You have to exhaust all options to runaway before you are allowed to use force, or have 100% knowledge they intend to kill you, otherwise you are also a criminal. So if per say, someone breaks into your house, you legally in that moment are supposed to either A. Lock yourself in a room B. Leave the house C. My son in law and daughter took their children to New York eight years ago for vacation. They wanted to take them back this year for part of their daughter’s college graduation gift, but decided against it. They were concerned for their safety. Until this situation improves, an idea I have is that people could carry a "fake" wallet/ purse that doesn't have any cash and just has $0 balance old gift cards in it to give to thieves. They probably won't look through it at the crime scene. Just be creative. When I used to go out dancing with friends, we would put our ID, credit card, etc. in our knee-high boots and didn't even carry a purse. Obviously, this doesn't get to the root of the problem, but this may be a helpful tip in the meantime.

This entire "defund the police" moveent seems like a massive real estate scam. Some politicians in the pockets of highly influential people let crime loose, and make the city untenable. People move out. Houses and apartments are sold for a pittance. A certain group of influential people will buy them cheap. When it is theirs, they discover the value of safety, and puch their vassals, the politicians to bring in Draconian provisions of law. The police is strengthened and crime is eradicated. The city becomes a happy place again, where real estate sells like ho cakes, at exorbitant prices.
