Early this summer we set out to detect a town site that I had visited last year. This time I brought some more of my friends along with me. Shoal Bay BC was once the site of the town of Thurlow which had a mining district named after it. There are different reports to how many people lived in the town, some up to 3000 people. After extensive hunting in the forest around the site I am confident that the town never reached more than possibly a couple hundred people and that for a short amount of time. This is based on the quantity of items left behind, and the area of which the debris field from the town covers. None the less a strange phenomena has occurred on the beach while metal detecting there. So far a high number of half dollar coins has been found there. The dates are as follows. 1876 US, 1894 Can, 1898 US, 1900 Can, 1965 Can. Why are there specifically a high number of half dollars on this beach? What do you think?
