Interesting! I think my HCl is more concentrated than I thought. I wasn't even done with additions when the product began decomposing rapidly. Thankfully my setup was a closed system that bubbled all gases through a NaOH scrubber because a lot of NO2 was produced. I tried again and didn't add all the acid alcohol mix and was successfull. Really weird but cool.

@@vibzzlab yup I did and the second attempt was actually cooled less than the first and I got far better yield due to the lack of high excess of HCl.

@@vibzzlab That's a good point I was using around 30% hardware store HCl. I never bothered titrating since I didn't realize this could happen.

@@vibzzlab Possibly. I'm pretty convinced it was too much acid. I never titrated and isopropyl nitrite decomposes in very acidic conditions so it adds up. It could be additives but that doesn't really explain why my second try worked well. The decomposition was negligible/not even noticeable if any, abd them towards the end there would be a sudden decomposition. In the second try I brought it right up to that point and right away quenched it with baking soda solution and it stopped. I wish I would've checked the pH for both runs haha.

@@Andrew-my1cp One pentyl nitrite is far better than isopropyl nitrite. BUT you need to forget all the prep mentioned online EXCEPT for H. Blitz. He wrote a formula that actually works to get a good potent amyl nitrite that doesn't degrade. Problem is...you need a great excess of both acid and SN. Blitz added the dry SN in portions to the sulfuric acid/alcohol. It works very well. Lots of smoke and bubbles....but it clearly works. Forces the reaction to consume ALL the alcohol. Best amyl I've ever made.

@@Andrew-my1cp I am getting successful results by using a 3 to 4 ratio of 91% IPA to 31.45% HCl. I add the acid to the alcohol. cool, but do NOT freeze. It's important to not perform at subzero temps. You will get low toxic yield. I use an ice bath, but I do not freeze my reagents. Outdoor temps of 35 to 40F seem good. Yield must be stirred in cold water....then brine/soda

Anhydrous magnesium sulphate can also be used to remove water from the product. This can be made easily by heating Epsom Salts until all the water is removed.

@@BaddaBigBoom The salt won't interfere with the reaction except affecting yield . All you need to do is get a metal bucket outside, fill it up with enough acidified isopropyl to dissolve your nitrite salt then add the salt in parts to control temp (smaller bucket in large bucket of ice water helps). Your alkyl nitrite will form a layer on top. It's not a delicate reaction.
