In some of the more extreme American Evangelical communities, Cain is portrayed as Set. He wandered over to Egypt after killing Abel and set up shop as a king, even stealing the name of Seth. Heathen Egyptians then deified him. There’s even an illustrated book. I think it’s ironic that their mythological mashup is introducing the kind of chaos and disorder Set may have approved of.

@TheArmchairPriest Satan is a post-biblical figure though, the Hebrew meant something like opposer or adversary (some scholars claim Executioner based on the role this word seemed assigned to in early Jewish literature). The name Samael doesn't correspond to that title, meaning instead something like light bearer (though that is closer to the Latin 'Lucifer'). To impose the character of Satan on something far older seems incorrect to me.

Same dude. Became homeless in July '22. I was in a rut before that but homelessness forced me out into the world. Convenience was killing me but now I feel like things are just inconvenient enough to give me real problems so I don't sweat the small stuff anymore. The only people who talk to me are kind (arseholes ignore me) and the generosity of strangers has been humbling. So my view of humanity has changed for the better. I understand the Beatitudes now on an experiential level. I'm financially poor but I've never felt spiritually richer. I would never have chosen this but it's been good for me. I've got my dog with me which has been a lifesaver. Otherwise not having social contact much would be harder. I'm also doing meta Bhavana (love meditation) to stay emotionally healthy. There is a translated version of the Seth v Horus coom-off where Horus catches his uncles spooge in secret, sneaks into Seth's cabbage patch, then whips it onto his favourite tossed salad. Next time they're in court, Seth uses magic to make the goo talk to prove that it's in Horus' ass to embarrass him, but when the voice starts coming from Seth's own stomach, well, he just looks a bit silly. Finally, a proper episode on my favourite Egyptian deity! I've always seen him as one of the most misunderstood gods, and perhaps the pioneer of what has later become the Lion King trope, with hundreds of remakes of the same story: younger brother of king usurping the throne through treacherous means, and eventually losing it to his nephew, the rightful heir. However, the original myth is a lot richer and more complicated than that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that in the earliest myths, there are some references of him actually being Anubis's father, as well as some mention of him erecting a huge pillar that allowed Osiris to ascend into heaven. The dichotomy between his fertility and toxic nature makes sense if we think about the desert as his dominia: there is also life in the desert, but it's a harsh environment than more often than not will unalive you. Truly fascinating. Thank you so much for this episode!
@AC-dk4fp6 ай бұрын
In one version Horus and Set are Thoth's joint dads but no Thoth centered text accepts that tradition. Set only loses half the Kingdom to Horus and sometimes that's upper or lower egypt (no agreement) rather than the desert.
@eingoluq6 ай бұрын
If you love that, then you are going to love this: Did you know there are other versions of him in other African mythology? People who think the Egyptians were not black hate this, but you can only find Egyptian mythology in other African faiths. and if you look at the various versions of Set it is like he is going through a character arc: -First, there is the Egyptian aardvark Set, which dismembers Osiris -Pemba a jackal from Mande mythology probably even more evil that set. -Ogo the pale fox from Dogon mythology and just as evil -There is a usurper Jackal in Sere mythology who is more jealous than evil -Then the mostly benign Ntumbo aardvark from the epic of Mwindo from the Kongo. -There is also Chiwara the Aardvark gazelle from Bambara mythology. He is actually the offspring of the chaos snake and the trickster god, but he himself is benevolent and is an agricultural deity who can travel to the underworld similar to Osiris. -and Eshu the god of crossroads from Yoruba mythology. He is different as he isn't evil at all and actually repaired Obatalla when he was dismembered instead of doing the dismembering himself. He also seems to be devoid of the animal motif. Edit: I discovered that the arch thing on his head is a reference to the arch body of an Aardvark. The reason why those various animals are liked is because aardvarks create and abandons burrows in the earth, that Foxes, jackals and snakes live in afterwards. So If you follow each, creation myth and go from East Africa to West, it is like Set has a character arch until he becomes a totally upstanding guy.

