as well as college basketball coach at FIU. He looks great. All time talent and fierce competitor who played his best in the biggest stages and brightest lights. But from my understanding he did make a lot of enemies on the court who perceived him as insincere and manipulative behind his beautiful face. Been a big Knick fan since 1966 so there may be some bias with my perspectives.

Isiah is correct about many of the facts of which puts forth. And I always respected his talent. What he fails to recognize is that he and his Pistons teammates elevated (or should I say 'denigrated') hard fouls into dirty play. Almost every team would commit a hard foul on a breakaway in order to prevent a player from getting an easy two: however that player would usually just grab the offensive player and prevent his from scoring. Similarly, in the middle of the lane, other teams would grab an offensive player's arms and "wrap him up" in order to prevent him from scoring. Isiah and his teammates, particularly Laimbeer lowered the bar and committed dirty fouls that subjected offensive to the exposure of serious, career ending injuries. If I'm not mistaken, and I could be, it was the Pistons who reveled in, and gave themselves the nickname, "Bad Boys." That is why Jordan and the NBA and much of America, including the Olympic Committee, chose not to name Isiah to the Dream Team (although John Stockton deserved it more than Isiah). What Isiah fails to recognize is that while he and his teammates may have "paid it back" to Boston, they did so in such a way (with suspect dirty play), that it was considered unsportsmanlike.

The celtics were tough, not dirty by any means. The mchale/Rambis was a dirty play from a very NOT dirty player. It was out of character for mchale and any of his teammates have and will admit that. If u watch the play closely mchale actually tries to break Kurt’s fall in the very end- typical mchale regretting immediately what he did in the moment. In game 6, Worthy two-handed shoved Cedric Maxwell while in mid air. A huge no-no in hoops, even back then. But was worthy a “dirty player?” Absolutely not. These were in the midst of the most intense nba finals in history.
