Today we visit the Service Rifle of Israel, the Tavor X95. In many ways a great bullpup and in many ways a bad firearm, there are many odd quirks to this rifle. We delve in depth into this firearm and we hope you enjoy the video.

I think the thing that people often don't appreciate about the Tavor - it was designed by IWI for use by the IDF. Full stop. So the engineers designed the rifle with very specific use scenarios and didn't care that in all these other scenarios it wouldn't be as ideal. In the West we tend to build our weapons as versatile as possible, with the maximum ability to modify uses; but the Tavors are the opposite. It is intended to be used by frontline IDF troops, entirely manufactured in Israel (as a result of previous Western arms embargos). I love my X95 and use it for a ton of things, but if I am carrying for a situation it isn't ideal I switch back over to something else that is. The Tavor is a work truck - meant for the job site, so don't expect leather and a heated seat.

Unlike the X95, the Tavor 7 has an adjustable gas block. And it's in .308. And you can get a 20" barrel kit for it (or leave it with the 16"). And you can lock the charging handle back by tilting it up slightly to do a bullpup HK slap. What I'm trying to get at here is do a video on the Tavor 7.

IWI really needs to update the X95 with the benefits of the 7. One of the biggest being able to swap the left hand eject without needs additional parts. Only real downside to the 7 is that it’s unreliable with harder primers.

I don't know why this video popped into my algorithm, but I'll leave a comment. I served 3 years with this rifle in a special ops unit (and still do in reserves) in the IDF and I've been trained by one of the first officers to receive this rifle and basically formed the fighting methodology with this rifle for the IDF. First of all, you're using it mostly right so that's good. But the major thing to understand with this rifle is that it was designed for the IDF infantry and how the ground forces operate in combat. There are several versions of the service Tavor( the x95 is the micro Tavor- the older brother is the Tavor), with a longer barrel for sharpshooters and grenade launchers. Yes, it is less accurate, but I've seen very long and great shots with this one. The IDF mostly fights in urban areas rather than open areas, so its more efficient to have a shorter rifle that is less accurate but is very reliable (and it is, it shoots even when its full of mud) that can "catch corners" easier and is very easy to use. And let's not forget, it's cheaper to make these than to buy M4s from the US.

I have an X95 .300 Blackout, and it does have an adjustable gas block for switching to suppressed & subsonic ammo. I agree w/ some of the other issues stated though, but Manticore Arms is a solid one stop shop for fairly inexpensive corrections. I put on the aluminum M-Lok guard, which runs right up to the muzzle device and free floats the barrel. I replaced the charging handle & rod with one that folds flat, and the safety switch and indicator w/ two full fledged ambi-safety switches that are low profile. Oh, and I replaced the port cover with one that's made of milled aluminum with a heavy duty gasket - no more Tavor face. Next steps are to replace the trigger group & bow w. the Geissele Super Sabra Trigger pack, and the Lightning Bow Trigger, as well as getting a Dead Air can for it. Bidenomic's has slowed down those last two acquisitions... oh - and the fact I accidentally dropped the rifle in a lake. tragic accident. made me cry.

@@soul8bounce NO Deen, that would be the conclusion of someone using a reductive argument would come to. It's already a great rifle, it just get's better with a little additional work. See - I'm not going to be crawling through sand and mud with it in a combat situation, so I can make different choices than the IDF, because I understand that you don't want a light trigger on a combat rifle lest it be accidentally discharged more easily, that the light weight polymer handguard is a better choice for most, and a charging handle that doesn't fold is more rugged and less prone to breakage. I'm sorry - but your take.. well it lacks intelligence. while were here, let's discuss AR platform modding... no one does that right? cause every AR works perfectly for every person and use case right out of the box? OH - and lets not forget the key point was - you can get an X95 thats made to be suppressed, his negatives were mostly built up around that, and it just came down to him having the wrong caliber. the .300 blackout version is the bees knees.

When he says the gun will be wrecked if I run a silencer does that mean the silencer will destroy the weapon or just make it too dirty?
@RamPuppy
@RamPuppy Жыл бұрын
@@davidlane07 I believe that hes talking about internal damage because there is no adjustable gas block on the one he had, meaning he would still have to fire supersonic rounds, which combined with a suppressor would cause significant overpressure. an adjustable gas block would allow for the firing of subsonic ammunition, allowing you to tune how much gas is is being used to cycle the action.
@TheFlyingZulu
@TheFlyingZulu Жыл бұрын
@@davidlane07 When they say a rifle is "overgassed" when running a suppressor or that it will "wreck the rifle", what they mean is that when you fire the gun there is extra gas in the system which thus causes the bolt to slam back harder. This happens because the suppressor is trapping the gas and less gas is being expelled out of the front. The gas is instead running back through the gas system and/or the chamber and out of the back (called gas blowback). The 'slamming of the bolt back harder' increases wear and tear on the internals of the rifle. The silencer won't "destroy" the weapon per say... it'll just make it wear out faster. It also makes it dirty but that really doesn't hurt the weapon, as long as you clean and lube it after every use. A lot of people say you don't need to do that and that you only need to clean modern weapons every 1000 rounds. I say bullshit because the lube helps the internal metal on metal moving parts last longer.

