Nostalgia's a helluva drug. LD and Clint literally could not do what Puli or Wes are doing now for their clubs. Bro Clint could NOT get off the bench for Spurs. Jozy DID NOT PLAY until he went to AZ. Our boys literally scored in CL a few days ago?!? Sanneh was decent at Nuremburg but could never mathc the level of Dest now at PSV. Johnny OB amazing a Ajax and who knows if he could've been fit. But the same for Reyna?! Almost all of these guys, you're looking at them after their entire careers but at the time, both of those teams play ABYSMAL games. So many garbage friendlies and competitive matches. You're measuring this team based on their performance as a USMNT collective but for they were at mediocre clubs and were mediocre. Lastly, and this is ALWAYS forgotten. The game is so different now, right? Players before just cannot get away with what they did before. So WHY ARE WE always comparing the past and today as if they're equal. Our team IS soft, and I'm pissed as hell, but don't start this comparison game and talking about it like it's fact just because you can see these players total arc and then play off the 25 and 20 yr olds because they're just potential.
@nerychristianАй бұрын
Maybe the quality of players in Europe has dropped in the past 10 years. Realistically, wouldn't you say that European players in 2010 were better than current players?
@nwerz-1022Ай бұрын
Laughable takes especially about Christian and Weston not being automatic starters based on their actual career not just when they’re wearing the star and stripes. Landon’s one moment was in 2010 and puli did that in his first World Cup at 23 for us. Let’s not list the accomplishments for club it’s a waste of all of our time
@joshlynn3185Ай бұрын
My bad Malik Tillman right now has 21 goals in Europe at 22 year old Bradley scored only 26 in his European career

@dirks6550Ай бұрын
2010, Bradley yes, but Adams (if healthy) over Edu. Pulisic over Davies possibly. Dest possibly over Cherundolo.
@chriskohhАй бұрын
Have to say I agree with the assessment of the '02 squad. I feel that your logic is a bit biased though for that 2010 team. Either Chuck or Jozy is definitely starting on the bench to make room for Clint up top, Pulisic and Landy Cakes on the wings. Wes starts over Edu. Mo couldn't pass the ball further than 15 yards without consistently giving the ball away. Jedi starts no matter the era, though Beasley doesn't get enough love
@georgebamete2650Ай бұрын
Pulisic not in the team... the balls this guys has..!!! Pulisic is top 10 one of the best wingers in the world right now, with club stats no other American has come close to! Scores goals for club and country like no American has ever scored.. The balls this guy has, unbelievable. Since soccer ever started for America, the first 3 names on the team is Pulisic, Robinson, and Mckennie, then you add the rest, whomever they're!

This is what’s wrong with former players imo. They are always going to think they are better than the current group. It’s absolutely crazy. They look at this current group being hampered by coaching and uses that as an indictment against their talent.
@pinktaco738Ай бұрын
Exactly. These are the same dudes that said Donovan could have played for Real Madrid
@blackice1796Ай бұрын
@@pinktaco738 I had no arguments about the 2002 team because I was 12 years old and not interested in soccer then, but when they said “who would start over Bradley and Edu” and thought they were making a point… I had to dismiss everything they say out of hand at that point. It’s clear they are looking back and are like ‘we played well together’ and value that more than talent.
@bryan5213Ай бұрын
Def some nostalgia takes here. You can definitely argue some of our players aren't as mentally tough as previous generations, but you can't deny the talent. You're also comparing guys with complete careers to guys currently in their mid 20s.
@philiplewis3679Ай бұрын
You guys are blinded by nostalgia. The only thing that previous generations might have over this one is mental toughness. That, however, can be taught. That easily comes down to the coaching of Gregg. With the right coach and the right motivation the current team blows out all previous teams. It doesn't matter if they are on the bench at their club, it is a bench that the older guys could never touch. Musah may not be starting at Milan but Edu wouldn't even make the team. Goalkeeper is the only position that has declined.

