Just ordered an A flute on Jonny’s site. I must have gotten the last one he currently had as they’re now OOS. These are amazing in their tone for the notes being so high. Mellow is indeed the right word. I’d just love to hear the voice of some of the lower keys. Anyway, glad you had the A there waiting for me Jon. Very much looking forward to it.

I am currently making a NAF from Tonkin Bamboo - although it's a close botanical relative of River Cane, it is much harder - in fact, it's the hardest species of bamboo that I know of, and the preferred species for making Pan Flutes. This piece was left over from my Pan Flute making days. It is so hard that it was very difficult to whittle it with a knife, even. It looks like this flute is going to be in the key of high B or high C. Anyway, regarding River Cane, it seems like it was once very, very plentiful and abundant in this beautiful land of ours, that there were cane breaks all throughout the midsection of this continent.

Ray definitely gets great tone from his bamboo flutes. His wood flutes and drones rock also. Got 14 of them 😎, it's all I've ever played on stage except the ones he helped me make and my first solo build.

I have larger hands; regarding the size of the holes on the E flute, how practical is it to use techniques like "note-bending" or "half holes" to accomplish different dynamics? Very important question. Thanks.
@JonnyLipford3 жыл бұрын
These flutes do not have particularly small holes for the key, relative to flutes from other makers, even though they are high. Ray's flutes respond well to 1/2 holes by just a slight uncovering from the side, that is mostly covered. Dancing along the edge of the hole, mostly uncovered with the finger tips is not required so you should be fine!

@@JonnyLipford It was unfortuatly the most out of tune flute I have ever bought. It was supposed to be an A in 440hz, but it plays A#, a flat C, D, E and G and then A# in 432hz. Even worse tuning if tuning to 440hz.

There is a rather interesting situation going on with the bamboo that is being used for these bamboo flutes. Most of them are by makers in Florida, where bamboo grows wild. The only problem is that in my research, I am trying to get a fix on the particular species and genera of bamboo that are used. I don't believe that the bamboo that Ray and other Floridian flute makers use is the same kind of bamboo that is available from bamboo dealers here in California, or elsewhere on the East Coast, which is generally imported from China and the Orient. I suppose that I will have to contact some kind of Florida botanical society, or something like that. I made concert quality Pan Flutes from bamboo for many years, and played them professionally as well, so I know a thing or two about bamboo. What you find imported from the Orient at bamboo dealers is generally either Tonkin Bamboo (Arundinaria amabilis McClure), Moso Bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides) or Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra). The traditional Indian River Cane (Arundinaria gigantea) is related to the first species, Tonkin Bamboo.

There is a flute maker based in Gulfport, Mississippi that does go out and cut his own River Cane. He dries it and heat treats it himself. There is a species that grows locally there.
@naiman45352 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyLipford Yeah, but is that what Ray uses for his flutes? And other Floridian flute makers like Erik the Flutemaker - what do they use? That's what I want to know. River Cane is cool - I bought a Native Flute made from River Cane when I was visiting a friend in North Carolina, and we went to a trading post on the Cherokee reservation. River Cane is OK, and has a nice sweet bamboo sound, basically, but it has a few drawbacks, in my opinion. But thanks for your ever-present desire to help, Jonny! Happy New Year to you and all your family!

Thanks Jonny, I love great tone on those flutes. I'd buy all 3 if I wasn't saving for a handpan ;) BTW, is the camera you currently use to record your videos like this the same one as on your Amazon gear page? Does the camera you use record directly to a computer when connected, or are you recording to a memory card? I'm going to start doing actual videos for my music instead of motion backgrounds, and I want to do it right b/c I'm on a fixed income don't have room for mistakes. Take care of you and yours, stay safe, healthy and happy!
