Ortaköy neighbourhood is part of Beşiktaş district and sits on Istanbul’s European shore, giving visitors unforgettable views of the Bosphorus strait. Despite being slightly further away from the city’s main tourist attractions - mostly located in Sultanahmet and the Taksim Square area - it’s worth taking a tram or bus here to discover an area that’s constantly reinventing itself, changing from an enclave for artists, students and bohemians to a place with a cosmopolitan air that fascinates tourists and locals.
A good way to explore the area is to take the tram to Kabatas station and then walk alongside the strait to Ortaköy. This gives you the chance to admire the monument-like Dolmabahçe palaces, seat of the Ottoman Empire ever since sultan Abdulmecit decided that Topkapi Palace wasn’t comfortable enough, and nor was Çırağan Palace, today a luxurious 5-star hotel.
The heart of Ortaköy is a lovely quay just ten minutes on foot from Çırağan Palace. The quay has wonderful views of Mecidiye mosque, popularly known as Ortaköy mosque; colossal Bogaz Kröprüsü bridge, which is 1074 m in length and was the first to connect Istanbul’s European and Asian shores; and Beylerbeyi Palace, built on the orders of sultan Murat III as his summer residence.
The mosque isn’t as famous as other religious buildings in the city, such as Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, but offers travellers one of the most beautiful images of Istanbul because it seems to float on a platform above the waters of the Bosphorus. Built in the 19th century, its architecture features Neo-Baroque and Neo-Classical elements. The building’s exterior has an elegant dome and a pair of minarets that soar towards the skies, while the interior is decorated with several glass chandeliers that illuminate the space together with light from the large east-facing windows.
The temple had an area reserved for the royal family, which is only natural when you learn that was ordered to be built by Ottoman sultan Abdulmecit who wanted a mosque close to his summer residence - Beylerbeyi Palace - which is located right in front. Every Friday the family would take a boat and cross the river to pray here.
If you’d like to enjoy Ortaköy neighbourhood, the best time to visit is Sunday morning when its streets are liveliest thanks to its busy street market, or any day at sunset. In this corner of the city, on the European shore of the Bosphorus, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets in Istanbul.
