It is always, ALWAYS a good day when I see The Hollar Homestead has uploaded. Thanks for sharing a snippet of your lives with us. Your family is absolutely lovely. Those garden beds are wonderful. I love that you repurposed wood from your timber on the land. You will get a lot of use from those beds and they look so amazing. I love the fact that you left the raw edge, btw. Take care, Heather🇨🇦

There is a guy in Texas at a farm animal rescue sanctuary ("Imma Survivor Sanctuary"). He just does animals, no crop/no garden and he (Lester) has tons of "soiled hay" is what he calls it from cleaning up after all the wonderful animals that he has rescued. Well, he pushes it all into a pile and sets it on fire. Every time he does it, I just cringe because I know all my homesteaders are constantly working hard to eek out as much compost as they can get. I left him a comment to offer his "soiled hay" to any homesteaders nearby. I know that many of them would even come and pick it up if he was unable to drop it off. He is a school teacher and the middle school bus driver and a coach for at least one sport at the high school and then he takes care of 4 horses, 4 donkeys, 15 to 20 goats, 5 pigs (2 pot bellies and 2 wild boars) 2 alpacas, 3 long horn cattle, 1 jersey steer, a bunch of chickens, ducks and geese. He takes nothing from the animals. All he does he give to them. They are all spoiled rotten. It is amazing to see them arrive frightened, scarred, wounded, skeletal, unable to walk, and very rapidly they are another spoiled member of his two pasteurs of survivors (The Bigs and The Littles). He is a saint. But I was thinking, some sort of organization similar to Imma Survivor, maybe you can contact them in your area. I bet there are people nearby with perfect composting material who just consider it a big hassle.

I got a bunch of composted horse manure from a local horse rescue... they push it into a pile in the pasture and dump bedding from the barn in there I am allowed to take as much as I can... they asked nothing in return, but I purchased round bale for the horses to eat over the winter each winter as a thank you perhaps there is a horse rescue nearby you can take your farm truck and fill ‘er up!!

I babysat my nephew who just recently turned 13 when he was a tiny baby and he loved being outside even then...the only way I was able to settle his fussiness was to bundle him up and take him outside. Now he spends most of the summer working on their farm driving tractors -replacing one hired person during their harvest season.

Idea for upping your compost production: get/rent a wood chipper to shredd all the branches and small trees you clear out of pig areas. This stuff adds up quickly. It's amazing to compost and can also be used to mulch your beds.

Even though we lived in the city we had an old church bell on a 4 x 4 pole and my mom rand it when it was time for us to come home. Jeez.. Opening the back door to ring the dinner bell to call back the boys brought back memories. My mom had this huge old wall-mounted bell she got from a schoolhouse that closed down, that dang thing was the size of my head and she would ring it whenever my friends and I had to come back to the house from playing in the woods or down by the river. That bell was so loud, our neighbors used to joke about coming over for dinner whenever they heard it, and we were surrounded by thick woods, a major river and farmland.
