Ladies, keep your purses cross body / in front. If it's behind you, someone could take a razor blade to the bottom and your stuff's gone before you even realize what happened. Money belts, either the kind that go around your waist or hang from your neck (under clothes) are good ideas. For ATM's, check with your bank before you travel, some banks have relationships with banks in Mexico, so you won't be charged fee for withdrawing. Or, if you have a ballpark of how much you will spend in pesos before you leave, you can order pesos from your bank to take down in cash. Just make sure the hotel you are staying at has a safe in the room and obviously don't take it all out around with you. Thanks for the tips!

Gringo Pricing is very common in Mexico. A tourist is charged a much higher price. A case happened in a Taxi when s tourist was charged $150.00 for a trip normally costing $30.00.

Dude, I grew up with a mother who insisted on sterling silver. REAL SILVER TARNISHES, fake silver does not. You're thinking of gold. Real gold does not tarnish, fake gold does.

I fell victim to that in PV, at the Marina. I never even thought of exploiting children. Now I’m feeling bad that I contributed to that, but also that I bought a key chain, I’ll never use, didn’t need and paid too much for.

Not a fair commentary on Alpaca silver. If you know anything about jewelry , when you hear alpaca silver , you know there is no silver in it. That does not mean that it is junk. No one is ripping you off. This is made in a small area of mexico and is highly prized in many western states and other countries. This is a national art and treasure. I resell jewelry, mostly vintage. But I get as much for Alpaca as I do sterling or .925 silver. These pieces usually sell before the silver does. Silver does tarnish , btw. Normally it is coated or there are ways to make it so that it doesn't . Silver probably will tarnish faster if exposed to moisture and kept improperly. Alpaca silver is fine. It has value and is desirable by those that know more about jewelry. Other countries are making it, or buying the metal to create jewelry pieces. It is the art and the look you are shopping for. Don't worry if it is good enough to melt down and cash in. You are not going to do that anyway. Silver scrapping brings very little cash. Buy what you like. Hang on to the Alpaca. You will probably get a bit of cash for sure if you sell it down the road. Stop trashing what you don't know. When you hear Alpaca silver, it is a unique product of a small place in Mexico and is silver in color. Easy enough. Buy it. A souvenir you can enjoy and pass down in the family. If you find there is a maker's mark on the back or inside a band, go ahead and pay more if needed. That really will become more valuable. If it is stamped Alpaca or Silver, that is a bonus as well. I don't know about buying from a beach vendor. Sometimes Chinese products and counterfeit products sign jewelry but the best way to find out is look for the details. The good stuff pays attention to detail and you won't see errors or short cuts. Counterfeit will have something a bit off. Less detail. Big mistakes. Barely any stones or chips. Coloring outside the lines. They don't want to do the details as it cuts into the profits. If it looks like that, it is junk.

Island Hopper's right about everything: cash is KING in Mex, but can't be gullible, naive travelers/tourists ANYWHERE in the world, even within your OWN borders! Alcohol? Drugs? Petty theft from "taxi drivers" due to just plain carelessness? Also, tourists don't get KILLED in Mexico. Cartels only seek RIVAL drug traffickers, so you're not a target unless you like risking life & limb for them. But even hotels/restaurants scam you if not careful, so a lil' COMMON SENSE please! And Mex street food is WORLD FAMOUS for its price & quality anyway. (Oh, and Mexico doesn't do CREDIT very well either. Even RICH Mexicans don't trust banks, whether Mex., foreign, multinational, etc.)

Ya, years ago in Coasta Rico they had that ATM scam. You could go into the bank to avoid the fees. But you walk into the bank and it's like the DMV, Haha. Take a number, take a seat. Good thing I had nothin better to do that day.

Real silver does tarnish, that's actually one of its characteristics. This is why you need a specialized jewelry cleaner for silver.
@dayinthelifeofmycat2 жыл бұрын
You won't find 100% pure silver in any jewelry item due to the softness of the metal. 100% silver does not tarnish, however no jewelry item is made from 100% silver. So the only way to really find out for sure is to use a magnet to test!. If the magnet is drawn to your item, then it is not 925 silver, but instead alpaca (aka nickel silver).

Great info as always and these good tips apply to all travel. Substitute Europe for Mexico and still applies. Another reason to not use your debit card is scammers will clean out your account before you know it. You can likely get it all back, but what a hassle. I always video rental cars, both at pick up and drop off, even in the states. Nothing of value in your pants back pockets and be wary in crowds.

I hope you did get to travel to Mexico City! Don't be alarmed, just be aware. Just like you would be when traveling anywhere in the world. I've lived in Mexico for 16 yrs, going to Mexico City for the first time this December 2022, using my common sense and what others suggest. Too many good things there, I dont want to miss out.
@mindyjoslin72793 жыл бұрын
I would never go to Mexico because I wouldn't trust anyone, I would spend the whole time worrying about everything. If I ever did I would never leave the resort. When we do travel I go for the resort only.

I think its safe but it is a matter of getting comfortable.

Aww, you miss out on many opportunities to enjoy a culture by staying on your resort. I suggest studying and reading a lot before you go, and renting a car, and learning some of the language and immersing yourself in experiences where locals go. It’s nice to do tourist activities too, but you’re just around other Americans, so what’s the point of traveling if you only want to hang out with people who look and sound like you?
@dylsesh34113 жыл бұрын
That’s a very sheltered mindset. You can be scammed anywhere. If you spend your life worrying you’ll never truly enjoy yourself.

You did not get fucked. You don't know squat about jewelry. No one ever said Alpaca silver is real silver except for the uneducated that don't look things up. Read my comment. If your piece looks really cool, you made a great purchase. Read my other comment and don't be an uninformed American. You had a cell phone and could have looked it up.
