I stumbled across the concept of triads 20 years ago, after 5 or so years of frustration trying to improve at guitar over a 10-year period. Instant revelation. So THIS is how we unlock the fretboard! It's so obvious in hindsight, but never having sat down at a piano (at the time) I needed someone to switch on the lightbulb for me. Very quickly, friends were astounded at the leaps forward I made. Enthusiastically, I tried to share - but they weren't interested in boring 'theory'. These being, at the time, 20-soemthing STEM graduates who are otherwise logical and capable people. These days I'm focusing on improving and refining other areas, primarily technique-related. But these are all add-ons as compared to what I gained by getting comfortable with the theory and practice of triads. Even now, said friends will ask 'What chord is that??' or 'How did you work out that part so quickly, and what is it?', when I could be playing a bog-standard I-IV in G. I tentatively mention triads - again... - but they don't want to know, thinking it unnecessarily technical. Oh well. Thanks for the lesson - it's a good one.

Thanks for the comment mate. Absolutely!… triads are one of the greatest mapping systems out there and having them truly locked down provides such a solid foundation to build from. I make sure each and every one of my students puts a lot of work into triads and the many, many uses of them. 👌🏻

A lot going on here! Just played 20 or so minutes of never before, using your background chords.. Sounded pretty good. Gotta bite the bullet and do the looper. So now your lessons have got me working with Guitar Pro where I get to really listen to and analyze this material (and loop stuff). Anyway, great lesson! Beautifully played, as usual. I should mention the 3 note chord voicings too. I use them more often now when accompanying a vocalist or just comping. they add a lot of speed and flexibility. I've set Moonlight in Vermont aside for the moment, but can almost play it presentably. Gonna polish it up a bit and then look to set up another Zoom leson. Seasons' greetings from New York.

Fantastic lesson and great food for thought. Plenty to be going on with here. Thankyou. I noticed you picked quite hard most of the time.... One thing I struggle with is a pick... I'm fingers - no matter what I'm playing, but I've developed attack in that over the years. I am going to try with this triads using a pick though....given me an incentive here.
@AlexFarranGuitarКүн бұрын
thanks for the kind words! Yes, for this particular style it’s important to use rest stroke picking quite a bit to get that “pop” on the front end of the note.. that kind of compression is a crucial part of the style and can only be done with a pick. I also am a massive fan of fingerstyle, and hybrid picking. For me it’s about tone, and I’ll use whatever medium I need to to get the sound down. 👍🏻

This lesson made me play better instantly. The 3 and 6 steps apart notes is the hardest part I have to work on the most. This is minor so why does the major fifth chord work so well, I thought it has to be a minor chord?
@AlexFarranGuitar2 күн бұрын
I’m so glad to hear that buddy! Often in minor keys, (as is the case here and much of jazz and blues), we’re talking harmonic minor which has the dominant V chord… it creates a stronger pull back to the tonic 👌🏻

Alex, if you can indulge me ... I gotta ask about that Novo. I'm pretty much sold on their guitars, and want to take the leap. But I'm wondering how you chose Miris vs. Serus? Definitely a different look with the binding, but I'm mostly interested in whether the semi-hollow makes a difference in timbre/warmth or anything else you might notice. Any quick thoughts appreciated!
@AlexFarranGuitar2 күн бұрын
It’s a lovely guitar for sure, and the semi hollow is the one that stood out to me as it’s got a bit of everything going on. I wanted a 330 type of guitar, and I wanted a jaguar… this is like both combined 😅 At some point I’d like to try one of their solid bodies with the tele bridge too.

Thanks buddy! I use an old Boomerang iii looper that I’ve had for 15 years now. Nothing comes close to it’s layout in my opinion 👌🏻

Thank you Sir. Great stuff as always 🙂 Any recommendations for a first looper? The Boomerang seems to command a bit of a premium still - probably pushed up even further by your fans now! 😂 (although, looking at reviews, it does seem to be hard to beat for those who have tried it).

I got my first looper this summer after almost 30 years of playing. I got the TC Electronic Ditto + and I've found it to be perfect for a 40 year old looper novice! Highly recommend.

Hey buddy, there are so many great options out there nowadays and I’m kinda out of the loop (no pun intended), on which are the best. I think it’s hard to go wrong. I love the ease of use with the boomerang. It’s got no fancy features and it doesn’t have any internal memory, but I love that about it. TC Ditto and its various incarnations are a safe bet, as is the fancier Boss stuff or the EHX one.

Did my best to clip the practice loop (no looper pedal yet)... YT only allows 1/10th of a second, so not quite right. kzbin.infoUgkx2V8cble8XKi5a-uwHVsH7ZaC9vtXASKk
