It’s possible that the parents are the boy’s legal guardians and that Grandma called the police, who then would have contacted CPS, who then made contact with the parents (as required by law). That prompted the parents to “intervene” and take their son back to Indiana. It might have taken this long to issue a Silver Alert because they needed to investigate first. It doesn’t appear that the police are taking this case lightly, but unfortunately they have to use policies and procedures.

His mom picked him up from Grandma's house. Within minutes (the news does specify how many) video shows him NOT in the vehicle with is mom. To me, this sounds like he didn't make it to the property or was put in the trunk very soon after being picked up.
