Islam in Fiji is the third largest religious group after Christianity and Hinduism. Of Fiji's total population of 926,276 people, 58,355 Fijians or 6.3% of the total population are Muslim.
Muslims first came to this country through forced laborers and contract laborers from India who were brought in by the British to work on sugar cane plantations and sugar factories from 1879 to 1920. The British at that time brought 70,000 people from India. The majority of them are Hindus with the largest minority being Muslims and they were brought from various regions, such as Calcutta, Madras, Punjab and Baluchistan. They also brought Indian culture in the form of music, clothing, food and films. Although the Indian system of indentured servants was discontinued in 1920, a steady stream of immigrants from Gujarat continued. It is said that Fiji's Muslims initially worshiped in secret. It wasn't until a decade after their arrival in the country that Islamic teachings were implemented openly.
