Like, for example, if you said, "G-d, if you help me get this good job, I promise to give 10% of my income to charity" and then you get the job but you don't donate to charity, you've sinned. You're still obligated to honour contracts. The Gemara is absolutely stuffed full of law on honouring contracts and being ethical in business, which I can say because I have actually read parts of it, whereas I suspect you've never even seen one. And everybody sins. And nobody immerses on Yom Kippur, because we're forbidden to bathe or even wash our hands ritually except up to the second knuckle. I think he had 5 sons with Kutura and Abraham send them also away, same way he did to Ishmael. They became the Medians. Medians is the tribe Moses's wife came from. But yes the point is that semite races from Sem's line have allways been marrying and mixing with canaanites, and egyptians. But Y chromosone goes only from father to son. He called himself god, and he persuaded people that he was the messiah when clearly he was not as we are not living in the age of utopia as a redeemed people. According to Christians he fulfilled some but not all the prophecies, hence the supposed “second-coming”. The REAL messiah is to come, fulfill all the prophecies, and usher in a new era. Jesus also claimed that faith in him was the only way to reach “salvation”, and not the faithful observance of God’s commandments. I was a christian before. Paul attempted to do away with the commandments of God as well, (saying circumcision wasn’t necessary, sabbaths aren’t important, etc.) just shows how wrong it all is. For example while there are converts in Israel (generally spouses of authentic, born jews) the state was created for ETHNIC JEWS as a save haven from anti semitism (which is based on ETHNICITY). there is a misconception on what it means to be jewish these days. While ultra orthodox jews actually believe there is a god, etc... most Jews do not and simply adhere to the ethnic and cultural history of their family and country. Interesting, so I was born in Poland to a Jewish father (100% Jewish on both sides, grandmother and grandfather, but highly secular) who in his 20s converted to Catholicism to please the family of my Polish Catholic mother (as the family was very traditional). Now, this does not make me Jewish because it only counts from the mother's side, AND my father, who is technically Jewish, converted to Catholicism. I am nonetheless interested in Judaism and have visited Israel many times (in fact my dad had 3 sisters whose children ARE still Jewish according to Halakha and 1 lives in Israel, married to an Israeli and they have 5 kids - my cousins, oh and by the way I have permanent residence permit from Israel). However, I personally would be unlikely to convert because my mother's family have specifically emphasized the importance of me remaining Catholic/Christian as I was baptized. For me personally, this situation is bizarre and funny at the same time. I love who I am, really.

@@nurousek123 Plenty of Jews marry converts including Orthodox Jews, as long as they are sure that the convert was sincere and they undertook all the obligations of the religion. Some very closed ultra-Orthodox sects discourage marrying a convert and it's rare in those sects for such marriages to happen, like one of them said, if a convert tries to join their community they encourage the convert to marry another convert instead of marrying someone born and raised within the sect. But likewise if a secular Jew, born to a Jewish family but raised irreligious, and then who becomes religious, tries to join their sect, they will also try to pair that person off with another newly religious person or perhaps a convert. These ultra-Orthodox extreme sects don't represent the majority of Orthodox Jews though, and even with these communities there are converts hwo occasionally join and marry born members of the sect (although usually it's to someone who is divorced or has some other "skeleton in the closet" and whose "worth" has come down). Back in the 1960s there was a very big rabbi, the leader of the extreme anti-Zionist sect Neturei Karta who married a French convert from Catholicism, after he became widowed. His followers didn't like it much though, but he did it anyway. But in the Modern Orthodox Jewish communities, both in the USA and in Israel, people marrying converts are not uncommon.

