Hello, Thanks for the post. I especially like the De la Riva recovery using Reverse de la Riva. I´ve been drilling this technique this whole week and have noticed that "uke" tends to automatically go to push down the posting leg as I sit up before I´m even able to use it to post off of it and put my hook in deep. Is there a technique I can use before this one to set it up and not have that happen? I know I can go to ball and chain if he gives me the far cuff but more than that I´d like to be able to add the technique shown here to my arsenal. Thanks again.

Are you talking about the right foot posting on your partner's upper thigh if you are attempting to shoot the deep hook with your left? If so this is really a matter of timing, kuzushi, or grip fighting. More recently when we play this position we do so almost exclusively with the right foot planted on the mat for base, and only post on the thigh during a moment of disruption of either posture, base or structure against our partner. You can also use the delariva tomoe nage sweep to create a reaction backwards or a posting of the left hand. Hope that helps.

Yes professor, that´s what I´m refering to. So do you mean I would unbalance him with my sit up guard, breaking his posture, and then put my foot on the ground to shoot the deep hook? Can I attempt the tomoe nage sweep using the lapel and not the sleeves? (and then go for this sweep)?

You would not put your foot on the ground to go for the deep hook, you would play your DLR guard with the foot on the ground, using it for base to help you pull on the collar for imbalancing and then step on the thigh very quickly for the deep hook insertion. If you check out the nogi dlr seminar we have posted on this channel, it shows this sweep as well, that may help you. All the best, Rob

Rob, do you have any suggestions on additional info for the engagement phase? I already own the BJJ guard formula and have found it very valuable.

Have you watched the NoGi Delariva seminar on our channel? There is some stuff in there you might find useful. Also, MGinaction has some excellent material on handfighting from the seated butterfly guard. We hope to have more material out next year that will also address the engagement phase. Thanks so much for the support!

I will look all of that stuff over. Thanks for the help!
