India has 2 top-level football leagues, but if AIFF wants to avoid the AFC ban, that can't be the case for too long! So what EXACTLY is the problem between the Indian Super League and the I-League? 🙄🇮🇳
New Indian Football fans, this will clear those questions! 👊🏻
I-League: Once the premier, top-division league of India and formerly called the National Football League. This league is organised and run by AIFF and boasts of historic clubs like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Dempo and Salgaocar.
ISL: A newly formed league run by FSDL with AIFF, started in 2014 and have been allowed by the AIFF to run the competition for 15 years. Some of the known clubs in the competition are ATK, Kerala Blasters, Chennaiyin FC and Bengaluru FC.
In 2010, IMG-Reliance became the commercial partner of AIFF. According to Kushal Das, when in 2010 the investment came, IMG-R wanted to improve the I-League by getting new sponsors but no one was interested in I-League. The broadcasting done by Zee and Ten Sports was poor and that's when Star Sports came in and agreed that only a new league could create a buzz and revive Indian Football. And so the ISL started in 2014 which was not exactly run like a full-fledged league, rather a league cum knockout cup tournament.
I-League & ISL were being played in separate window till 2017. When the ISL got recognised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) as a national knockout cup tournament they started playing simultaneously alongside the I-League.
FSDL now wants ISL as the top division. ISL teams have a 10 year contract with them which guarantees the teams that there will be no relegation and if I-League clubs do want to join the ISL, they must pay a franchise fee of 15 crores every season. I-League clubs are not financially sound to be able to afford that kind of money and the clubs that do, are hesitant to invest as all the ISL clubs are already making losses. Multiple ISL club owners like Parth Jinal of Bengaluru FC and Rohan Sharma of Delhi Dynamos have publicly stated they would love a unified league but could we see a merger on the cards?
The AFC obviously refused to accept two leagues with the top tier status stating that if India don’t have a merger league by the end of 2019, it could result into an Asian ban for Indian clubs. So Indian football clubs could lose its spot in the AFC Cup or the AFC Champions League, if they qualify.
With the deadline APPARENTLY being this season, the conclusion hopefully should be right around the corner. Both ISL and I-League clubs have done a lot to help the game. FSDL brings a whole lot to the game and without them football will never become a big game in this country. Marketing is a huge aspect of any business, and football is a business too. As for the I-League clubs, they have been treated like dirt so far, but we hope for a resolution that sees them and ISL clubs play together in the Indian Super League.
