James that looks sick. Crazy to see your house empty and you heading for open waters! It looks really fun!

Should ease your mainsheet when raising the main and point more windward. She's struggling cause its not luffing, its filling in and shes fighting the friction.

@easyboatcooking-svwindwake1024 жыл бұрын
@@svstellaj1530 Yes the previous owner lost the staysail in a storm. We are on the market for one. Since I want to replace all the sails in a year or 2 I am looking for a second hand. What I really want to buy is a code zero for next summer. A lot of light wind and that would be great.

5.5 knots speed in 10 knots of wind? That's decent for a full keel, why is everyone complaining Island Packets are slow?
@easyboatcooking-svwindwake1024 жыл бұрын
yes, that is strange. We have an IP 32 and we do half of the wind speed by a light wind and a bit more over 10 kts. Honestly, for a full keel the performance is really good. Not a racer for sure but very decent for a heavy cruiser.

I have an IP35 give me 12 knots wind and I'll hit 6 knots, just don't understand where the idea of the IP being a slow vessel. just how fast are these other boats going🤔🤔🤔🤔. Lovely video by the way!!
@svstellaj15303 жыл бұрын
I completely agree!! We didn't buy a sailboat because we are in a hurry, but with the reputation of being "slow", I had expected way worse! Thanks for checking out my channel, and if you haven't done so already, check out the Jones Island video. We raise the spinnaker and I show the speeds we get with that. Take care Terry!

Hey! We are looking at this same model. Do you have private message I could ask you a couple of questions? The fact you have gone through the process with this particular boat would be an awesome help to us first time boat buying newbies!!!

What’s the conclusion on general cruising speed?
@svstellaj15302 жыл бұрын
As I write this comment we are crossing the Sea of Cortes for a 190nm journey. I’m planning on an average speed of 6kts but keeping my fingers crossed for a bit more.
@Flipdupza2 жыл бұрын
@@svstellaj1530 that’s great I guess faster than I heard too. But the sea of Cortez does also not have so much wind? Two years down the line how are you guys finding your life choices? More loving it than not? I like the IP and also looking at options for 2 years from now. Biggest challenge is if the dog should come or not. How is the lab coping?
@svstellaj15302 жыл бұрын
@@Flipdupza it’s a great life cruising, we haven’t regretted it once. Our IP was a great choice for comfort and stability though the short waterline and full keel might slow her down a bit. We made the passage across the SOC in 33 hours at an average speed of 5.75kts while others made it in 28-30 hours. If you haven’t watched my vid “cruising with a very big dog” then check it out. I’ll give some insight to what some of the tribulations that come with having a dog on board.

No dinghy on the shake down cruise - that's confidence, maybe overconfidence. I'd feel better if the nets were still up to protect the dog from some impulsive leap overboard, which could be a deadly whether in the open sea or near the dock, especially with no dinghy, and the 6-man craft still not certified. But everything worked out well, this time.
@svstellaj15304 жыл бұрын
Luckily during the shake down there were plenty of other cruisers around to help out if needed. Our dog is old and she rarely does anything spontaneous so we knew she would be okay as long as she was in the cockpit. Still, I hear what you are saying:)

Ol Bobby sure built a nice SAFE cruiser with that one. Great choice for a blue water boat! Amy and I are excited to see where she takes you guys. We’ve been following cruisers for years and it’s nice to finally know actually know someone doing it. Sailing Klamath Lake isn’t the worst thing in the world, but boy are we envious of you two. “At sail I learned how little a person needs, not how much” cheers you guys!

SV Stella J hey guys, congrats! Just found your video. I’m an owner of an island packet 38 as well. I noticed on your shakeout cruise your reefing lines we’re not run correctly, The aft lines should run up and through the cringles and then be tied off to the boom. We had to learn the hard way. Hit me up on IG @JPaulDetroit for more info. Looking forward to watching your adventures. Cheers 🍻
