Hiwa Joe *facepalm! the Philistines are extinct ya tard!!! and they weren't even middle eastern! they came from fucking Crete! and they invaded the ancient kingdoms of Israel, and Egypt, and the land that they occupied in Israel was a tiny strip along the coast from Gazza to Ashqelon. PS: Philistines is not even their real name, it was the name given to them by the Israelites (the ancient Egyptians called "sea people") there Hebrew name "Plishteim" comes from the Hebrew word "Palash" which means INVADERS.

Benamon9 Given that most Jews are descendants of europeans and asians there is a pretty good argument that none of them came from "Palestine". 2000 years is a long time. Apparently man began in Africa, does that mean I get to go back and claim a bit of it? What is the statute of limitations on nationhood?

Hergle McMergle DNA shows that European Jews originate from the Middle East, and north Africa, and 98% of them are from the Levant. and its not "most Jews" either. over 55% of Israeli Jews are directly from other parts of the middle east. and many people do not know this, but the Palestinians also have a European minority among themselves. in some cases, you can tell by the last name.

Yes, it wasn't an empire - just a region name. Not every country in the world originates from it's own empire. There was no Canadian or Indian empire. Just recognized regions that eventually consolidated and had borders set to designate land masses/countries. And I guess I spelled it wrong too...might be phislistin or something like that.

***** Oh, and the reason you can't see any Palestinian state in this video is because there was none, as well as there was no Jordan or Iraq or Syria..etc. These were regions mostly part of Arab empires, and sometimes other empires. If the map was detailed you'd see Palestine being part of the Syria/Levant region. Palestine is NOT a muslim land, religion has nothing with this. Palestine is an ARAB land, as the first settlers there were Arab Kan'ans who came from modern Yemen, and who were fought off by Jews arriving from Egypt, who shortly established the kingdom if Israel there.

***** I'm interested in the Israeli Jews' claim to Israel. I hear your connection to the land of Egypt is quite strong but here's the question. You think that the remaining "Egyptians" whose culture and Genes originated in Ancient Egypt deserve to return and establish a purely Egyptian(not Arab) state in the land. But this right and patriotism is it based more on Genes or Culture? If your ancestors had lived there but your family had lost the culture, the words, the traditions of Ancient Egypt: would you feel patriotic to Egypt? If your ancestors had lived there but had been exiled, moved to Europe, interbred, lost genes, had interbred people marrying people without and Jewish genes, but the households for years and years had kept the traditions, language, stories from that land: would you feel patriotic to Egypt? And which do you feel would make you feel more patriotic?

It's a map of political entities, and Canaan is a term for a region. You do have a good point, the animation seems to show the Kingdom of Israel conquering Canaan from the Egyptians, which is not what scholars currently believe happened. A more accurate description would show the Assyrian Empire being an entity in that region earlier, some Philistine disruptions in the coastal area, Egypt receding, and the Israelites coming to their own in the vacuum left by the Late Bronze Age collapse.

The truth is omar, is that you are arab and noting more. Israelites and jews came from some Canaanite people, others canaanite just disappeared. Hebrew names like Shahar, Anat, yam are names of canaanite gods. Yam for example is the god of sea, sea in hebrew is "yam".

people saying israel was a kingdom long before palestine as if its some kind of argument. that doesnt mean anything. france was a country long before switzerland, does that mean switzerland shouldnt exist? no, they live peacefully as neighbors. so should israel and palestine. israel should realize they dont have a right to palestinian lands, and palestine should realize they can get their lands back. most of israeli citizens are 2nd wave immigrants at most, and are not descendants of those who lived in israel 3000 years ago, palestinians however lived there for generations.

Todd Downing correction on Rivkin's point. Canaan did exist and in the bible canaanites are mentioned, however they disappeared off the face of the earth. Palestinians today aren't their descendants. The ancestors of Palestinians today moved to the land of Israel after the Israelites were evicted by the Romans. They then built the dome of the rock on top of the ancient Jewish temple's ruins. And the conquering Ottoman empire built in the land to commemorate some miracle that they invented within the last 1500 years and crapped on the holy temple. This expansion of the warmongering ottoman empire constituted "Palestinians" and provided them with a "civilization" to call their own. But even so much is contested by both sides of the debate.

Jimmy Nutron That is like saying Quebec is Quebec. Ancient Macedonia was Greek, the inhabitants worshipped Greek Gods and had Greek names and viewed themselves as Greek. Alexander the Great stated that it was his duty to spread Greek culture. As for Byzantium, in the 11th Century, the Latins were calling Byzantines Greeks. The last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI Paleologos, had said " Ἕλληνες εσμέν " ("We are Greeks"). Most historians agree that after the accession to the Byzantine throne of Heraclius in 610 A.D., the Byzantine Empire became essentially Greek in both culture and spirit. Heraclius made Greek the official language of the Empire, and it had already become the most widely spoken language of the Byzantine population. The Byzantine Empire, having had its origins in the Eastern Roman Empire, now evolved into something new-something different from its predecessor. By 650 A.D., only a very few lingering Roman elements remained alongside the pervasive Greek influence. According to various historical sources, a large majority of the Byzantine population from 650 A.D. onwards was of Greek cultural background. Additionally, the Byzantine army fought in a style which was much closer to that of the Ancient Athenians and Spartans than that of the Roman Legions. And finally, "most historians of Byzantium agree that the Empire’s greatest and most lasting legacy was the birth of Greek Orthodox Christianity. Eastern Orthodoxy arose as a distinct branch of Christianity after the “Great Schism” of the eleventh century between Eastern and Western Christendom". ***** they might be of greek culture but macedonians definetly had a different nation. its like ukranians and russians, they have the same culture but different historical nations. Byzantium was formed as the "Eastern Roman Empire" and like you said they might have changed to greek culture, they started off as romans which means it was the romans who expanded the empire. and for some reason the empire went into decline after it converted to greek culture.

