Istanbul paralyzed! Turkey has never seen such a snowfall.
Heavy snowfall has hit parts of Turkey, forcing Istanbul Airport to close to flights. A strong blizzard left up to 60 cm of snow in some places.
Extreme weather has caused transport problems across country. Istanbul was hit by its first snowstorm of the winter. Some passengers as well as vehicles were stuck due to heavy snow.
Emergency teams delivered thousands of containers of food and drinks to those stranded. Every day the municipality is also distributing more than two tons of food for stray animals. Routes from northwestern Turkey to Istanbul are closed until further notice. More than 5 000 people were stranded across the country and more than 7000 taken to shelters in seven provinces. The southeast of the country was also affected, with 200 people stranded on a snow-hit motorway in Diyarbakir province. Most schools were already closed for a two-week semester break.

I lived there for a year. Big snowstorms don't happen every year, but they are not unheard of. The last big snow was in January 2017. The snow is very similar to that of a place like Buffalo NY. Very cold air originating from western Russia crosses the Black Sea and you get "sea effect" for several days. Depth varies from one part of the city to the other depending on where the bands are situated relative to the local hills. Some spots get several feet of snow, others get less. The old part of the city is hilly with extremely narrow roads. It's already difficult to drive without snow.

There is nothing wrong with praying that everyone stays safe, we are humans and should want everyone to have a safe and happy life. Я живу в России, и у нас этой зимой, тоже выпало много снега. Днями ранише ездил на дачу. Дорогу чистят регулярно труженники сельсовета, неподалёку от дач-кооператива, деревня. Но от дороги до дачи, снегу по калено. Сапоги у меня настоящие, меховые, прошёл прекрасно. На дачу добрался, взял лопату и все почистил. А мне уже почти 70 годов. И я не жалуюсь. Пусть учатся преодолевать трудности, а не делать из ни катострофу.

Да, для теплых стран снег это Шок, это примерно оказаться на Северном полисе, из тепла и в холод. Да.... непривычно. Это как нам Северянам 25градусов тепла, уже жарко, а с температурой воды в 15градусов мы чувствуем блаженство и радуемся как дети. actually we have these type of extreme blizzards every 3-5 year periods in Istanbul (2004-2006-2012-2015-2017-2022 etc.) . Also average snowfall every year in Istanbul. But in northern, central and eastern Turkey these type of blizzards are very usual.