Some have said this is one of the most 'talented' groups. But then we also say most of them aren't making previous teams. So maybe that argument about this group missing that grit, drive, pride, guts... if they had that. If we had the attitude...maybe. Jedi over Hedjuk, but mostly because left back is weak.. but we acknowledge jedi doesn't have the dog that Hedjuk did. What's harder to teach? Technique or growl? A lot of those boys were fighters because they had to be. We need to find that for these newer generations.
@dirks6550Ай бұрын
Which of our current players would play in the 2002 roster. Who would be on the team? Pulisic, Jedi, Mckinney, Dest, Adams, maybe Reyna. Starting is a tougher thing to say. But really the difference is many of the players, not all, seemed more like men than kids. Our current team seems like a bunch of kids. Attitude, strength? Or is it actual age? Not sure what that is.
@mdfrenchyАй бұрын
Just a few years ago both of these guys were the ones pumping up the idea that this was the "Golden Generation". It's like these two forgot that we had the incredibly inept Berhalter managing this team for the last SIX YEARS. That's a flipping crime. It's a miracle that Berhalter managed to get this team out of their group in Qatar. The 2002 & 2010 teams had MUCH better managers in Bruce Arena and Bob Bradley.

Id love to revisit this after 2026 WC. When they are talking about the 2002 and 2010 WC, both those teams had all their best players in their prime. LD and Dempesy in 2010 were like 28 at that time. In 2006, LD and Dempsey struggled as they had to carry more of the responsibilities. They then matured and grew to be better in 2010. Pulisic, Adams, Jedi, Mckennie, Dest, will all be around that age by then. Two years from now, they can still grow a lot. I think part of the nostalgia we give to the past teams is overlooking the maturity and age they were at at these times. All the players they are mentioning from past teams, lets compare what they accomplished at the same age as most of the current players.
@s0ccer96Ай бұрын
Adams easily gets in over Edu, McKennie as a sub for Bradley, Pulisic as a starter for that 2010 team. Dest also gets in, same with Jedi.

Your comparison of Current vs Former NT's brings up some interesting questions about generational differences, playing abroad vs domestic, and dual nats: It seems the current team (and younger generations) has less Patriotism when compared to older generations, less fight, less grit and weaker mentally. The players say they're proud to play for the national team, but is this because they have American Pride or because it's means so much for their soccer career? The 02 and 10 WC teams win out on personality, fight, and mental toughness alone. Playing in Europe means more opportunity and more money, but at what cost to the player? Being away from home, friends, and family, living in a strange new city/town/country, constantly fighting American Soccer stereotypes, and more travel for international fixtures all wear on a player. I think Gio needs to play in MLS for this reason. Dude is struggling mentally, which leads to injuries, and needs to ground himself in something familiar. Look at how well Landon played for San Jose and LA compared to his unsuccessful trials abroad. Speaking of Donovan, in his "Kickin' It" interview, he questioned the commitment of certain dual-nationals leading up to the 2014 World Cup. What kind of effect does dual nationals have on a team? Is there a disconnect to the National Team you choose to represent, when you're didn't grow up in that country? Let's be real, Balogun chose us because he wouldn't make the England team and has a better chance of playing in a WC with the US. Look at all the Dual-Nats we had on the 2014 team under Jurgen. Talented, sure, but not all of them understood what it meant to play for your Home Country.

Henry made a great point, comparing the 2010 or 2014 squad to the actual one: Pulisic and Robinson are probably the only ones that could make the squad and start. Mckennie is not an athlete that takes care of himself and Adam’s is always injured. Comparing goalies is laughable. I would take Bocanegra and Demerit over Ream and Richards any day of the week. Landon, Clint, Howard, heck even Bradley were more athletic, passionate and played their hearts out when playing with a US Jersey. I only put Robinson because we have never had a real LB and Bradley used Bornstein and Klinnsmann used Beasley. USA of the past beat Spain, Italy, it was 50/50 vs Mexico but played much better squads with Marquez/Guardado/Chicharito who were in their prime. They also played a confederations cup final. This team cannot even beat a bad Wales team with an old Bale.