@eingoluq6 ай бұрын
@@CrumpitssGeneral Umm sure. the reason why aardvarks are associated with disorder in Africa is because they target termite mounds. Termite mounds are the basis of all African creation myths. It represents Order, because of the social complexity of the termite. aardvarks would break into them, have a meal and then leave. the hole they leave is then occupied by Snakes, foxes and jackals as I have said before. This is also why almost all African creation myths, the hidden god creates an earth mound first. The Egyptians called this Benben. In Dogon mythology, the termite mound is perceived as the clitoris of the earth goddess. in others, it is the penis of the earth god. when the sky and earth attempted to mate, the termite mound prevented proper coupling and created improper chaotic beings. In various other myths, this "issue with coupling" is a recurring motif. in Egyptian mythology Nu and Geb must be forced apart. this forced separation would break the earth mound. and this is the mythological origins of circumcision. now going from East Africa to West, The Ogdaod, the 4 pairs of primordial gods are repeated in mythology. in Egypt and the Dogon, the 4 pairs are these aquatic, or amphibious creatures. but by the time you get to the Sere, Mande, Bambara, Hausa and Yoruba, the amphibious beings become seeds. I honestly think this means that all these cultures date back to when the Sahara was green and there was one large collective African group that lived there and they were the first to begin agriculture. this is why Osiris, Obatalla and Chiwara are all agricultural deities. So this means Africans developed agriculture first and it spread into the fertile crescent and not the other way around. In Yoruba, the 4 pairs of seeds are found on Orunmilla's divination chain called an Opelle. sometimes one of those seeds is painted black or a different colour to represent the "Usurper" Chaos god. now a part of this divination is 16 rules or systems to it. 8 for the spiritual realm, and 8 for the earthly. This is the 4 pairs of the seeds again. This is important, in Egyptian mythology, we have both the ogdoad and the Ennead. Europeans miss that they are the same thing. for the ennead, you have to not count Atum. when you do that you have the 8 spiritual gods (ogdaod) and then their 8 earthly counterparts, Osiris, Isis, set etc. Now this is where Thoth comes in. Thoth is the one who laid the cosmic egg the Ogdoad was birthed from. Originally that is what the Sankofa symbol represented. Thoth is found in other African religions in the West. in Benin, you have the bird of prophecy. sometimes this bird is depicted with a seed. This is important because Benin has another god called Osun. Osun, like Thoth, is a god of medicine and knowledge, and he has a staff that has an Ibis on top, surrounded by two rings of birds. each ring has 8 ibis with seeds in their mouths. one ring represents the divine and the lower one represents the earthly. sometimes however these 16 are on the same level. But it is all a reference to the same Egyptian creation myths. If we stick to East Africa, Horus is a more "local" god and has versions only found in East African mythology: Egypt has Horus (Heru) Kush has Merul and the rest of the Cushties like the Oromo have their version called Hurr. The other Egyptian gods, are either unique to Egypt or have very slight connections to other African clans and family totems. like cats, jaguaras, hippos and crocodiles all mean the same thing across the board. it is just in Egypt they went overboard and deified these totems.

Thank you for this wonderful lesson about Set. You mentioned Dungeons and Dragons, and it was through that game that I was first introduced to the Egyptian pantheon in the rules expansion "Deities and Demigods". In that book, Set was paradoxically listed as having the "alignment" Lawful Evil (I guess they had to have something to offset Apep, the Chaotic Evil god in the game's version of the mythos). But, in that long ago day in 1985 at the somewhat elderly D&D age of 21 when I first picked up the game, I've been fascinated by the religion of the ancient Egyptians ever since. Scholars like you have helped keep that interest alive.

By his symbolic act of "ending" Osiris's life, he was instrumental to the rise of his brother as the god of the Afterlife, Death and Resurrection. The problem, as in many religions, is that most people don't see the metaphoric truths but are literal to the myths. Set represents the indomitable strength of chaos but in Ma'at's service as he is the one who fights the serpent Apep who represents the forces of Isfet (the opposite of Ma'at order).

