Fantastic - many thanks. I live on the Island - in Cowes. I was ten at the time and remember so well seeing the hand painted 'hippy' tents when we dropped my older brother off at the festival. We could hear the distant sound of the music from our home, 14 miles away - that is no exaggeration.

Asking a question to an 8 year old comment. At 3:00 minutes there are people sitting on a Tumuli, is that where the golf course at Freshwater is now?

Imagine this: 700000 people gathered together in one place to enjoy the same music - without any kind of internet, smartphones, whatsapp, GPS systems, or google maps! Not even MTV... With our dependency on those technologies in 2017 seeing these images from 1970 seems so much like pure freedom! No phonecall, sms, whatsapp message, facebook post, new youtube video, "urgend need" of posting the newest smartphone picture of the concert on twitter, or what ever could distract you from the moment, from fully enjoy what you actually came all this way for: The music of your favourite bands! Despite all the difficulties and problems of that time, it makes you wonder how much of these new technologies of today you really, what for exacly, and if you shouldn't turn those things of once in while to fully experience special moments.

I never realised until recently that so much film of the event existed on KZbin. I'm now watching loads of them, especially the crowd scenes, just on the off-chance I might see my young self. I'm appalled at just how little of the whole weekend I remember. That may not all be down to my age, though :)

This video helped me with context about a very cool gathering thats always intriguing. Nice counterweight to Woodstock then the heaviness of Altamont. Lucky to have been there

That's not uncommon Rob, I remember the first few hours or less and the rest is a total blur, dense fumes of Jamaican woodbines possibly 🙂

Very cool, both the excellent footage that provides good context to those not there but long intrigued by this special gathering, and the soundtrack! Captures an era as a cultural counterweight to Woodstock and the residue left by Altamont

The Who’s PA system was used, not Pink Floyd’s. Look at Hendrix, Joni, and all the other band footage and you will clearly see either “WHO” or “THE WHO” stenciled/spray painted all over the stage equipment. If that doesn’t convince you just listen to Pete Townshend’s short speech at the start of The Who’s set; “...same bands.., using our PA system.., same as last year...” The Who were forerunners in top notch LOUD PA systems. They were tired of depending on and then being let down by poor sound systems (such as at Woodstock). Short version is they commissioned their own state of the art PA and took it on the road, and when they weren’t using it, they would rent it out to bands/tours/festivals, it was that good. The Who were pioneers in the field. Get it right, credit where deserved.

I am visiting the Isle of Wight next weekend (June, 2022), so got interested in the original Isle of Wight festivals, around 1970. (I was born in 1967). This is an excellent little documentary, the archive film is amazing. I never realised that up to 700,000 attended the original festival. In comparison, Glastonbury is but an upstart imitation ... 👍

Thanks for sharing. I remember the Hill for those who believed music should be free. The double fence around the perimeter with the guard dogs in. The wind was in the wrong direction so PA was too quiet so they brought in the biggest PA in the country 5000 watts, I think it was The Who's. WEM speakers. Locals left us trays of water outside their houses. The ferry's coming over rammed with weekend hippies and cars
