Wasn’t sure so much that he was weakened by staph, i thought it’s possible that Dustin’s style power and the southpaw matchup just made him a little uncomfortable on the feet. Dustin was always gonna strike hesitantly and hold back on combos bc of the threat of the takedown. So naturally Islam can be far more aggressive which leads to landing more strikes. Not taking away anything from Islam. His striking is elite level but you have to realize it’s bc of how well rounded he is and can implement a takedown at any time making his opponents defensive. I feel like in MMA theres this HUGE negligence for someones ability to improve. Constantly fighters are being ridiculed for older versions of themselves and how they performed back then. And almost always when someone hits 35 they just instantly are told they're washed up. I understand it is a common trend on paper but fighters DO GET BETTER. Poririer definitely got better defensively on the grappling here and this is supposed to be his last fight? Idk we really need to consider people in their current versions of themselves and stop talking about the past. Also I don't think that having a competitive and entertaining fight with a "crafty veteran" who has a lot of experience vs guys like islam and even his coach/teammate khabib, makes islams win any less impressive. You don't need to absolutely dominate every single fighter. At the end of the day he got the job done. And if he continues to get the job done, it doesn't matter if the fights are close because he will have passed Khabibs streak and he will have them most defenses at lightweight ever. When the stats make sense people arent going to care how close his fights were if hes a double champ with the most defenses ever in lightweight. Context always is forgotten with time.
