Abdullah Hakim Quick, an African-American convert to Islam, sheds light on the fascinating topic of Islam and the African people. From the beginning, Africa has been a continent of various religions and beliefs including monotheism. Therefore, Islam (the root definition of which is "submission to the one God") was not a new concept in Africa, and the Prophet Muhammad (P) simply came to confirm this. In this talk at the University of Florida, Imam Quick looks at the root of "racial" slavery while making a survey of what slavery was like during the time of the Prophet (P). What was, or is, the role of slavery in Islam? And is it possible that the concept of slavery has changed with time? This lecture is full of important historical information relevant for all races of people, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Other topics discussed: stereotyping, the separation of Asia and Africa, Columbus, evidence of Muslims resisting slavery in the early Americas, the present-day economic-spiritual-psychological slavery, non-Muslim scholars not using primary sources, and the connections between Muslim slaves in Haiti & Africa. (
Abdullah Hakim Quick was born in the U.S. and accepted Islam in Canada in 1970. He pursued his study of Islam at the Islamic University of Madinah where he graduated and received an ijaza from the College of Da'wah and Islamic Sciences in 1979. Like DigitalMimbar on Facebook: www. TheMimbar

I believe that there is an after life. I was raised protestant and still consider myself a christian. However I believe ALL people regardless of religious beliefs that truly try to live by the teachings of Jesus, love others before yourself, will inherit the kingdom of God. I'm tired of religious wars. PEACE TO ALL!!! GOD BLESS!!!

Dear Muslim girl I'm a Muslim girl like you, If you have a trouble covering your face, there is two different fatwaa's, the most taken is that covering the face is "Sunna", meaning its good if you can do it, but if you have a problem with it or find it difficult, then Just stick to the "Fardh" which is covering the whole body and showing only face and hands, but make shure your body cover is correct, and the most important thing is your faith, let this not affect your faith.

If you have read the life of Prophet Muhamad. You will find Islam is the first to free slave and elivate the slave above all. Read about Bilal (Black Slave) freed by Muhammed and elevated him as one of the Shabah.

Also, how did Europe not completely conquer Africa and when was the whole world afraid of Africa? For the most part the whole of Africa was colonized by European powers in the 20th century and not many Africans were given positions of power. Ethiopia was even taken over by British and Italian interests and only gained freedom after WWII because of their participation in the war. Either way, if Europe didn't take over Africa and cause problems then why is Africa such a mess today?

The simple fact is this concept of "Race" does not scientifically exist. Only Humans exist. And Islam acknowledges this. Abdullah Hakim Quick is one of my favorite Scholars.

Quran Verse 49:13 : O mankind! Allah has indeed created you male and female from Adam and Eve, and has made you nations and tribes that you may come to know one another. This means that you may acquire knowledge of the customs of one another and not to boast to one another. Truly the noblest of you in the sight of God is the most God-fearing among you. Islam is the only natural way for the whole of Mankind and specially Blacks, this is the reason why Islam is the dominate faith in Africa

Allah created the universe. Allah created the slave and the slave master. So technically they are brothers. Nobody is superior; nobody inferior. That is the Islamic concept of brotherhood of man. On that premise, it was easy for the Prophet to abolish slavery, although it was accepted institution at that time. He abolished so many existing institutions like idol worship. He abolished existing customs like female infanticide, consumption of alcohol. Why then Islam did not abolish slavery is mystery to me. To the best of my knowledge, it is legal in Islam for a Muslim slave owner to have sexual relations with his slave woman whether she consents or not, whether she is married or not. Instead of asking his followers to be kind and generous to the slaves, I wish he had much rather abolished slavery completely. This would have brought much less revolt than asking a people to discard their idols they worship which he did.

dude, the hijab and niqab has nothing to do with men, who are asked by Allah to lower their gazes. the hijab is about personal worship and needs to be presented as such in order for non-muslims to finally stop taking it like a sign of oppression. wasalam.

''castration wasn't practiced either. '' Where in the Quran or Hadiths is castration even mentioned? In Islam having a family and being married is very important. Men and women are encouraged to get married as soon as they can, financially. So I dont see where this castration comes in, as a matter of fact it would be completely against the teachings of Islam, which is a natural way of life for the whole of mankind.........

no i dont deny that some muslims acted well out of order, and some still do today, we will never deny this.. what i mean by hate is all this name calling.. that is hate.. like now i have to correct my self for name calling, i dont like it, and it lowers the conversation..this kind of talk does`nt get us anywhere..i apologise for any name calling. its to easy to be bias but much harder to be humble..

I have a collection of artwork on Islam's slave kings. There are some who have gone through a lot of trouble to suggest that islamic slavery was as barbaric as Christendom under the following title," Muslim Black slavery - Islam slave history of Black Africa..." My video is called by the same name. see my art work. its to remember slaves who were considered equal enough to become kings.

i do not hate you, i hate name calling, and to be honest you called muslims alot worse..but this banter can go on forever, the issue is , real muslims do not believe in slavery,or racism, we stand out against it. and yes any muslim who was involved in slave trading buisness is a bad as any1 else who did it, wherever they came from..to point at all muslims and blame islam, for the actions of a few ignorant muslims is just following what every1 else does in bias..

Collease, just listen to what the brother in the video is saying. Listen to the whole lecture and then do some research yourself...........Read the Quran and the biography of the prophet (pbuh) to get a full understanding of Islam........... ''the crusades and the conquest '' This show how truly misinformed you are (no disrespect intended). The Muslims fought against the pagan meccans and that wasn't a crusades, it was in self defence. The word crusades dont exist in Islam.

How can you call this a valid commentary on the history of the African slave trade when it totally ignores 90% of the Africans taken in that trade, the people who took them, and how those people were treated? Have you read anything at all on who captured those slaves in Africa and sold them to the westerners? Just Wiki African Slave Trade. And do you imagine we can't figure out why he avoids those subjects? Because it reflects so poorly on the history and religion of those people.