I'm a recently retired DEA agent and used an approved 16" LWRCI AR at work for search warrants and other enforcement operations. Can't tell you how much easier, smoother, and more ergonomic I found the Tavor for building clearing and was so frustrated it was a weapon I couldn't use at work. So much easier to smoothly pivot through a house's doorways and corners with that short bullpup instead of a full length AR. I think those constricted urban spaces and buildings are where you really start to appreciate the advantages of bullpups and are more forgiving of their weaknesses. Great review! Thanks for finally doing the Tavor!

It’s a compromised system but one important aspect for some of us is that it is compliant with mass laws while remaining short overall, using ar mags, having a pistol grip (gauntlet), and being as close to an sbr style weapon system as is possible within the draconian state laws. It’s definitely quirky in some ways but I’ve grown quite fond of it over the years, heavy but well balanced, it runs reliably and it is a unique conversation piece at the range. If it weren’t for laws, I’d trade it and a not inconsiderable amount of money for a gq paladin carbon in 8.6 in a heartbeat.

An interesting review, from the point of view of a civilian purchaser. This rifle was designed for the military and even the IDF didn't outfit all its units with it, to this day. The M4 and variations play a huge role, the reserve soldiers are mostly equipped with M16s of various shapes and forms, the reality is more complicated.

Never used the A1 (thank God - too young to have joined at that time). That was terrible and the A1's reputation is what has stuck with the L85 to the present day. A2 is/was much more reliable and has been used in armed conflicts and won plenty of engagements. It's a battle proven rifle. The issue is that from 2000 onwards, better rifles were available and could have been procured, which is why we could never understand why the L85 was held onto (bean counters digging their heels in i guess). Still, the British Army and Royal Marines have been fighting and winning battles with it and the deployments speak for themselves. The only other rifles I would trust are the X95/Tavor, C8 or an M4. I say that because these rifles are used in conflict and have seen a lot of active use over the last twenty years plus also. They are all battle proven. I can't say that for much else out there. SLR's (FAL's) and G3's would fall into the battle proven category also. Never used the A3 but I've seen a lot of the blokes compliment it some over the A2. I think the service life of the L85 ends in 2025 anyway and the A3 was just done to extend it up to that point until something new is procured.

Getting any version of the British L-85 is not going to happen. Due to Federal anti-gun legislation. The Federal Firearms Act of 1984 stopped the importation of most firearms. Unless there is a specific amount of US made parts. This is how various Kalashnikov rifles are imported into the US. So if someone in the UK can make a contract with one of the US manufacturers to finish the assembly for sale in the American market there can be a tremendous benefit. Importation of certain firearms is just prohibited by US Federal law. This is why Sig, H&K, Beretta and FN have factories in the US. A new rifle in the American market is the Croatian VHS bullpup rifle. HS Produkt of Croatia and Springfield Armory of the USA made contractual agreements. HS Produkt makes the VHS rifle with some modifications and Springfield Armory make certain parts to make the rifle legal. This is a tremendous opportunity for HS Produkt in that there were $1.7 million in sales to the USA in 2022 alone. The VHS rifle was renamed the Hellion for the American market. So whoever makes the L-85/SA-80, may just want to get themselves an opportunity like HS Produkt has done.

It made a huge difference. This trigger has a nice, crisp break and it brought the trigger pull weight down from ~ 12 lbs. to 4 lbs. measured on a Lyman trigger pull gauge. I have made no other changes to this rifle. I've been told that the 18" barrels were designed to be more accurate, for use as a DMR by the IDF before they switched to the X95. Great video and been waiting for the X95 from you. Living in the Burbs' this is my "GTH" rifle. For up close and personal to 300M the X95 is all I need. When installing my Geissele trigger pack and trigger bow I sealed the gas escape routs inside with Black high heat gasket sealer before I put it together. I had the barrel cut to 14.5 inches and pin and welded with a OSS Muzzle Break and added a OSS Free Flow can. Baffled cans are not recommended and there are other choices. Since, I never noticed any gas and this is the softest sweetest shooter. 2.25 MOA is the norm. For my Tavor it is more than adequate for defending anything around my domain. In my neighborhood the longest shot is well within 300M. Keep reaching out to IWI as I would like to see the T7 here as well as the new Carmel.

You can setup the Lightning Bow trigger to have zero take-up and make it a single stage trigger if you want. Due to the nature of being a bullpup you'll still get some very slight creep, but you'd never notice. It's definitely the best bang for your buck mod available for the X95.

For short people like me (5'0"), bullpups are great. My arm from armpit to wrist is only 19 inches long. Shooting an AR-15 is difficult even with a front grip because my arms are extended to their maximum, and I can't quite keep her steady. I bought a Tavor SAR instead. With the weight to the back of the weapon at my shoulder and the shorter overall length, I can hold it more steady and fire more rapidly with greater accuracy. For all those gun guys married to short wpmen, a bullpup might be the way to turn her into a gun gal! Seriously, I am more inclined to ask for a range day since acquiring my Tavor.

