not really it means the guy got restricted meaning and not alot of contact and from the size of the garage it focus probably on mass service. The service is probably good but he seems like the kind of guy who charge 1 hours even if its 15 min its the spot where you go do a oil change but dismantling an engine gonna cost you 3000$ XD. 80$ to make a diagram from your car with a carburetor its like 10 part max the only hidden thing in a car of those years is the fuse box maybe a hidden fuel pump LOL he talk like this engine gonna need 1000 spark plug pulled out in 15 minute. when you lack knowledge issue and trouble look like grand canyon.

Not strictly related to auto mechanics, but any craftsperson - if they're better off not making that money and instead suggest you to get better serviced by someone else or not even bothering doing something, you follow their advice. They're doing quite the opposite of trying to rip you off.

Hey @Car Wizard one thing I can help with - that fan controller he has is an Afco 80199 fan controller and you can download the instructions from Speedway Motors. The system works by providing GROUND (not Power) and the green wire is the over-ride which should be connected to a powered switch when the AC turns on. Maybe it's wired to a pressure switch which is failed instead of the actual clutch power. I have the exact same unit on my modified Corvette. Hope it helps you or the owner!

@Zo Fryer Why can't you service your own EFI fuel system? I've been doing this professionally since before EFI systems and I know both systems well and I'm here to tell you that plugging in a laptop and changing the AF ratio and timing is a lot easier, a lot faster, and a hell of a lot less messy than changing jets in a carburetor and using a timing light. EFI system's aren't any more difficult to learn than the old system's, especially the aftermarket stuff, you can download the software right off of the internet to work with any of them. And contrary to what I've heard hillbillies saying for 35+ year's now vehicle manufacturer's didn't spend hundreds of millions of dollars over the year's developing computer controlled EFI systems "just to keep people from working on their own vehicles", they did it because of ever increasing efficiency standards from the EPA, not to keep people from working on their own vehicles, anyone with an IQ low enough to think that is going to screw up anything they're working on whether it's a carb or EFI, and then of course it'll be everyone's fault but their's.
@dukecraig2402
@dukecraig2402 3 жыл бұрын
@Zo Fryer I thought we were talking about cars here, why is it every time the subject of performance modifications for cars or motorcycles is being talked about people want to bring up what John Deere does? These aftermarket systems are designed for the customer to easily tune the system, what in the world does John Deere have to do with it? And it's a bigger difference than 2 MPG with these system's, the narrative of "They don't make 'em like that anymore" only lasted until about the mid 80's when it come's to performance, you can buy a bone stock performance car nowadays that'll blow the doors off of any 60's muscle cars, it'll get twice the mileage, make twice the HP and hold a rock steady idle, the reality is that there's soccer mom's that are driving cross overs that'll beat any 60's performance car in the quarter mile, stop in 2/3rds the distance and out corner them, and the fact is they're like that because they were forced to improve everything needed for them to be that good because of government regulations, everyone's cussed the EPA over the year's but really the vehicles have become that more powerful because of the engineers being forced to make them more efficient, more efficiency=more power, it's actually been a blessing in disguise.

@@dukecraig2402 You are absolutely correct. I had a 71 GTO 400 heavily modified and it was a blast to drive but todays factory performance cars would blow it away, give you better gas mileage, smoother, quieter ride and have the AC on and all I would see would be tail lights. As much as I did enjoy those days they really don't make them like that anymore and be grateful for it. Well, that is until you suddenly see that loose wire/vacuum hose and have to find out where it supposed go. I like watching todays video's for Hellcats, Camero SS, Corvette's and they perform magic compared to the original muscle cars.

Some people think Horsepower rules all. I think it was Motor Trend a while back did a head to head comparison between a carb and FI, and the carb developed more power than the FI. They used the same engine on a engine dyno, just swapped out the fuel delivery system. For the extra few HP, for most drivers, hard to justify the headache of a carb. If you are running 1320's and every HP counts, then sure.

That Vette would be best off with factory LS injection, ignition and a complete Vintage air AC kit, if the owner intends to keep it. Less of a hodge-podge and then you have obd2 diagnostics and a unified AC system with documentation. Bite the bullet on the expense and have a much better sorted machine to enjoy for the future. Last month had a guy come in wanting control arm bushings and a brake booster and master cylinder for a 55' F100, those were originally straight axle and manual brake trucks. It had been upgraded back in the 90s before he got it. He had no idea what the donor car or cars were... Now I do modify cars myself Stick mostly to cars older than 79 and if I DO use parts from a different car...say granada brakes on an early mustang I actually keep a binder with a list of all the donor cars and parts that were used..and if possible part numbers. And if I sell a car that binder goes with it.

