I grew up hearing Island's artists like Roxy Music, Sparks, Bob Marley, Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, Cat Stevens, King Crimson, U2, Free, Linton Kwensi Johnson, Grace Jones, Lee Perry and many others. Island was the most important label of the History of popular music.

Steve Winwood was the cornerstone of Island Records. Blackwell stated so in his Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame speech. All the other talent wanted to be with Island, because Steve was there. Chris is a visionary Genius.....

Knowing what legacy island records has to this day, I wanted to get an in depth look at it's rise to fame and inspired such diversity across so many genres of music culture. This BBC documentary covers all those crossovers which prove panicle turning points in music history giving the viewer a feel good factor especially one who was buying into what was seen at the time ground breaking and alternative.

Does anyone remember a documentary celebrating 25 years of Island called Island Life and presented by Grace Jones? I'd love to see that again, mainly for the live clip of Grace herself intoning the word 'Leatherette' over a funky dance beat. Me and my mate must have worn out the tape repeatedly rewinding that bit while pissing ourselves laughing.

You’d seek out a new Island release back then because you knew it would be worth hearing. Island maintained very high standards. Their budget-priced 1969 sampler Nice Enough to Eat introduced me to a world of great music, and I ran out and bought the first two Free albums and Five Leaves Left upon hearing it.

Full agreement regarding her talent. I'm afraid her issues were likely beyond what any record label or member of the 'inner circle' would be equipped to handle.

Amazing documentary. But the problem is that Chris Blackwell was racist to Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Shame that wasn't covered.

Racist? I guess that's why he promoted not only Bob Marley & the Wailers, but also a whole bunch of other, mostly very black-conscious Afro-Caribbean artists (including launching Bunny Wailer's own solo career, by the way): typically the kind of thing a racist would do, indeed... 🙄
