what if a disposable vape had explosives instead of juice. It already has a battery, switch, and heating element.
@markfergerson21452 ай бұрын
@@cloudstorm-sd1edThe heating element would have to be replaced with a blasting cap or equivalent. The battery in a vape is definitely capable of supplying enough current to set off a blasting cap. However, a blasting cap is typically much larger than the heating element in a vape, meaning it’s going to take up space that could have been occupied by explosive. Even in that case the device will almost certainly be lethal, especially if the explosive is in the form of a shaped charge. Think about it, but not too hard. By “equivalent” I mean a homemade detonator which can be smaller than a blasting cap, but that’s one of those things you SHOULD NOT TRY AT HOME. @@TheAnonymmynonaThe propellant in a gun is fully contained within the chamber and barrel, ie., there is no explosives-induced shockwave that travels from a gun (irrespective of size) to the operator's noggin (only out the muzzle). This would only happen if you had a catastrophic failure in the gun's containment, like what happened to Scott from Kentucky Ballistics. That aside, yes, the fact that we're talking _high_ explosives here makes things worse in terms of damage. High explosives are so because they have high _brisance,_ meaning that their detonation velocity is so high that they're _really_ good at tearing stuff apart. That also very much includes brain matter and other soft tissues. The skull itself will take the brunt of it, but the tissues behind will likely still get a very violent, intense pulse of getting "shaken", for lack of a better word. (Think how you could shake a pudding such that tears are created, or it falls apart.) I'd expect damage to the brain like a whiplash or other such trauma, but probably significantly worse.

This leads me to believe that battery life was impacted, which likely caused Hez to think of wiretaps, because who saw this coming lol? So my initial impression was that the XO was self-contained in the battery and potentially did use an exothermic reaction from the battery to detonate. I'm no expert, but that could even be the source of the time delay. We could be looking at a mere couple grams of XO in that situation. Any thoughts boys? Great work as always."

For those wondering about the archive footage, the dogs and the cat made it out of the house after the fire started (scared and confused), and the fire was fairly contained. They lost the mattress, probably got a bad scorch in the floor, and they'd be sanitizing for the resulting smoke damage (and all the water applied, as lithium fires are tough to put out), but it could have gone quite a lot worse. Batteries should definitely be respected, but they don't have the detonation speed of true explosives, and 'yield' is pretty dependent on size. Small ones really don't give much of a pop, it's more with the large kinds of rechargables as you see in laptops and electric mobility scooters where you see the potential for a more dangerous blast, if something went really wrong somehow.

I read a news report that the pager bombs had a small copper disc next to the explosive charge to act as a tiny EFP. If true, I think this makes sense from a terminal ballistics point of view. The projectile would create a larger temporary cavity in the flesh and drag more plastic and fragmentation into the wound. This would greatly increase bleeding and infection risk, as it is very difficult to find and remove plastic fragments from the body. I'm a bit skeptical that such a small explosive charge could create an effective EFP however.
@chemistryofquestionablequa62522 ай бұрын
EFPs can be tiny but I doubt the geometry of the pager would allow for one to be built properly. A disc next to the charge would act like a bullet and do more damage by penetration though.

If you take any of those examples shown in the video, and encapsulate it in something sealed, that isn't meant to rupture, you are going to get a serious bang. Afterall a pressure cooker isn't an explosive, but it can still be used as a bomb, as has been seen many times. Yes, shorting a battery won't make it explode, however it will trigger that rapid deflagration that we see in the examples, which in turn can cause an "explosion". Anyway, for this event it was PETN integrated into the rechargeable batteries inside of the pager.

Alphanumeric pagers like the "Alpha gold" you showed were not designed to be carried in the pockt. They came with a belt clips carrier case. The pager friction fit inside this case, the case was clipped to the belt. By the time this type of pager came out, Motorola had figured out that using the belt clip was a pain. It wasn't easily taken off the belt to read and was a major pain to re-clip back to the belt. (Damn I feel old know)

Someone please explain this to me. A lot of civilians got injured and killed by an explosive to reach a political and strategic goal. What is the definition of terrorism again?
@nikolaideianov50922 ай бұрын
If we take any civilian injures as terrorism them -every police force -every nation Is a terrorist The bombing of dresden was MUCH worse and i dont see anyone calling it terroristic The bombing of a city destroys its industry , which is strategic and may end a war sooner which is the political goal You cannot dumb it down that much and have something that makes sense (if you think about it for more then 5 seconds)

Thank you for going beyond a short and providing a full video. Whats interesting to me is how these were armed and detonated. Some say there was remotely triggered malware that heated up the battery to trigger the detonation. You said the small one was just 6grams of high explosive? is that the size of a mint or something?

From what I seen in a news report that interviewed, there were 2 batteries in that particular style of pager and therefore they were able to use one battery to keep the unit operating so as to not draw any suspicions to the users, and the other battery was replaced with an explosive
@andrewlangley95072 ай бұрын
From an electronics standpoint this would not be straightforward. It would be significantly easier to add explosives to the packaging. Depending on the design, batteries would occasionally need to be swapped out as well.
