Retirement - Keys Christmas - Lobster Diving - Projects - Miami Boat Show
In this episode we're wrapping up August 2018 through February 2019, pretty quickly.
Before leaving, the neighbors invited us out on the "luxury liner", so me and Grace went with them, and Grace caught her first lobster! We limited out on Lobster and had a grand dinner! Thanks Sue and Art!
A few days later, I flew back to ABQ as Sandy and the kids started the day to day grind of School, soccer and extra curricular activities.
In September we all flew in to Texas for a long weekend to meet up and go to a family reunion at my Aunt and Uncle's bay house. We got to spend time together and with our extended family.
October was more of the day to day.
In November, I went on terminal leave, which is military speak for no more work and finally made it to the Keys in time for Thanksgiving and Xmas.
On Dec 14th we conducted my official retirement from the Navy, followed up by amazing night on Duval Street in Key West. Then, on Januarary 1st 2019, after 23.5 years I became a civilian again.
A week later was Christmas in the Keys.
Okay, so we finally got to hit the breaks in January after the kids went back to school! No more logistics, no more moving vans, all our stuff has been sold, completely downsized and we could finally just enjoy some much needed down time.
We did quite a bit of fishing, stone crabbing, and hanging out on the water over the winter.
My Aunt Diane uncle Dave bought us a really nice Stand Up Paddle Board as a retirement gift and we got some good use out of it too!
In January Sandy and the Kids started dive lessons and all ended up Open Water Divers!
In February, we hit the Miami boat show to check out boats and let the kids see what the far off future would have in store for them.
We also got some small and large projects knocked out.

We still only have our Catalina 22 sailboat that we use on the lakes here. Hubby has 7.5 years til retirement, then we'll likely buy a catamaran 😁

Check out gone with the Wynns and sailing nahoa you tube channels, those are ones we watch a lot. The Wynns started in an RV then bought a catamaran.

@@lauracompton1902 we follow SV Delos and La Vaga Bond mostly, but have seen a few of the Wynn's RV and Sailing, believe they are in S. Pacific ATM. We bought tickets today for a meetup with the Delos crew at the Annapolis boat show in October. Should be good fun!

The baby octopus was cool. I've never been crabbing before but why did you just break off 1 claw and then I assume you threw it back in? Most of the crab is edible isn't it?

Great question, I should have put that in the video. Actually, Stone Crab is a renewable resource. They grow (molt) their claws back to legal length in 2-3 years and typically live 8-9 years. Legally you can take both claws (if of legal size) and throw the crab back. I suppose you could eat the body like Blue Crab, but don't think that is legal and never heard of anyone doing it with Stone Crab. Even more info... there is debate on whether taking one or two claws (if legal size) is better for the crab. Some say 1 claw and they will still walk around "thinking" they can defend themselves (but can't), others say take both and they "hole up" until they CAN defend themselves. We always take both if legal sized, but that's somewhat rare to find. When I say "some say", I mean I read it in a fish and wildlife magazine years ago. ~Aric

HomeAdrift Very interesting but knowing that the grow back relatively quickly I guess in the long run it makes sense especially if they are just going to shed them naturally anyway. Thx for the info. BTW tell Triston his hair looks better, not because he's a boy but because it was so flat.