I feel like you’re critiquing one of my kids. My favorite kid. The X95 has its pros and cons just like any other platform. I knew going in that gas might be an issue which is why I have OSS cans that I can run on multiple platforms, not just the X95. The Flow 556k can was made for it! Great combo. Also drop a few bucks on the Manticore Arms ejection port seal and the gas problem becomes nonexistent. I also added the Manticore Optimus handguard which somehow improved the accuracy. I think because it adds more rigidity to the overall frame and essentially free floats the barrel. After thousands of rounds, I’ve never had a failure of any kind. If the SHTF, this would probably be the first rifle I’d grab. But that’s just me.

From my own testing, removing that little barrel ring depends on how much stuff you have on the polymer handguard rails. If you keep it slick, it doesn't make any noticeable difference. But if you have chonky lights hanging off it or use a vertical grip, you absolutely should remove it. It doesn't "improve" accuracy so much as it preserves accuracy against other factors. Also highly recommend the ShootingSight high energy recoil spring to help mitigate the overgassing and resulting recoil, and it does not impair reliability unsuppressed. If you're willing to shell out hundreds of dollars to replace a perfectly serviceable trigger, consider dropping 30 bucks on a spring first.

I think an updated version with an adjustable gas system on this would be a game changer. Being able to run this thing suppressed long term would be very useful for certain agencies and branches. Having a fairly compact cq package like this that is able to be suppressed would be very diverse in the field. The safety is kind of a stupid decision on the style, but as long as it functions correctly and reliable, that’s a small gripe. Overall, I think it’s a pretty cool looking weapon. Out of my price range currently though so I’ll stick to my ar15/10 builds for the time. Maybe one day though.

I recently acquired a Tavor 7 and it addressed some of the criticism you have with the X95. It has an adjustable gas block, comes with an ambidextrous fire selector, and the bolt release is no longer on the bottom near the mag well, but rather there's a notch on the charging handle where you lock the bolt and allows you to even give it a classic MP5 slap. I haven't shot it enough to determine gas yet nor have I tried long range, though I do know the system was purposely designed for urban combat which is one of the reasons why the Israelis moved to the Tavor from the M4. I find disassembly to be rather simple as well.

I have an x95 with the 18" barrel in 5.56. I love mine except for the trigger. Definitely going to be upgrading that. Probably going to do the manticore rail . They look pretty nice and come in 2 different heights. There grip looks pretty good to.

You should try the Tavor 7 in 762x51. It has a 4 way adjustable gas block, and it doesn’t have the rings around the barrel.

It also gets 3-5 moa and is very expensive which makes it pointless.

I have been using an older IWI Tavor SAR for nearly 10 years. Lot's of abuse. Not the best, but after you get used to it, it's pretty good. Love it for getting in & out of vehicles. AR-15 is better for distance. I have a few videos on my channel with it. Never found the need to move to the X95. I use mine supressed, but cut the barrel & pinned/welded the muzzle device. Still legal length barrel & OAL, but it reduced the gas in the system enough so it isn't crazy. Still slightly over gassed, but not as bad as everyone knows.

Love the channel. I'm stuck up here in Chinada and I picked up an x95 for a semi auto because it is non restricted and I can take it anywhere too train with where as anything remotely AR was limited to gun ranges and mandatory registration and now they are outright banned. this country sucks balls

Not banned yet. It is a bill that is still in progress and keeps getting delayed. I highly doubt it will pass because there is already very strong resistance even from local police stations.

Thanks for a very thorough review! I recently noticed the white deposits around the rear of the top rail, but I have never noticed gas in my face. My biggest reservation is what you showed in the ice test, where water can easily enter through those long charging handle slots to potentially freeze the trigger and mag release.

Not very realistic. I've used my Tavors in Canadian winters for almost 10 years with not so much as a hiccup.
@petesheppard1709
@petesheppard1709 Жыл бұрын
@@Impulset0 Yep! Even if you slip and fall into a body of water, you would immediately clear the weapon and work the action to get the water out before it froze. A more realistic test would be to carry a cold rifle indoors, let it get wet with condensation, then set it back outside, THAT is, AIUI, a not-uncommon oversight in colder climates.

Yep, my preferred weapon was the hard-to-find X95 xb16-blk in .300 blackout, but alas discovered the xb16-blk are discontinued production, so I went with my secondary a Honey Badger SD. About a grand more unfortunately.

The changed the handguard on mine there is some nice options, and I personally run the thin butt plate, making my 18" x95 same length as my ar15 10.5". They sell some stuff to mitigate the gassyness to your face and seal everything up better.

I prefer the Tavor21 (you guys call them the SAR21 in the US). The podium bipod is great. It's not compatible with the X95. I also prefer the mag release on the Tavor21 to the AR15 style mag release on the X95. If your mag release rod gets mucked up, it will be a pain during mag releases. The charging handle rod on mine snapped in 2 after about 500 rounds. Replaced it with the much better quality Manticore Arms charging handle and rod.
