Since its invention over 100 years ago, the vinyl record has revolutionized the way people hear and feel recorded music. In the 1980s, video killed the radio star and CDs killed the record industry. Now-with CD and digital sales on the decline-vinyl records is in the midst of an epic comeback.
A collector of records since childhood, Alex Rodriguez has turned his addiction into a career. Follow Alex across America as he discovers and curates records for Coachella Music Festival’s on-site record store. Dig into the world of record collecting, as Alex spends weeks on the road, buying records and swapping stories with fellow collectors, musicians, and producers.
Featuring interviews with Pete Rock, Lenny Kaye, Monalisa Murray, Oliver Wang, Valerie Calano, “Slug” and “Ant” from Atmosphere, Sheila Burgel, Steven Blush, Rebecca Birmingham, Jamison Harvey “DJ Prestige”, and Kevin Patrick. Record Safari gives viewers an intimate inside look into the world of record collecting through some of the industry’s most knowledgeable enthusiasts. Is it just a hobby or something deeper and more meaningful? What explains vinyl records' steady popularity in the age of streaming?
The film explores the many reasons why people become vinyl enthusiasts and hopes to show viewers why the format has been and remains a powerful medium for music. Is it just a hobby or something deeper? What explains vinyl records steady popularity in the age of streaming? Tag along for the journey as Alex answers these questions and searches high and low for these sought-after pieces of plastic.

@@recordsafari3541 Thanks for the surprising insight. The fact that he is married (and has kids) is quite a twist. Oh, and the fact remains that he played a rare Nirvana record ON A FREAKING CROSLEY with its glorious ceramic cartridge and outrageous tracking force. That last scene gives goosebumps. Here’s a woman who thought she was done with music and most would never hear her music again. And here we are 60 years later she means so much to one man, who really knows music by the way, and all of us who are listening through this film. It was a beautiful song. I’d like to thank her.

I have been a huge fan of vinyl my entire life. My youngest memories include my father introducing me to his favorite albums, many of which I still have today. I have spent countless hours searching through bins for that hidden gem. Family obligations and space considerations threw me off track for years, but I'm getting back in. I'm settling on a good reliable cleaning process for my older albums, getting a new turntable and this doc helped light a fire under me. Your cross country expedition reminded me of my love for analog music and the addiction I first felt as a kid.

Same here. One time I was dating this girl and wanted to impress her and I met one of her girlfriends who told me she was teaching herself blues harmonica because she wanted to form a blues band. So I let her borrow about 80 of my best blues albums. Never saw that girl or my records again. This was around 1978 or so. Broke up with the girl I was dating and she just said 'you shouldn't loan people stuff.'

The last scene was fantastic and I appreciate his choice of his most treasured record. The most heartbreaking story for me was the gentleman that was diagnosed with terminal cancer selling his entire collection and didn’t want to burden his kids with them after he leaves this world. In the 1960's it wasn't unusual to see someone carrying several albums under their arm as they went to visit a friend. With only 4 TV channels, playing records was the main form of entertainment at the time. Plus, music was culturally very important back then. Buying new records, taking them home, gathering with friends to listen to them, reading the liner notes and looking at the pictures was almost ritualistic. I wish that I held on to all of the first pressings that I bought but I've been collecting them again and now I can finally afford a decent system to play them on now. I got my first transistor radio when I was 11 (1961), I used to listen to it in my bed every night. With 99% accuracy, I could pick out when a song was going to be a #1 hit. One night I heard the Ferrante & Teicher recording of the theme from the movie Exodus, I was enamored with their piano playing and the music had an emotional impact on me. I was into rock & roll but I asked my parents to buy the album for me. Instead of the Ferrante & Teicher version they bought, Mantovani Plays Music From Exodus And Other Great Themes. It wasn't what I wanted but the album had some nice music on it. That was my first album. The first single that I bought was the same year, this time I bought it myself. I wanted to get Dion's Runaround Sue but the store didn't have it in stock, so I bought Take Good Care of My Baby by Bobby Vee. Every time my parents went out I'd blast that record through my fathers Grundig Majestic console stereo. The neighbors must have loved me, LOL! I'm glad vinyl is having a resurgence, I hope that when the young people today get old, they have as many fond memories as I do, of the albums they bought in their youth.

What a great documentary. I like the guy who said his Mum asked why he was playing that drug music? When he was listening to Revolver. Made me laugh out loud when he said it was her record he was listening to!

Fantastic docu. Seemingly much less pompous and snobbish than the UK scene.

Definitely enjoyed this. In the opening, Alex plays a record while introducing himself and I recognized the song. At the end of the movie he plays the song again and shares it's history and significance to him. I know that song as "Strawberries" sung by Jerry Butler released on 45 on the Vee Jay label in 1963 which I bought around that time and to this day it is still one of my favorite records. The vinyl culture indeed connects people.

Cratedigging in Italy is being killed by speculation and ridiculously inflated prices. It's either finding crappy stuff for a couple of bucks or, decent used records at higher prices than their newly repressed versions. It's frankly frustrating.

Yes speculation has turned the online gemm and ebay sellers to ask outrageous prices. Collections have dried up. Record collecting is in a downturn and sell off by small collectors at retail prices.