It seems to me that everyone here is accepting and supportive of genuine converts. Hasidic Jews just prefer to marry someone that was raised in a hasidic environment. I really think it's not so much to do with converts being seen as less Jewish as it is a preference for spouses who also come from Jewish families, given the importance of family ties in religious circles. Also, the comment about Sephardim wasn't referring to ethnicity, seeing as there is a religious (and as such cultural) difference between Chassidic, Lithuanian and Sephardic Jews in the ultra-Orthodox community. This idea of genetic purity, is inherently racist in my view and made up. My experience is people who convert to any faith , they tend to better people and follow the teachings of that faith more precisely without prejudice. Most 'selective' groups tend to just be about part of an elite. From a theological viewpoint, only God decides who is good, not people not religious leaders. My secular view is, actions determine whether you are good or not. Not belonging to any groups, faith or ideology. To say otherwise is extreme arrogance and will lead to eugenics issues, in my view Especially when they view groups as sub human. Our European history is already bloody with the atrocities of mad men who espoused such ideas. Let's not entertain such thinking for the sake of humanity. All human beings have rights, I don't care what faith you proclaim, what race, what nationality, what colour. If you believe in an ideology or theological belief, that is your right, and you have the right to practice it in peace and security without discrimination, but your liberty ends where my liberty starts. Religious law can only be applied to people who follow that faith, no one else. And that does not make people right. Its a belief, to be respected, but not accepted. To do otherwise would open up us to accepting anyone making up their own religion and imposing it on others. Europe had and has enough problems with this type of thinking.

@Yechiel Shulman I think that is over simplifying it and is an incorrect interpretation. Marrying within a tribe or sect is driven by a perceived assumption. See, Jews basically are the descendants of twelve sons of Jacob. Abraham was the grandfather of Jacob. Isaac was Jacob's father. But that that doesn't mean that almost every Jew is a pure descendant of the twelve sons of Jacob. In the old testament, there is a record of non Jew converting to Judaism. In the city of Moab there lived a widow named Naomi. Her daughter in law, Ruth was a non Jew. She converted to Judaism. She said that she wanted her mother in law's God to be her God. She said that she wanted her mother in law and that she would go and live in Canaan

Jews are also allowed to pray in a mosque but not in other places, because we're not allowed to pray where there are pictures on the walls. We also need to be clean before praying, and we have 3 big prayers and 2 short ones every day. Now I am not sure what is your own beliefs but the prophet words strengthen the fact that there is literally no difference in Muslims backgrounds/ancestry, keep in mind that this hadith came at a time when slavery was very prominent and Arabs culturally had (and still kind of have some of them )some strong tribal values, hence why Mohamed emphasized there is no difference at all.. But I do agree that sadly there are still some people who do otherwise and think they are better.. P.S. I identify as Arab

My grandfather used to call this Tribe and Faith. We were born into the Tribe and it will always be a part of us. Even those that turn away from the Tribe cannot leave it behind entirely. Faith, to him, was a more personal issue, though still bound within Judaism and he encouraged a similar perspective in me. When it came to converts he would say that they can come into the Faith so long as they are willing to follow our ways and respect our history. Becoming part of the Tribe though, that is harder. That happens over time, it's familial, it's generational. It was easier for him to accept someone through marriage than to accept them just as they are. He's married to a Catholic now. Lovely woman, Irish.

Jews don't care about "racial identity". Hebrew Bible doesn't care about race or skin color, it's rarely mentioned if at all. Jewish identity is a complex and fairly unique matter, as it's basically an ethnic-religious one, or a peoplehood with its own religion. You join the religion and you join the people. You leave the religion (for atheism or other religion), but you are still a part of the people (if you choose to be). Ethnic-religious identity was not uncommon in ancient times when many nations/tribes had her own unique god, but very rare in modern times. Similar modern examples are Yazidis and Druze. The Jewish tradition defines "Am Yisrael"/People Israel"/a Jew quite simply: - one who is born of a Jewish mother, or - one who has converted to Judaism. There are no difference between the two in terms of their Jewish status, and here are multiple commandments instructing to love a convert, not to mistreat them, and not even to remind them that there were gentiles once.
@Digganob5903 жыл бұрын
Remember: In-group biases exist, and nearly everyone has them as an instinct. Don't feel bad about it. Recognize it, and get past it. Let that feeling flow through you, don't feel as if it actually holds any significance. If you feel that feeling holds significance, either it will color every encounter with that out-group person, making you second-guess every thing you say to them, or you will begin to trust that instinct as if there is really a reason not to trust the out-group person. When you feel that in-group bias, meet the person, and talk to them, get to know them. The in-group instinct will melt away with time. This is how a black man managed to convert many KKK members. He got to know them, and despite even their conscious biases, they began to like him.

