I’m not here because of homework, I’m here because this stuff is interesting. It’s depressing to see all the comments from kids and teens actually mad that they have to watch this. This is your own history. Aren’t y’all interested in anything besides tick tock? Do you understand how utterly boring that makes you? Be a well rounded person who has interesting things to talk about. Cultivate some interests and a personality outside of the internet. This isn’t shade, this is genuine advice from someone who was your age not too long ago. No one likes a boring, ignorant, self centered person.

My great-great-grandparents emigrated from Italy to the USA, and passed through Ellis Island. When I visited NY I took the guided tour of the place, I was shocked by the history of those corridors and halls and rooms, how much melancholy in the air. They went to Michigan but later returned to Italy.

A damn country where people think being American means eating cheeseburgers, fries, pizza and soliciting sex online. What kind of country is that? Not much. That was a great documentary. We've heard for years about Ellis Island and how everyone had to do this and that, not really knowing exactly what they went through. It was awful but when you come from hell anything is great. I can't even imagine how happy and hopeful they were when they saw the statue of liberty.

SOMEONE HMU WITH ANSWERS 1. Why did people leave Southern and Eastern Europe? 2. What were conditions like in steerage? 3. How did one passenger describe how people were treated in steerage? 4. Why did the steamship companies crow so many people into steerage? 5. Why was Ellis Island so frightening? 6. Why were the ship manifests so important? 7. Why did people have to have money? 8. So what did it take to leave your home, travel in steerage, and go through Ellis Island experience?

The answers are in the film :-) Maybe #8 is not, but if not it's because they want you to put yourself in the position of people who made the trip. Just THINK about it. It's not a hard question.

The immigrants were considered second class people, were crowded into steerage aboard steamships and treated like cargo as they were placed on a ship manifest. The steamship lines got paid per immigrant so the more they could crowd on to their ship then the more money they got paid. The Statue of Liberty was like a beacon of hope for a new life and adventure. It was perhaps a bit frightening for the immigrants on Ellis Island because it was all a new experience and journey into the unknown. " I was living in Ireland where, at the time, the prospects for good employment were quite grim. Sitting there in the pub with a glass of beer I wondered what I could do to improve my future. I overheard a couple of sailors talking about sailing out of Dublin with immigrants. I was intrigued by what they were saying and had to ask. I went to their table and asked them about it. One of the sailors told me they worked for a steamship company aboard a ship. This ship was transporting immigrants to America, a place called Ellis Island in New York City. That was it, my opportunity for a bright future. I got the information from them on how to go about getting documents to immigrate. They said I'd need five pounds money on me at Ellis Island. No worry, I had ten pounds total. I was excited but also worried. Why ? The Atlantic Ocean was vast, cold, stormy and deep. That steamship would seem like a toy boat. " Time passes by for a departure wait. " The time has arrived for me to board the steamship. All I have with me is a large travel bag of some clothes and significant personal items. I will be starting all over again in a new land. The ship's purser asks my name, country, age, occupation, education, native language and marital status. I give him that information and a steward guides me to steerage housing where I'm assigned. We get there and I get worried because the space is small and overcrowded. I can't wait to get to America ! This will be a small price to pay for a new start. I put my bag in a safe place and go up on the deck to see Ireland disappear from view as the steamship sails away. It quickly gets me sad because I'll miss my relatives and good friends. Now we are out quite far on the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby storm causes the water to get rough and create large waves. I suddenly get seasick so the soup and bread I ate for lunch just after we left the dock is coming right back up. I head down to my steerage bunk, lay down and try to feel better. There isn't much room to move around down below here in steerage class. I should only have to endure this for a few more days. " Welcome to my new home, America. " The steamship has arrived and we are slowly unloaded on to a ferry, like so much cargo, that will take us to Ellis Island. A US immigration official escorts us into the grand hall, a large room full of people, constant activity and deafening noise. He instructs us to sit down and wait for the man at the desk to look on the ship manifest and call our name. Then go up to that desk. I get through that step of immigration application paperwork and the next two days of medical checks with poking and prodding. Whew, finally got through that. Now to show my letter from a relative saying, to US immigration authorities, that I won't be a financial burden on the US government. " Welcome to America. " Not only was the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean scary but so was going through the immigration process on Ellis Island. All they needed was the smallest reason to send me back to Ireland. I heard it is usually medical, psychological or physical. Fortunately I passed through those checks just fine but I was worried a little. Now to step outside and walk to the dock. They said a ferry will take us across the river to the city docks. The ferry is getting closer now. That was a short boat ride but I'm tired of sailing around on water. Now to go into this immigration office so they can check my documents from Ellis Island showing I've been approved and admitted to the US. " Final step is finished. " I finally got finished with everything and it's time to explore. I want to get started by trying to get an apartment or room in a boarding house. Wow, New York City is huge and I'll get constantly lost. It's bigger than Dublin and London. I have plenty of time to find my way around because now I live here. It's good that English is my language so I can communicate like the American citizen that I soon will be. "

Ship manifests were important because the ship masters were required by law to have them ready for US immigration officials before they reached port in America. The manifests would have important info on like names, ages, sexes, occupations, national origin of every person on boards this would help with immigration records. Immigrants needed money so they could survive. They would need to pay for their ticket and food for the journey and when they arrived. Meals were only free on Ellis Island if the immigrants were detained (less than 1% were detained) Furthermore, starting in 1885 I believe each immigrant was taxed 50 cents when they arrived. This would pay for the immigration system (pays for the salaries of immigration officials, etc.)

The immigrants were placed in steerage and placed on a ship manifest just like cargo. They had to have money with them to get started on their new life in America because the US government didn't want to help them financially. They were considered second class, placed in steerage and the steamship lines got paid by the number of immigrants they had onboard. Welcome to the US to legal immigrants past and present.