Wizard is right. It's almost impossible to find a shop that has a technician who knows how to work on a carburetor or the tools even to do something like checking the dwell and timing. Owning an old school car isn't for sissies, or the automotive uninitiated. I came of car driving age in the 60's, and I learned how to do all of the above, and I can guarantee that given the choice, I will take an electronic ignition, fuel injected engine in a restomod over a carbureted old school ignition engine every time. Restomod is about keeping the car as stock looking as original while gaining all the benefits of modern technology. It makes no sense to try and hang on to old school traditions that didn't work all that well to begin with.

My '82 El Camino originally came from the factory with a 305 Chevy V8. When I got it, someone had swapped out the old 305 for an even OLDER 327 Chevy V8. Thankfully, a small block chevy is still a small block chevy, no matter what the cubic inch displacement is, so it still works perfectly fine. But i'm not everyone, I appreciate this insight into the hardships that LS swaps can bring to the table, I personally think LS swaps are overdone and overrated, and I feel that I am better off sticking with the old school Chevy small block, just get as much power as I can out of it without over-stressing it.... I have a ls1 t56 swapped 1989 Firebird, did all the work myself. I have a binder of diagrams and parts. I also have a label under the hood with hose and belt info. I also built it so all wear items are stock parts. You can simply walk into a parts store open the binder and say I need this part. Everything works, AC, cruise, and all factory gauges. I built my harness myself. Also the cruise module on the vett is from a 1999-2001 1500 truck, they don’t require the signal from the pcm to work like the car modules do and is commonly used in swaps, it’s a pretty simple circuit. There are shops that specialize in LS swaps and know the common items. The only non standard parts are my thermostat housing, I needed a straight neck. Even my bigger brakes uses caliper and pads from newer car so you can easily get parts.

Exactly and the only other thing it would require is a low pressure electric fuel pump added to the system. Hopefully added close to the tank to pressurize the system so it has less chance of vapor lock and power it up with a three prong ($10 Chevy Vega) oil pressure switch to operate a relay when it gets oil pressure. EDIT: Everything he is saying is obviously very true in a lot of cases but this one is still in the basic simplistic car repair mode. The ones when someone does an old car and blends a donor car wiring harness w/factory fuel injection and body control modules controlling some accessories. And wiring nightmares, like splices and gooey electrical tape jobs with inaccessible relays, fuses, connectors and fuse boxes mounted on the other side of a metal wheel well against the fire wall.

I'm with you. This was a bit of a letdown to me. Tuning a carb for me if it's a 4150 means heading out to the strip or deserted country road with a timing light, vacuum gauge, box of jets/jet driver, spark plug socket/ratchet & a temp gun. With those few things I can make one run like it's injected & have a blast doing it. Who wouldn't wanna get paid to run a car fast up & down the road a few times??? I'm not sure what's involved with those Barry Grant Thermoquad copies but I guess they're much the same as a Carter/Edelbrock with metering rods & such. Not exotic but not in every corner speedshop either. Maybe that's what scared him off a little? The A/C problem? Nothing a simple trinary switch from Vintage Air or eBay wouldn't fix. If he does that "running off the compressor clutch wire" thing, that fan will have a much shorter life from running while on the freeway when it doesn't need to. I can deal with someone who truly doesn't know & I welcome the chance to share knowledge. But lazy? No thanks!

It's essentially a new car except for the fiberglass body. It got a relatively recent Mustang engine with fuel injection, handbuilt frame, digital gauges, and it looks amazing now, you can't tell it's not original from the outside. As a carburetor guy myself, in the 80’s I was actually glad to see them disappear as emission devices were added, ending up with dozens of vacuum hoses. I was fortunate enough to have started on carbs in the late 60’s, but EFI in 1977. Other than CIS or mechanical injection, in 1976 model year, only two cars had true EFI, one injector per cylinder. The Cadillac Seville w/350 & the Datsun 280Z. Although it had injector #7 for cold enrichment by a simple thermo-time bi-metallic switch inside. It was stamped with max time & max temperature. The colder it was, the long it sprayed. A 3 or 4 gas sniffer in the tailpipe was normal. Anyone can put an “LS” in a car/truck. But not providing a detailed schematics, location and part numbers of non-factory parts is lowering himself to “Grease Monkey” status, doing the owner a dis-service and any future owner. The “Wizard” is right. I left a dealer of young capable Acura techs. On the way out the door one ask me how the fuel pump on his 2-stroke 6 cylinder bass boat engine worked. I told him to Google it! I paid my price, no tech school, just did it and learned. Mistakes live in your brain until you die. Doing it correctly & right using best practices is forgotten when they hand your paycheck! I am planning on an LS swap on my '88 Grand Fury with a big turbo because they are just bad to the bone. With that said, I don't get why you would swap in an LS in a basically stock configuration. You can upgrade the heads on a regular old small block and add a nice intake and cam and they make the same or better HP than a comparable LS without having to get expensive pulleys and brackets and a modified wiring harness and possibly having to cut and notch the frame and other problems. Especially if you're going to dump the fuel injection! And if you want to add fuel injection to the Gen 1 small block it really doesn't interfere with the factory wiring. As the "Car Wizard" so astutely says, diagnosing this Frankenstein is a nightmare while diagnosing an original style engine is far easier.