As a Gentile, I really believe there are a lot of important and beautiful lessons in Judaism. However, it is so tightly tied to a culture and history which simply doesn’t resonate for most non-Jews. I believe that culture and history plays an important part in its ties to Judaism for Jews. I wish there was a way to make the universal lessons more accessible to non-Jews.

when you convert, you join the jewish people, their culture and history. It becomes yours as you become a part of the jewish people in far more sense than just religious practices. You can see it as naturalization. In the past, the converts basically assimilated into the jewish culture and rarely, if at all kept any aspects of the gentile culture. In modern times it is different of course and cultures are mixed to a certain extent anyway. But if the jewish culture and history do not resonate with you at all, I'm not sure why would you want to convert and join the jewish people then. There is an interesting correspondence between one Obadiah, a 12th century convert from Islam, and Maimonides, a prominent philosopher and influential Jewish scholar in the Middle Ages who lived in Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Palestine. Obadiah wrote several letters to Maimonides, asking about the status of the convert in Judaism. Could he say the parts of prayer that refer to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as his forefathers? Could he thank God for having taken “us” out of Egypt or thank God for not having made him a gentile? (not that there is anything bad about being a gentile)-all parts of the standard prayer liturgy. Maimonides replied to his letters, assuring him that he could. As a full-fledged member of the Jewish nation, Obadiah was just as much a descendant of our forefathers, and heir to the Jewish tradition, as any other Jew.

I'm a convert and have heard numerous times "convert for a convert" when looking for a shidduch. But I wonder if they realize how big of a mistake an offence that is for a convert to here. My Rav said he would never match a convert with a convert unless it was an outstanding match since most convert to convert marriages end in divorce. I was close to marrying twice. Both times to girls from religious families but both times it didn't work out for other reasons. One was dispute of living in Israel vs America and the other was a language barrier. The convert for a convert theory in dating is a big compliant amongst converts that i know. Also the comment of converts being hard on Israel because they bring bad traits is based on the opinion of Rashi. Tosfos says converts are hard on Israel because they're more observant and keep the mitzvos out of love and choice rather than being forced on them at birth which causes born Jews to be jealous or feel bad for not loving the mitzvos in the same way.

I don't think that's how he meant it- he was comparing the feeling of certainty one should have when forming a long term relationship with another living thing. His point is that it is not trivial and if you're second guessing at all then you prob shouldn't do it. I don't see a comparison here between the two groups and I think he has a good point about relationships in general. If one finds faults in a being for things beyond its control then its best they don't get involved with that being for everyone's sake.

When you convert to Judaism you essentially join a tribe. You agree that you believe in the things they do, take on their customs and practices and count yourself as one of the people. Judaism today has moved on a lot from its origins but its still a very tribal religion/nation in some ways. And like you see with Christianity and Islam that have the same origins - there are always disagreements, always fights over who is the most right, or most authentic or which is the most correct way of doing things. You see it in Christianity with arguments over the trinity and Evangelicals not recognising Catholics as proper Christians, and with mainstream Islam not recognising Sufism or Sunnis and Shias fighting. The same exists in Judaism between religious and non religions, Sephardi and Ashkenazi etc. Its not so much that they are racist, but they live in a very closed off world with a tribal mentality still and they think their way is the right way. Its not great but its not a particularly evil thing to have those opinions of being more right unless they are forcing their ways on others ..

That totally goes against the torah teachings from the moment they convert they are considered reborn and given a Jewish soul and they are just as Jewish as anyone else. It even goes as far to say that a convert ends up making born jews look bad cause a convert will completely change his lifestyle to connect to God where as a born jew doesn't give being Jewish a second thought and doesn't appreciate it as much as the convert. A convert will usually also go all the way regarding commandments cause it's something he chose and not born into. And rabbi akiva which was a HUGE person who was featured in the torah. And his father in made the same mistake this man is making. And guess what he ended up being one of the biggest poepl in the Bible till today.
