That you actually managed to do anything with the focus is impressive. It almost felt like there was an odd couple, buddy cop movie with Romania and Hungary against the world. Hungary's democratic-monarchist (but increasingly fascist secret), Romania is a constitutional monarchy (that flips fascist), they both claim Transylvania, can they get along and defeat Communism and fascism?

I have a confession. My first successful playthrough of HOI4 was Democratic Hungary. At this point, I knew the basics on planning an attack, training units, research, etc. But I didn't know stuff like, say, how to edit division templates. So, that's the skill level we're dealing with here. I basically sat there for most of the game going through the focuses to build up my forces, but wasn't actually building those forces all that much due to not being able to increase my conscription law beyond Limited Conscription and the fact that I was spending too much time building infrastructure and upgrading my radar stations and anti-air instead of, you know, factories. Then, at one point, as Germany was deep into Barbarossa, and I was a small Democratic island in a sea of fascism, I noticed that there did not appear to be any troops on my border. So I did the Join Allies focus and got pulled into the war. By the end of the month, the mighty Hungarian army, which was maybe 24 divisions at that point marching under the cover of a few thousand airplanes, was walking into Berlin almost completely unopposed. Soon after, they linked up with the British, turned south, and slowly ground the Italians into the dirt. I stopped playing it soon after that since I had basically no clue how to do the peace conferences, and so the whole save got screwed up after that.

My first successful game was as fascist poland but I did the Miedzymorze. This was WAY before NSB. I built a fort wall with Germany but they broke it down like the Kool Aid man. I tried holding but eventually they took Warsaw. I gave up but i wanted to go down fighting. Eventually i managed to encircle a large amount of germans north of warsaw. I killed them. Then i started slowly retaking polish cities for manpower, starting with Warsaw and ending with the wall. I then single handedly killed Germany and after that we all clowned Italy. I annexed Germany, including Czechoslovakia and Austria. Romania and Hungary had the fascist influence but never joined the axis, so i Coopted them into my faction. This included bulgaria which romania had conquered. I spent a few years building up for war with the soviets, during which time the soviets allied china and conquered Japan, Siam and most of the middle east. In 1943 I declared war and fought literally hundreds of divisions until i eventually beat Russia and China. In the peace deal. In the peace deal I annexed all of European russia, Siam, Iraq and some Japanese islands, Romania annexed turkey, and I restored the Qing and Japanese empires. Russia, which is now siberia became a democracy because of the allies. They then declared war on Japan. I managed to take over most of france, but the allies took over most of germany and i didnt have anyone to stop them invading poland itself, so i quit.

My first games were unsucessfull. First, i played non hist ai focus chezcoslovakia because of their simple focus tree, but i got screwed by germans and then i was soending my precious time in france, seeing hiw we are screwed cause all of czhech entente is only france now, and fascist britain invades us and germans go through maginot shortly after. My 2nd was non hist ai \france of pierre laval. I did pretty well until.. until /historicallyaccurate happened. Kinda. I held the germans, but because me, stupid ass, who didnt wanted to cancel guarantees on balkans, i completed focus to strenght little entente Even THOUGH AFTER THAT HUNGARY - AUSTRIA ATE CHZECOSLOVAKIA. So i were basically dead. And shortly after i didnt needed to even do anything with guarantees cuz balkan friends were ded. So im lost to italians because they somehow pierced my level 5 forts in south. Then i were as USA but after panay incident and attack on japan everything ended in stalemate so i got bored and played as swiss. When i joined allies and went to attack italy, i suceed, but germans took 1 province and i surrendered.... There were also bad run with germany, 4 games as china, 1 as communist china, 1 as long yun, and 2 as nationalists. Twice trotsky revolution, failure as romania, just hungary, few poles..Maybe some other stuff Then i were sucess. Sucessfull usa, sucessfull democratic japan, and sucessfull sovirt

I don’t exactly remember my first successful run, but my first run was playing as Brazil (for some reason) I didn’t know that it didn’t have a focus tree because it was the first country I played, it was rather boring and I decided to go fascist. Despite my best efforts (which were just doing nothing the entire game except knocking out the Guyanas, not even aiding Germany) I ended up being naval invaded by…. Not the U.S., not Britain, but the USSR somehow and got puppeted by them in the peace deal.

In CK3, Somalia isn’t half bad. You can rather easily form the Empire of Ajuraan (fun fact: the smallest empire in the game) and if you (convert to/start as) the local Pagan Faith of Waaqism, all 5 of its holy sites are close together in the same general area. Plus, the Empire of Ajuraan’s de jure capital, Mogadishu, is a Holy Site for Waaqism. The only real immediate threats in the region would be Muslim states in Adal and the Kingdom of Abyssinia (this doesn’t include the scenario if someone from the northern Red Sea decides to make your life worse). Really, you can easily get into a good enough position to form the Empire of Africa. TLDR: I can confirm Somalia is viable, at least in CK3. PS: Simotaniously controlling the Kingdoms of Ajuraan, Outer Ajuraan, Adal, Damot, and Abyssinia creates a very nice border

I feel like with the latest patches/dlc, paradox has reverted back to old hoi4 bugs, seems like the ai frequently takes their entire or majority of their army off the frontlines, especially when there are multiple fronts for them to control

I did the democratic king focus when I found a hungary democratic leader portrait in the workshop. The portrait was of Horthy's son, who was fairly pro-democracy and against anti-semitism. He died on the Eastern front as a military pilot. Horthy's grandson is actually still alive and converted to islam. I dont remember what happened in the playthrough though.

The reason you can call in Sweden when you elect Wilhelm is because Wilhelm was a Swedish duke in real life, and in this game when you elect a democratic king, you literally just invite this Swedish dude to become the king. But he’s a still a Swedish duke and has considerable sway in Swedish politics I guess so he can call them for support if need be. It’s a random unofficial ally you get if you go this path.

I played democratic hungary relatively recently. It also happened to be the game I discovered the German AI would not invade the USSR if it was at war with hungary and they hadn't capitulated. I eventually capitulated in 1944 and the Germans still hadn't Barbarossa'd.

I've done democratic Hungary once. I've modded the game to be able to form Austria-Hungary once taking all of the lands required by the decision that is only available to Austria and Czechoslovakia. I've taken the join the Allies path for the extra lore points and from then on out it was basically the same defensive gameplay as Czechoslovakia till the allies were able to D-day.
