We were listening to some Chet Valentines evening. You can almost hear the vocal when your playing, sounds lovely. Thanks a million for your instruction and playing.

Alex, you've knocked it out of the park yet again, with another beautiful song choice and solo guitar arrangement. Glad to know that Chet's version was your inspiration, as it has been for me. As I love those really lush-sounding chords, I sure wish I could achieve the wrap-around thumb that's put to use here, but as a chick, with chick-sized hands, I just can't seem to swing it in most instances, no matter how I angle my hand -- been playing for decades, too. ... Your arrangements always reveal that you not only play but also listen well -- much appreciated!

Ah, thank you so much! I really appreciate the comment 🙏🏻 Out of interest, have you tried the thumb-over stuff on a shorter scale guitar Hank Garland style? (Gibson Byrdland, Fender Jaguar or Mustang etc)? Thanks again for the kind words, it really means a lot 🧡

6”2 (189cm) tall chap here with the same problem, been trying to incorporate thumb over for more than 30 years, lately with these lessons from Alex I’m noticing improvement but also muscle pains from trying harder. Which is partly normal I guess. Some of us just aren’t gifted with the perfect hand measurements. Like Alex said, it is easier on a jag for example. That said, I tend to bar my index finger more often, leaving more fingers available for chord melody.

@@AlexFarranGuitar I actually had a Mustang back in the '80s -- I don't recall ever trying thumb-over back then. All I ever played was barre chords, as those were my pre-jazz days. Now I wish I had that guitar back, for its sound.😢 Strangely, I tend to prefer regular Fender scale, as I have a good span with the fingers.

@@DeGroove I guess we all have to make do with what we've got! I can do thumb-over for a flatted fifth on a 9th chord (root on 2nd string), but I think that's it -- can't swing it for anything else.

Dude this channel is a godsend. I’m trying to get into playing solo guitar gigs at bars and such, but building a repertoire has been tough. I love making my own arrangements but I’m a perfectionist and it’s time consuming. I’ve already found a couple of pieces on this channel I’m excited to learn. Cheers buddy.

thank you very inspirational. It is a good way of learning when theory is applied to proper tune. Struggling with thumb a bit - small hands snd classical background, but I get that those low notes have to be heard. Maybe if I break those chords up? Would that work can avoid thumb .... Any ideas ? Fabulous channel btw

I have the smallest hands on earth. I got the thumb over and mute the A too. You can too. Just gotta learn a new way - no scared of learning something new surely. Change that wrist geometry til you get it. I learned the big bar chords in my teens. Just learned the Thumb over several years back in my 40s and it was like relearning everything I knew. Tiny hands got it figured out and it’s very worth learning and I prefer it so much.
