The big money is in the area of Southampton to Amagansett -- old money and massive estates. They're generally not visible from the side streets as they're obscured by huge hedge/shrub lines. The delineating rich/poor roadway is Montauk Highway that runs the entire length of southern Long Island. That said, the comparative poverty adjacent to the "Hamptons" is prevalent. It's not a commercially active environment.

Yeah. A good perspective won't pay the bills forever in a place like that unless they're pulling down millions. You won't believe how many guys from Southern California and the Hamptons I met in the Philippines the last time I was there. Rent a place with some other surf heads for pennies on tbr dollar. The dream is still alive but it's awfully hard to make it work here. Even the old guy has his life ripped out from under him and he's seemingly asking for more. It's time to get serious. Stop voting for the status quo. Only outsiders will change anything. Look at El Salvador. They decided crime was a choice and chose against it. We always went, "out east" for day trips, weekends etc. Sayville was known for its clamming! Even at a young age everyone went to the bay and raked clams from the shore or out in boats. We also fished for a wide variety of seafood and lobsters. It was a large part of our lives. We always had family, friends and neighbors over our house to share the catches of the day. Sometimes we would all meet at a local beach and share our meals with a large fire and entertainment. Roasting, "mickies" in the fire. No matter where we met, everyone would bring a dish to share. We all truly cared for each other and took the time to check in on those in need. Sadly, those days have passed. The bay has been destroyed by the use of pesticides and nitrates. People these days seem to prefer a pretty green lawn rather than fresh seafood from the waters that surround them! Gov't keeps talking about more and more housing? We are destroying the natural beauty that can never be replaced! I pray that we can all join together and fight for more protected land and sea, where there are less housing developments and more free spaces for life to recover from the damage mankind has impacted on this beautiful Island, I call, "home"!

It kills me to see that older guy describe his wife taking most of what he likely built while praising his own replacement. Those hard working Latinos are living dozens to a house. And once they learn your skills, probably from you directly, they'll start their own business and undercut your hiring other illegals, pay them less than you would, and finally deal your fate. It would be amazing if we had government and native born pellet that actually recognized and fought for their own best interests. Americans have become soft and stupid even with disaster staring them straight in the face.

Long Island could absolutely have it's own series. Suffolk County is like a state unto itself with so many walks of life and interesting characters. And of course - a host of craziness in the last decade. Housing costs, addiction, immigration, conservation of land vs overdevelopment, sustainable energy feasability. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else but there is certainly a pervasive sense of fear from the locals for the future of our home.

Yes and no but it can't be argued that we've become a nanny state full of dependents and micro managers. It used to be totally normal for people to hitch hike and stop and camp alongside the road where ever they pleased. There are still wild places left but I'm as guilty as most of not going to them. I'm actually more troubled at few people even strive for freedom and independence. I wish I could find some more younger people to join me in my antics. My older friends 50s and 60s defiantly have a better outlook on life.

@PeterSantenello I think you missed a huge story here. I live in this area and that’s that the cost of living is so high in the Hamptons workers for these summer establishments drive hours to get work, ship in people from the Caribbean, etc. Some migrants live in the woods off the highways just to work landscaping / restaurant gigs. If you’re ever interested in coming back out this way I can show you the north fork of Long Island. If it’s the summer we can do the peconic by boat.
@vanessahobbes30723 ай бұрын
I live in a different part of the country, but same thing. Not enough locals can afford to live here and therefore not enough workers to meet the tourism demands. At the 25 minute mark, I hope that them discussing lawns with no native plants + the poison used to make those lawns green + useless golf courses in people's backyard make people understand how idiotic those things are.
