A review of a genuine Isuzu OEM Oil Catch Can - a.k.a. PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Oil Separator. A good, high quality Oil Catch Can and possibly a better alternative that what is currently available in the aftermarket.
Isuzu Part Numbers:
8-97324682-1 - SEPARATOR; OIL/PCV
8-98002346-0 - PCV FILTER
What is an Oil Catch Can and do you need one for your engine?
Oil Catch Cans (PCV Oil Separators) are essential for modern common rail direct injection diesel and even some gasoline engines running an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems. PCV or blow-by gases are the additional gases produced by an internal combustion engine during the compression and combustion strokes. Some unburnt & exhaust gases escape past the piston rings and into the crankcase. These gases then have to be vented in order for the pressure in the crankcase to be relieved otherwise they can be known to damage gaskets and seals. In older style engines, the blow-by was just simply vented to atmosphere. However, this changed due to emission regulations. (Blow-by gases typically consist of: water, unburnt fuel, engine oil, exhaust gas and more harmful pollutants.) Today, the blow-by gasses are simply directed back into the air intake of the engine (usually just before the turbocharger). This allows the blow-by gases to be burnt off during combustion. However, with the ever tightening emission regulations, most modern diesel engines are fitted with EGR systems which recirculates some of the exhaust gasses back into the air intake. This then mixes with the blow-by gases and will start to coat the turbocharger, intercooler, air intake manifold, head and valves with oily mist residue. This will then harden (carbonise) and cake over time. Eventually, the carbon will build up that much the engine will suffocate (due to lack of fresh air) compromising performance, fuel economy and longevity.
A good quality Oil Catch Can simply filters (separates) the oily mist from the blow-by before it enters the air intake. This prevents or reduces the likeliness of carbon building up in the engine air intake. An Oil Catch Can is an inexpensive, preventative means to extend the life of your engine.
Beware of cheap Oil Catch Cans. There are only a few good quality catch cans available on the market of which this is one of them.

Its very interesting. I went into Isuzu ute the other day interested in possibly buying one. I asked if they offered an optional catch can system. They said no and its not recommended as it would give them a reason to void warranty. I said well ive found a genuine isuzu catch can part that is sold. He looked surprised and said oh i wasnt aware of that, but no its not on the options list.

Hi there. Awesome video, very helpful. I'm about to order one from my isuzu dealer in South Africa. Over here no one is that familiar with catch cans. The agent says it will not work on the muX as it is for the bigger trucks. From your video I believe you say it will be fine though. Can you maybe confirm from your experience? I understand I will just need to make a bracket and work the piping. Thanks again

Hi I did buy it about a year ago. From Westvaal menylyn it was R1600ish if I remember correctly. It's a bit of a pain to install. You'll need to make a bracket to mount it and the pipe in and out angles are a pain. But it is definitely possible and once installed it works very well. I drained almost 200ml ot of it after about 10k km.

NJS instructional Hi there From Australia QLD I have got one of these from a mechanic mate of mine He works at ISUZU trucks Just wanted to know how good are these oil catch cans. mechanic mate reckons they are better than provent and other brands because they are made from Japan. I also get the filters off him for free aswell whenever I need them. I've got a ford ranger 2009 pk model I've had to make a custom bracket for it to fit. First I thought the top hose on can was the inlet for the pcv, and outlet hose down below. I noticed my catch can would smoke more when i open the lid and the hoses would get really hot lol. I also noticed my fuel going down quicker aswell So i searched up a video and found yours. You pointed out the bottom hose is the inlet pcv lol and the top is outlet to the maf hose to turbo. I then ask my mechanic and said same thing as your video , he just forgot to mention it to me lol haha so i switched it over like your video and car is running better and hoses on inlet and outlet aren't as hot. Thanks heaps for your video. I have had the filter on for a month no What are your thoughts on this filter?
@NJSInstructional
@NJSInstructional 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rose, I'm glad to hear and thank you for the positive feedback. Yes the inlet and outlet piping seems a bit odd but makes sense when you think through the design... they are definitely a high quality product and I do recommend them over the aftermarket units. Cheers.

Hey NJS I've had it on the 4wd for maybe 2 to 3 months now opened up the filter, theirs a bit of oil under the top lid when do you think oil will drain down . I have a valve tap at the end down to chassis , but notice no oil in it Does it just require more driving around for more Ks What do you think ?? but I notice my car seems to be breathing much better
@NJSInstructional
@NJSInstructional 4 жыл бұрын
@@peterkellam250 Hi Peter, I can confirm that the inlet pipe is the lower port and the return pipe is the upper port. Reason is, if the catch can fills with oil and it isn't drained, the oil is not sucked back into the engine, hence why the port is higher up. Cheers

G'day 👍 So there's no pressure relief valve ?
@NJSInstructional
@NJSInstructional 4 жыл бұрын
Correct, no pressure relief. Keep in mind, when this is plumbed into the turbo there is a negative pressure (vacuum) in the PCV outline line. Therefore, there is no need for an over pressure relief. In fact, an over pressure relief valve can allow for water to enter in during cooling esp. sudden cooling eg. During a river crossing.

Drain versus return to sump. Too many contaminants including moisture in what is separated off, you don't want to send that back into your oil. Drain with tap and drain every 4 or 5 thousand ks.
