I used to play the hell out of the Mario Bros arcade remake in Mario 3 All-Stars with my family. It's a lot like this game.

And there was also that "Mario vs Luigi" mode in New Super Mario Bros on the DS, which involved competing to collect 5 stars and knocking stars out of your opponent, very similar to this too.
