I love the story of Lucias from the Roman novel "The Golden Ass," as it is a tale of the pursuit of magic and how a fool finds the divine through this pursuit. The main character is saved by the intervention of Isis, Queen of Heaven and Goddess of Magic, and becomes a priest in her cult. Something about this theme has always resonated with me, probably because of how it was paralleled in Disney's Pinocchio when he is taken away to Pleasure Island and starts to transform into a jackass. Similarly, the Blue Fairy grants him this transformation into a "real" boy, a salvific state of deeper realization of his true nature and the fulfillment of his deepest wish and greatest hope.
@Darisiabgal75737 ай бұрын
The golden Ass is a kind of parody on greek culture of its time. Isis is probably a plot motif in that story, because we need a magic that metamorphosizes the protagonist. In as much as the original transformation was do to a acolytes screwup, there needs to be a higher order to undo that. But if we look at the greek usage of Egyptian belief systems what we find is that Egyptian beliefs system are a thin fragmented and incomplete substrate covered with a thick layer of alexandria greek beliefs. The ptolemeic system of politics adopted the Egyptians, at that time the greek system of written language and religion was young and not well structured. The adoption of Egyptian culture gave the ptolemic civilization an air of ancient attribution. In the East the Seleucids synchratized their gods with the ancient babylonian and persian gods, in an attempt to do the same. These Ancient egyptians symbols just like now represent symbols that can be repurposed for any particular belief one chooses. As we see happening in the early 20th century. Despite the rather insanity of Crowley, toward the end he kind of states he really never needed any of these symbols, he could just be "spiritual" walking around.

GREAT VIDEO! The fact that syncretism is a hallmark of the NeoPagan movement often overshadows its prevalence in PaleoPaganism--to the degree that modern observers might be forgiven if they get the mistaken impression that syncretism is a uniquely modern phenomenon. So I think it's worth mentioning that Pagan syncretism in general and Isis syncretism specifically were a feature of Classical Paganism. In The Golden Ass, Book XI, Lucius has a vision of the Goddess, who says to him that her divinity is "worshipped in differing forms, with varying rites, under many names, by all the world. There, at Pessinus, the Phrygians, first-born of men, call me Cybele, Mother of the Gods; in Attica, a people sprung from their own soil name me Cecropian Minerva; in sea-girt Cyprus I am Paphian Venus; Dictynna-Diana to the Cretan archers; Stygian Proserpine to the three-tongued Sicilians; at Eleusis, ancient Ceres; Juno to some, to others Bellona, Hecate, Rhamnusia; while the races of both Ethiopias, first to be lit at dawn by the risen Sun’s divine rays, and the Egyptians too, deep in arcane lore, worship me with my own rites, and call me by my true name, royal Isis." In fact, I've recited that passage in a NeoPagan ritual and then transitioned smoothly into Doreen Valiente's Charge of the Goddess--and no one present knew where one author stopped and the other began. Of course, I know that you know this, but I wanted to bring it up because it's too often neglected in discussions of NeoPaganism. Once again, thanks for the awesome video!

The full song of glorifying goddess Isis from the Pharaoh's Golden Parade. Papyrus Museum 6. Ah, yes...Isis! One of my top ten Goddesses! (If you want to know the others, I'd be happy to share!) One of my regrets about the time I lived in Ireland was I never got up to Clonegal Castle to visit Lady Olivia; a friend of mine did, though, and said it was amazing and she was very cool! After she died in 2014 (if I am not mistaken), my tradition did recognize her as a modern Sancta, and we had a ceremony for such at PantheaCon in 2015, which was quite interesting for a number of reasons. One of her students/initiates was there, and said that Lady Olivia herself was present in spirit for the proceedings. ;)

🌙 I take the Thelemic Nuit to be a ray of Isis. In Crowley's main book she says a few things that reveal her identity like "I am Infinite Space and the Infinite Stars thereof". Mother of Horus, another key to her energy. I think it's not simply cultural appropriation but more like recognition in the mystic magic revival crew that what Rome edited out of the cannon fodder Cliff's Notes bible was common knowledge for the people of Isis and the Egyptian record of Zep Tepi plus the Book of Going Forth By Day falsely called "Book of the Dead" only because copies were found with mummies. Even the Sumerian stuff which is supposed to be older than Egypt only records a probably false tale of humans being a slave race and there's no instructions like there is in the Nag Hammadi stuff or the Hermetic lineage from Agrippa onward. Open the real history of humanity and Egypt is the light that illuminates all of the land north west east and south of it, tunes the whole world if the practices are up and running is what I think. Egypt isn't some random dream obsession for Europeans, the Giza plateau is in fact at the center of Earth's land masses. With the megalithic architecture there that could not and was not made by any hunter gatherers with copper tools the energy of the place radiates through the whole planet and her great coat of magnetic lines. Call it made up by moderns, I think it possible and even likely that these energies are and have always been part of us thus a real intelligence that answers to this name and I don't think the shape of the occult revival is random at all. It is somewhat make it up as we go along, but the archetypes are real and there's boundaries in place for anything at all to exist.

I'm impressed that The Secrets Of Isis (1975-76) was pictured here. Loved that show as a kid. In hindsight, I wonder whether presenting a comic book incarnation of a pagan goddess to children was controversial. I cannot find evidence of anything like a moral panic over it. Maybe some aspects of culture were simply more relaxed back then.