Jimmy Nutron Do not apply the same concept of 'nation' in today's world to the times of ancient Hellas. If the Macedonians viewed themselves as Greek, then who are you to say otherwise. As for the Byzantine Empire, they viewed themselves as Greek too. Quotes and historical evidence provided before. No need to go over the same points.

My curiosity of history and maps piqued my interest here. I appreciate the balanced review of historical empires. I'd recommend starting the animation by illustrating where the region of Palestine was historically located. Later, you do get into the West Bank and Gaza until the 1970's, but forgo on mentioning the expansion of Israel since.

This only extends back 3000 years, if you go back further even more nations have claimed ownership of that area. So basically you have about 50 different peoples, empires, what-have-you at one time or another have laid claim to that area both before and after, all of them including Israelis were invaders. So why have the Israeli invaders been given the any preference? Why not the Assyrians, Persians, Selmuks and so on?

No there wasn't Daniel. The last Jewish king of Judah was exiled by the Babylonians. In later centuries there may have been brief quasi-autonomous periods for the Jewish elite but certainly there were no 'Jewish Kingdoms' in the region after Zedekiah, before, during or after the Greek and Roman periods. One final point: the idea that there was a large, continuous, independent and unified kingdom of Israel existed only for two generations according to the bible (David and Soloman) and probably didn't really exist at all on any meaningful scale according to modern archaeologists.

BlahBlahBlah8861 Daniel I believe he is referring to the Hasmonean kingdom, which gained independence after successfully revolting against the Seleucid Empire. Also, the primary ancient kingdom has always been the Judean one. It contained Jerusalem and the temple, and existed centuries longer than its neighbor to the north.

The conquering of the land was too show that Israel has powers and that Arabs should not mess with them. Since then, it has been fairly quite in terms of major full size scaled wars.

The video shows the Kingdoms and Empires that had historically ruled Palestine, it doesn't talk about the ownership. "The land of Palestine has been populated by the nation known as Palestinians since historical times. These people are known to have been religiously diverse always with Muslim as its majority, living peacefully with fellow Jews, Christians and Druze people. However, with the Zionist movement of 20th century, a large number of Jews immigrated to Palestine from many parts of the Europe which increased the Jewish population drastically, leading to conflicts between Arabs and Jews"

2. After the Arab conquests in the 7th century, the country was Arabized which made Moslem converts of the natives, settled down as residents, and intermarried with them, with the result that all are now so completely Arabized that we cannot tell where the Canaanites leave off and the Arabs begin. They are called Palestinian today, as they have been since Herodotus, through the Byzantine and Arab era up to today, as I have shown.

Recent archeological digs provide evidence that Jerusalem was a big and fortified city already in 1800 BCE. Findings show that the sophisticated water system heretofor attributed to the conquering Israelites pre-dated them by eight centuries and was even more sophisticated than imagined. Dr. Ronny Reich, who directed the excavation along with Eli Shuikrun, said the entire system was built as a single complex by Canaanites in the Bronze Period, around 1800 BCE., The Jewish Bulletin, July 1998

When the Hebrews first migrated to Canaan, in around 1800 B.C., Jerusalem was already a big and fortified city. From that time on, there were always Jews in the area, but for many centuries, the Jewish population was only about 3% of the total. Arabs, both Muslim and Christian were 97%.

The fact is that the land has been an Arab country more than anything else in history, and the people there referred to as Palestinians (or Filastins) for over 1000 years. In this era of Independence, it makes no difference that rule of the land has changed hands to different Empires throughout history.

They were never captive in Egypt. They were paid workers and mercenaries who worked at or guarded one of the pyramids as it was built. Once it was finished they moved on. They had an army of about 5000 men and they DID conquer Canaan. Also, they were allowed to leave Egypt initially, but Moses ordered the mercenaries to raid a market town for provisions for them in the desert. That's when they were chased by the Egyptian army. This has all been proven.

That is my understanding. By way of background info, before the region was called Palestine, it was named Canaan after a people there named Canaanites.
@Lestibournes
@Lestibournes 4 жыл бұрын
It was called Canaan after the Canaanites who colonized Semitic land. The Philistines, who were either Greek or Crete, colonized the Mediterranean coast. The name Philistine means invader. Israel, a Semitic nation, conquered Canaan. Israel was conquered and exiled by the Assyrian an Babylonian empires. It was re-established as Judea in a rebellion against the Greco-Syrian empire. It was annexed and colonized by Rome. After failed rebellions Rome annexed Judea to Syria and called to combined province Syria-Palestina. After the state of Israel was re-established the Arabs who resided in Israel started calling themselves Palestinians. Except that they can't pronounce it so they say Balastin.

According to history, the Ottomon's allowed Christians and Jews to live peacefully with Muslims. On Friday the Muslims prayed at the Dome of the Rock, on Sunday the Christians went to Church. The Jews were so afraid of the Christian crusaders they helped the Muslims defend Jerusalem during the crusades (and for good reason because the crusaders killed everyone including their own people).