@@kaizoisevil I can't agree that the episode 7 setup was any good. Or the entire season of the show. Even the Susan thing. As soon as they said "she scans as human", the answer is "but Susan isn't human so we know that's not her". And the re-arrangement and NEW LETTERING to set up "Sutekh"? It was horrifying. That Gabriel Woolf returned to voice the role was even more disappointing than getting pulled on a leash. Not to mention Set was never a god of death (his son Anubis) or dust (his father Geb). And Set wasn't jackal-headed (that was Anubis), Set's animal was something entirely of its own. There was nothing right or good about that episode and I don't want to overuse the word "abomination" but I simply don't have a better way to describe it. After the work done with "Sutekh" in the 70s episode, or the way the spinoff in the 90s (called "Faction Paradox") did it right down to the Solar Barge, Ra, Wepwawet, his sister-wife Nephthys, dismembering and distributing the body of Osiris... ... funny thing. There was a lot in the episode you could point to and say it's very possible they stole those features from the "Faction Paradox" appearances. Down to the masks on his servants. ... the whole thing was disgusting and I wish Set would exist, appear and come "Osiris" those foreigners who dared darken his name that way.

I was very much looking forward to this video Dr Sledge and you certainly delivered. I think Set was necessary to Egyptian religion in the same way as Judas is necessary to Christianity - his violence and murder inaugurated the grand Egyptian tradition of the afterlife, the existence of which was seen as a great solace to the ancient Egyptians. Despite his 'evil' reputation, he never tempts people or leads anyone into sin or even into disrespect of the gods. His crimes are only against his fellow gods and they, being divine and immortal, are best suited to deal with him. I've read of instances where people born with red hair were considered 'Set-like' as were people of violent, belligerent or overly passionate disposition. Let's also remember that homosexuality was seen as a sin in ancient Egypt. It is one of the 'sins' the soul of the deceased has to deny when before the tribunal of the gods. Set's desire for and abuse of Horus (although Horus was quite willing by some accounts) was the first homosexual act. btw As an Australian, 'bin chicken' is a term I'm actively trying to stamp out here in the Antipodes.

I try to frame deities like him as being antagonists rather than evil. Can't have this type of story without some. I dig how close Loki's vibe is. He's the foil in a lot of tales and absolutely vital to the overall story.

This video couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve always had immense difficulty in my life in sticking to routines and creating order. However, my emotions are intense and burn through my body like waves of wildfire that often snuffs out oxygen and any forms of higher level cognition. I’m starting to learn how to use these emotions more strategically to propel myself to get things done. When in the midst of a wildfire my partner brings the much needed calm and ordered thinking of Horus through suggestions in how to approach problems. It’s enough to slow down the chaotic wildfires to slow burns so that I scan focus on completing what needs to be done whilst still following my own line of thinking that is often disruptive and foreign to those around me. This to me is the playing out of Yin & Yang (I am female and diagnosed with an atypical neurological system, my partner is male and more logical in thinking). It’s so comforting and amazing that the early ancient Egyptians really understood this. Thank you so much for this video.

Fascinating video, thanks for making it. I've always been fascinated with the Ancient Egyptian civilization, their history, culture, and mythology, having once been well read on the subject. Seth's physical depiction has always been a mystery. One supposition, which I find quite reasonable, is that Set is a composite animal, parts from other animals stuck together. The flat tipped ears from a donkey, the curved snout from an aardvark. The stiff extended tail I'm not sure of, though. I can't think of any animal that still exists in north Africa that has such a tail.

The Aardvark is nocturnal & comes out after the Sun sets. Also, the word "Set" has the most meanings in the dictionary, which could relate it to the idea of Babel. Although I do appreciate that's just in the English language.

Listening on Sunday, June 16th at 10:45am. I have attempted to *listen* to this at bedtime while winding down from the day. I’ve fallen asleep each night before the end. For me, that’s actually a High Compliment; it means I am truly relaxed. I usually listen to a video on this channel, Let’s Talk Religion, History Time, Fall of Empires, etc., before moving onto The French Whisperer to sleep. (I live in a shared space, in an apartment complex. I need the “white noise” to drown that out). I Love Learning! 😊 Thank You for what you do here Dr Sledge. It’s Very Much Appreciated🙏🙏
