6.32 Had a Saturday job for about 10 years in the Curtain and Drapery shop. Established in 1870 and still in the same family in 1970. It hadn’t changed much inside since the days of Queen Victoria and a sold a great variety of things you never hear of any more - scrim, gimp, buckram, millpuff, kapok - to name but a few. They still made feather beds too, which I had to make and then deliver by taxi. And until the mid 1960’s it had a WW1 vintage phone, with separate ear piece and speaker. Also they were one of the few places in the country back then making roller blinds and selling the spring rollers. Notorious for pre-decimal prices like ‘four and eleven pence halfpenny’ and before that ‘six and eleven pence three farthings’.
