The New Stratos - Jason Cammisa on the Icons

Jason Cammisa is back - not only driving the MAT New Stratos, but explaining what made the original Lancia Stratos a legend. Learn what makes this carbon-fiber supercar even better than the Ferrari F430 it's based upon - from its Pininfarina design to its extensive wind-tunnel testing and development.
The Stratos story begins in 2002 when Chris Hrabalek, Lancia enthusiast, created an homage car for his senior project in automotive design at the Royal College of the Arts. One of the backers of that project, German billionaire Michael Stoschek, wanted one.
Hrabalek and Stoschek teamed up with Pininfarina Special Projects, spending untold millions to develop the New Stratos. Based on a Ferrari F430 but shortened by 8 inches in the wheelbase, the new car wears carbon-fiber body panels and no fluff. It weighs 110 pounds less than the 430 Scuderia - the lightweight version of the F430.
This New Stratos has a 6-speed gated manual transmission. Modifications to the 4.3-liter Ferrari V-8 bump output to 540 horsepower. No carpets or sound deadening make for a visceral experience, and the car's incredible looks and insane proportions complete the experience.
Up to 25 examples of the New Stratos will be produced by Manifattura Automobili Torino. MAT, as it's abbreviated, was founded by Paolo Garella, who served as Special Projects Manager at Pininfarina during the New Stratos project.

As a 70's kid I LOVED the Stratos, and there was 1 in Houston,texas that I actualy ALMOST got to buy. UNFORTUNATLY , I pulled the trigger on a 67 GTO instead, and have kicked myself in the ass ever since. The Stratos was just a bit more than I could afford, not to mention they were no longer imported and the one I looked at needed REAL work to make it street worthy again. I WILL one day have one though.

I have a great respect for Luca di Montezemolo. He did amazing things in Ferrari. But trying to kill the Stratos project was the worst bulls**it of his life. Lancia; the most winningest constructor in rallying of all time from The '60s to The '90s with the Fulvia HF 1.6, the Stratos, the 037/Monte Carlo & the Delta Integrale HF, a 4-wheeled shopping basket turned into an all-wheel drive, fire-breathing, competitor-destroying little monster. No other manufacturer has come close to winning more constructor titles in rallying. And kudos to Jason for being a manual transmission enthusiast. Even more kudos for being knowledgeable about rallying, something which few Americans (who think that going anti-clockwise on a banked track for hours on end is the best thing in the world) know much about. Also, saw Jeremy Clarkson review a kit car recreation of the Stratos with an Alfa 3 litre V6 powering it. It went fast, but for some reason, it didn't handle very well. Might have been the Clarkson factor at work there. It also kept falling apart. Saw Clarkson & Hammond review a genuine Stratos on Top Gear once. It was very funny watching them trying to be comfortable in it with the pedals being nearly in the centre & them sitting shoulder to shoulder & the gear knob so close to Hammond's knee, Clarkson couldn't help but touch it.

All the Italian brands are intertwined and share. Alfa Romeo’s famous 155 DTM racer actually used a Lancia V6. Lancia 037 was the seed that grew into the F40. The Stratos has a Ferrari V6 and modern Maserati and Alfa use Ferrari designed V8 and V6TT. This new Stratos fits right in and a genuine ultra exclusive pure blood Italian stallion. I would love to have one, every detail is exactly what I dream about in fantasy land life that may one day arrive.

A year later and I feel the exact same. I’ll take mine in Rosso Mars with all red interior with bronze/gold wheels. Start with an F430 instead of a Scuderia and it starts to become a bit closer to reality. 6spd, sport cats and serious tune for 93 octane. Dream car stuff that will happen in this life time.
