It Came from the Desert TurboGrafx CD longplay

Longplay of the TurboGrafx CD version of It Came from the Desert, which is pretty much nothing like the classic Amiga original it's based on.
It has some similarities though as you will see if you've played the Amiga version - your main ally is a scientist, you're in a desert town in the middle of nowhere (though they changed the original name of Lizard Breath to Lovelock), the overhead ant battle minigame is quite similar and how the action part of the game consists of minigames is also the same idea as in the original... though the minigames in this one aren't very good at all.
This version isn't really much of a game, consisting mainly of very cheesy video sequences.
I have to admit I enjoyed playing it though, mainly because of how cheesy it is.

The fantasy girl who appears on the tv is played by Musetta Vander who also played Sindel in the Mortal Kombat Annihilation movie.

That's interesting. The guy that plays the sheriff is the bad guy (Carnavash or something) from Phantasmagoria, I think.

The whole part of this being live-action and tons of voices really immerses you a lot better into the game. I'd play this over the amiga version anyday just because of the voices.

The ending is rather ambiguous. It looks like the Queen somehow lived. The line about "we all have to die sometime" suggests poor Buzz won the battle but lost the war. Since the dream girl only existed as projection, it would seem that her corporeal presence signifies Buzz's loss of will or transformation. In other words, they got him in the end.

There is probably no money involved, but I would LOVE to see a fully polished 4k transfer of this game. See what the cut scenes look like, BEFORE they got diminished due to the limited technology of Turbo CD.

A lot of people give this version a lot of flack, always comparing it to the disk version, but for a CD-ROM title is does a lot of things right. I admit it's pretty lousy digitization and palettization on display here but the use of video sprites as in smaller FMV blocks is what worked best on early CD platforms. Doesn't eat up multiple CDs and the frame rate average is fairly smooth. I love the cheesy acting, I think the actors nailed that performance style. The radio segments do a great job of world building and making the town feel alive. I do think it would have been better if they had used stop motion puppets for the ants more so, I think that would have fit the aesthetics of this theme more consistently. Same for the action levels, the hand drawn stuff replaced with cave model photos digitized instead. The gameplay suffers from too little interaction being so linear as the RPG elements don't come into play any if at all, but most FMV games had that issue. Largely I wish it had been ported to more platforms like SegaCD since it's kind of an island being only on TG-CD.

It is bizarre how they made this (ICFTD) version on the CDROM of all things for the PC-engine/TurboGrafx considering the CDROM PC-engine (TurboGrafx) wasn't all that popular for games. It just makes Cinemaware look bad, which is a pity since the amiga version was so well done. I think part of the game-company's tolerance for the bad graphics comes from the fact that even though Rocket Ranger (released earlier) on Amiga had good graphics, the PC version had CGA graphics and Rocket Ranger looked kind of bad on that too but they had the confidence to still release it. The animation of the ant crawling out the ground is sort of cool and would be even better on a CDROM amiga with a couple of Megabytes (MB) RAM. This bad PC engine version makes one glad they did not release it for Amiga CD (A570 and CDTV) even though Defender Of the Crown on the CDTV was marginally better graphics than the mere usual (e.g. A500) version. If they had really put the effort in, ICFTD on Amiga CD could have looked very cool, especially if aimed at the A570 with at least 1MEG RAM and then better graphics and animation if you had say 2MB RAM. An A570 could actually have 2MB RAM to go with the A500 1MB thereby giving you 3MB of various types of RAM. That is not even including the various hacks an A500 could have done to it to give it yet more RAM. A 3MB RAM version on CDROM would have been very cool if they exploited all the hardware for it. For example, even on a 512KB amiga, see the Scoopex youtube video _"Grade my Waterbear",_ using copperchunky for a rotozoomer effect.

MrBruno2000 well... I just watched almost 30 min. of the Amiga version. The Amiga version graphics are much more crisp and clear. the gameplay action scenes look much better and the game seems to move along at a smoother pace. there is no FMV or cheesy acting as seen in the TG-CD version. but live voice acting would have been nice for the Amiga version. overall, the Amiga version definitely looks better and it probably is the better game. but I have a nostalgic attachment to the TurboGrafx version.

the amiga version is great, PC isn't too bad either... but everything about this game is terrible, fmv is terrible, the arcade side scroller is crap . Music was nicely orchestrated, I suppose, but other than that, this is utter garbage.