It's cost, really. The biggest, nastiest carburetors I know are like $1500, for a 1425 CFM 4 barrel, single carb. It (the one he has) looks like a Street Demon carburetor - They flow 625-750 CFM and only costs about $400, under $500 max. Fuel Injection starts at about $1000-2000 at least. They're also pretty simple. It's basically just fuel you need to have the Carb work. You just kind of plop it on there and go from there. Assuming you know how to tune it, or know someone who does. Carburetors aren't bad. They're cheap as hell and they can make good power - but don't get me wrong, fuel injection is definetly much better. But more expensive as well. Dude was probably just trying to save some cash. He'd need a different intake to make it work for EFI as well, which'd add more cost ontop of EFI being notably more expensive.

Great on fuel, very snappy, and throws you in the seat when you open it up. Odd thing is it's technically not a 4 bbl. It only has one large throttle plate in the back; it's a 3 bbl. The swap alone is going to cost you 1,000's and if you do nothing to it, your only going to get around 300 HP at the flywheel (not the rear tires). The 4 bolt main SBC that came in that car could VERY easily break into and well over the 300HP mark with a mild-performance re-build that wouldn't require the 1,000's of dollars in Moding to make it fit and work. Also you, me, and other shops have an easier go at working on it for you when things wear out or go wrong. Saving you money down the road. LS Swaps are great, don't get me wrong. But they are only great if they are (1) done right, and done to their full potential. Otherwise you are buying into a Fad, and it's an expensive Fad to get caught up in.

Was all for “that’s what you get buying a modded car” then you got to the pad on the trans... Previous owner screwed the current owner.

Yeah, to me that would be enough to demand a refund with the threat of legal action. Sure, the buyer should have had a mechanic inspect it first, but there was intent to deceive. It makes the car worth several thousand less once you know it needs several thousand dollars worth of work. Also, it begs the question: what else is he hiding?

It's 99 here, which is about 2 hours north of the Wizards shop. You can have your old car with no air. Personally, I don't care for making soup in my shorts.

TableRocked it’s a device that measures the air/fuel ratio with an O2 sensor in the exhaust. That will tell you if you’re running lean or rich.

People are cheap they don’t wanna spend the 3000$ to get a new intake fuel injection gut the exhaust weld on the flanges you screw in the o2 sensors then do all the software on ur computer tons of wiring new fuse box it’s not that simple even the holly efi kit a bitch to install carb 5 minute install done

@@TheMechanicj except that on an LS engine it's not that simple! You have to buy a conversion manifold and remember it has no distributor so you have to buy an MSD controller for the coils!!! ITS NOT 5 MINS AND DONE MORON!

Makes perfect sense.. AND there is no need to permanently install it or add a permanent fuel management computer. And people, no need to assume anyone was being cheap, we have to remember we do not know the car's backstory and there could be a very sensible reason for what is in there now. I get to go under a lot of classic cars and today its rare to find one that has not been molested over the past 50 years. Doesn't really matter which solution is implemented, its a modification and will take time and thought to execute properly. But SFS's suggestion is a good one for the average home tinkerer. (Wizard could just go borrow a tailpipe sniffer and get to the bottom of it pretty quick).

A very honest review of what can and does happen with an engine swap. I'm swapping in a 472 Cadillac into my '72 Chevy C20. It's not as involved as this, but there will be a couple challenges here and there. I went with a Holley Sniper EFI setup that is very simple to setup and run. If one is methodical and takes their time and doesn't succumb to "go fever", a restomod can turn out really well and drastically improve the handling and drivability of a vintage car or truck.

it doesn't make any sense why someone would go to all that trouble to put an LS engine in a older Corvette and not go with fuel injection which those engines are originally made for fuel injection!! they might as well have just stuck with the original 350 that probably came with it originally which by the way was carbureted!! It defeats the whole purpose of doing it in the first place.smh..😔

All it takes is an air fuel gauge , tuning kit for the carb ,some time and a bit of thought. Understanding how it works helps to lol. I am in the process of turning my 78 firebird and it’s a bit to wrap your head around with the vacuum advance , ignition, timing, carb calibration. I got it close but not perfect.

Love your videos, Car Wizard. Carbs are ok if they are set up properly. I would certainly install a wideband so you can see what the car is doing while you drive it around. I found that it's hard to tell if it's going too lean or too rich because the symptoms are similar and I'm not an old school carburetor expert. I've had both fuel injection and carburation in my '69 Stingray. So far, the carburetor seems to work better although I'm sure after the fuel injection fully self-tunes, it will run much better.
